- lucidguru, on 04/11/2008, -4/+38Not only should you lie to get into school, but you should lie to get jobs. You should lie to win awards, and in competitions you should definitely cheat. There is no more accountability in the system. People are rewarded for doing things unethically. Until that changes it makes no sense to disadvantage yourself voluntarily.
- JonTheGoose, on 04/11/2008, -2/+28Denying a kid the best possible education they can get is a worse crime, I think.
- ahndru, on 04/11/2008, -4/+21How do I reeeech deees keeeeds?
- KloroFormd, on 04/11/2008, -1/+17My mother lied to get my little brother into a school away from the little hellion that lived next door after my little brother told her while crying that the neighbor beat a dog to death with a bucket of paint. He showed her where the dog was... in the shed rotting.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -2/+18The system screws citizens all the time, why not screw the system in a harmless manner.
- fuhcough, on 04/11/2008, -1/+16Sadly you must live in a bubble...
- aton111, on 04/11/2008, -1/+15Principal: You're momma sure does care about your education, son.
Principal: You don't say much do you?
Forrest Gump: eh, eh, eh, eh, eh... - shadekeiko, on 04/11/2008, -0/+14I just completed the insane college process this year, and let me tell you...I know of some people who went to certain "SAT tutors/private college counselors" who wrote their college application essays for them. It's ***** dog-eat-dog out there. Parents AND students will sometimes stop at nothing to get what they want.
- Rikkochet, on 04/11/2008, -1/+13This rings familiar... Did you happen to graduate in Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, too?
- mannymix03, on 04/11/2008, -1/+9Its actually a really funny issue, there are pretty much 4 main zones around where I live, the rich white area, the ghetto area, the cuban area and the mexican area. They all feed into two high schools, Cooper High and Flanagan, The nicer of the two is Cooper, guess where all the white parents try to get their kids into?
I have seen countless lies, even people willing to pay people to be able to use their mailing address so their kid doesn't have to go to the "ghetto" school. - dopesick, on 04/11/2008, -1/+7It's actually FRAUD. I've heard countless stories from my wife (works as a school nurse/admin asst) of people be given fines, students expelled from the district. And a few cases of parents being arrested for "defrauding" the school district.
- ayeroxor, on 04/11/2008, -1/+7Dumber words were never spoken...
- sepllcehck, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6There's a lot of windbagging here and I'm not really sure why. I'm from the US - so admittedly - I don' t know about the British school system.
I will say that my parents lied about our address so that I could attend a better school. I had to knowingly lie on applications - and give the fake address whenever asked. Considering the disparity between the school I should have gone to vs the one I did - I am glad my parents worked out a way for me to use a different address and applaud any parent willing to do the extra diving time and put for the extra effort in getting that child the best possible education.
The fact that such enforcements need to occur is a symptom of a problem with the education system. - sleepyjjk, on 04/11/2008, -2/+7I think there's too much hype into getting into a good school and it honestly doesn't matter that much. What matters is if the kid is happy with his or her life no matter what he does.
- sockpuppets, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6I don't think he's being sarcastic- the system is rigged against you, welcome to 2008. Until it's repaired it's time to fight back.
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Maybe they should be taught that a collage is a bunch of images and a college is a place of learning?
- Angostura, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Because you're not screwing "the system" you're screwing another family who will now have to take their kids to a more distant school.
- jflowers45, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4interesting ... seems like a lot of resources would have to be spent to do this kind of background checking
- d3dm, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3And here I was thinking that parents never teach their kids anything these days...
- retawd, on 04/11/2008, -0/+3I was in a Catholic school with a kid named Liebowitz. I think his parents might have fibbed a 'lil. ;-P
- 5urr3al5am, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2I think being a bad example is probably worse than a good education. I know several people who by social standards probably don't have the best education, but are great people with a stellar level of self worth and responsibility. And I know the opposite, people with great educations, that seem to have no morals. Whom would you rather associate with? The minute you start to give kids reason to cheat, that all starts to chip away and crumble. Funny thing is that kids/people eventually will gravitate towards ethical and moral individuals, and most likely away from the people who bend the rules to meet their own needs.
- sepllcehck, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3Quit talking out of your ass. It's done geographically - thus - people that live within a certain area go to a certain school.. No one was prevented from going to the school as a result of my attendence. The only thing adversely effected as a result of my presence was a slightly higher student to teacher ratio though my test scores more than made up for it.
- evilcaptain, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Made you feel like a teacher, did it?
Well done! I can sleep easier now.
BTW you missed a comma ;) - MWeather, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3If my what is not a politician?
- shaka999, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3In the cases they are talking about it isn't about going to a good or great school. Its about getting your kid into a school where the won't be shot or hounded by drug dealers.
- hakz, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3My lecturer went to church and pretended to be a Christian to get approval from a priest so that his son could get into a top high school that happened to require the students to be christian (this was a long time ago)
- 5urr3al5am, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2buuutt.. "THE SYSTEM IS KEEPING ME DOWN!".. its the damn system!!
- fuhcough, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3Eh, most people do the same thing on their resumes. No problem with embellishment as long as you don't blantly start fabricating stuff like little Johnny is a Rhodes Scholar.
- hauntedchippy, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Hey can you hear me all the way back there in the 50's?
- andy17null, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3"perjury."
- mastication, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2If Ari Gold does it, everyone should.
- CrackyJSquirrel, on 04/11/2008, -2/+4I assure you purgery is a serious crime..
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Funding should follow the kids so there are no issues. If the parent wants their kid to go to a school one city over, let them. And once a kid is 16 they should be old enough to make their own decisions and decide where they should go to school on their own.
The current set up teaches kids it's acceptable to lie, especially when it works in your favor. - cdubd, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Anyone who actually grew up in a terrible neighborhood, who feared for the lives of their children attending the school they are supposed to go to, would do whatever possible to get them into a better school. A lot of times there is supposed to be a "lottery" for students applying for a transfer, but it is hardly a fair process. A few kids were murdered at a school near my house, and needless to say, I would never want my brothers or sisters going there, or any kids I had going there.
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2You do realize this is in no way a sensical rationalization for cheating, right?
- inactive, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3And also screwing a kid that deserves that spot in school more than yours.
Easy to target "the system" and make it guilty of everybody's sins. The more nebulous the target of your blame, the easier to escape (or pretend to escape) your own responsibility. - lucidguru, on 04/11/2008, -1/+3Yeah unfortunately I'm serious. Sockpuppets is right, the system is rigged against you and the only way to succeed nowadays is to play the game the same way as everyone else.
- leerayIG88, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2high five!
- mnemy, on 04/11/2008, -2/+3How can I rrrreach these kids?
- 5urr3al5am, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I'd be interested in hearing how the system has singled someone out and cheated someone of something the rightfully deserved?
- leoedin, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2school...as in, a public primary school. This isn't college, but school for 5-18 year olds.
- gadgetlust, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1What can I do to reach these KEEDS?!!?!??!
- bronxelf, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1That reasoning relies upon parents to be honest about their children's deficiencies as well as their strengths. It requires parents not see their children through rose colored glasses, and be able to realistically assess their abilities and weaknesses. Most parents aren't able to do that well, and a great many are under the delusion that their children are significantly smarter, more clever, and more talented than they really are.
- hokie47, on 04/11/2008, -2/+3I would lie to get to into the school where Debra Lafave is at
- AnarkeIncarnate, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Actually depending on the "School of Thought," the comma is optional. I am sorry that your elementary school misinformed you.
- AQUANETA, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Yes!
- mdehart, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2Wish I had more chances to dig you up. Well said!
- evilcaptain, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Assessing someone's knowledge and teaching people knowledge are very different.
I just see students revising off of past papers, calculating which questions are likely to come up and memorizing them.
That teaches the opposite of critical thinking, at least about the subject they are supposed to be learning ;( - macinit1138, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Lie like you work on the Hill. Leadership from the top has taught us to be selfish, greedy, and not adhere to the silly rules of ethics when they get in the way of making more money. This is the Amerikan way.
- hauntedchippy, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1I get what your saying, but it's a bit too cynical for me. Maybe in a few years after some more system dispensed ass raping...
