- Gregatron5000, on 10/20/2009, -9/+117Anyone that compares George Bush, Barack Obama, or Gordon Brown to real fascists is historically illiterate. Just because you disagree with a person does not make him a fascist.
- IrmaPel, on 10/20/2009, -20/+116From watching Fox News, I always though a fascist was anyone that held an opposing point of view to your own. Socialist, Communist, Nazi all have the same definitions.
- richmomz, on 10/20/2009, -11/+104In the words of Benito Mussolini, father of Fascism: "Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power."
In other words, when the government serves the interests of a select elite of corporatists and bankers instead of the people, that's Fascism. To accomplish this, said elite interests must utilize media control and mass propaganda to convince the masses to accept the expansion of government power and erosion of civil liberties, usually through a combination of fearmongering and pseudo-science. - jrm125, on 10/20/2009, -4/+57You're right, it's not.
;-) - GorfTron, on 10/20/2009, -0/+52I finished my basement in Obama Death Panels.
- Hetman, on 10/20/2009, -2/+52The problem is that when you throw around words like fasicism they tend to lose there meaning. I dislike regean and bush however they are by no means fascists.
- Hetman, on 10/20/2009, -3/+49It is someone who has over 15% body fat right?
- jrm125, on 10/20/2009, -3/+43It's not communist either.
You really need to look up these definitions. - whatthefu, on 10/20/2009, -2/+41"It would seem that, as used, the word ‘Fascism’ is almost entirely meaningless. In conversation, of course, it is used even more wildly than in print. I have heard it applied to farmers, shopkeepers, Social Credit, corporal punishment, fox hunting, bullfighting, the 1922 Committee, the 1941 Committee, Kipling, Gandhi, Chiang Kai-Shek, homosexuality, Priestley's broadcasts, Youth Hostels, astrology, women, dogs and I do not know what else." - George Orwell
- Fivefeetunder, on 10/20/2009, -6/+43Fox News personnel, "teabaggers" and most Republican hacks have no idea what the term "fascist' means and they probably do not care. It is just another missile they hurl along with the lies they make up to support whatever fear and hate they happen to be mongering that day.
The Italian term Fascismo is derived from "fascio," which were bundles of sticks symbolizing the collective strength of the Roman people. Formal fascist ideology was developed under the leadership of Benito Mussolini, the dictator of Italy before and during World War II. Adolph Hitler imported many of Mussolini's ideas into Nazi ideology.
Reduced to its bare essentials, Facism consists of total subservience of the individual and all other components of society to the central state. In a fascist state, democracy is eschewed in favor of a strong leader, or dictator. Facism is sometimes described as the ideology of the "corporate state" because of the partnership of government and the wealthy.
It is impossible to be both a Fascist and a Communist at the same time. Fascism and communism are both authoritarian, but ideological opposites, having no more in common with each other than both have with oligarcy and monarchy. - inactive, on 10/20/2009, -6/+42Someone who is involved in Fascism.
- Hetman, on 10/20/2009, -1/+31Exactly and as George Orwell points out this is just another form of double speak. You take the power away from a word when you use it to describe something it is not. Calling everyone a fascists just makes the term useless.
- diguptruth77, on 10/20/2009, -1/+30This sounds somewhat familiar...
- shnuffy, on 10/20/2009, -8/+36There is no definition. It's entirely ambiguous and is used only by people who are either studying it academically or are complete ***** idiots.
- rchargel, on 10/20/2009, -0/+27Hitler and Mussolini were both elected into office.
Is this thread exempt from Godwin's Law? - Batfishy, on 10/20/2009, -1/+28jet - got any more "ists" you wanna throw around?
- sqrt2, on 10/20/2009, -2/+26Unfortunately it has become another mindless pejorative, interchangeable with communist, socialist, Nazi, or terrorist. One of the worst things about the sorry state of political debate in this country is how it dilutes the meaning of words in the English language. None of those terms effectively have any meaning anymore outside of academia. The average person doesn't understand what they mean and can't grasp what each stands for and how they are largely mutually exclusive ideologies. All they know is that it's a scary form of government other than what we have now, and they're against it. Anyone who isn't like them has to be a fascist, a socialist, a communist, etc.
- jrm125, on 10/20/2009, -2/+26jet's the perfect case study for what this b.s. misuse of language does for the meaning of words.
- eh123, on 10/20/2009, -5/+29What a totally unexpected thing for you to say!
Moron. - jrm125, on 10/20/2009, -29/+52Anyone that doesn't agree with the Republican party's (read: Fox News) idea of an American.
- ruckfules, on 10/20/2009, -5/+28I'm not sure who BHO is, but no recent President has nationalized any major industry or attempted to take over the entire healthcare industry.
- dalittle, on 10/20/2009, -5/+28when Fox tabloid programing outright lies it is not a news organization.
- KyotoWolf, on 10/20/2009, -1/+23Gordon Brown is an elected leader for the simple reason that in the UK we don't vote for the Prime Minister but the candidate in your specific constituency. For a party to replace a PM all it needs is a majority in Commons - it is in no way a requirement for a general election to be held in order to 'elect' a new Prime Minister.
We had 'unelected' leaders in 1916, 1940, 1957, 1963, 1976 and 1990. Stop using the 'unelected' excuse to bash Gordon Brown because it doesn't hold up against any kind of scrutiny, there's a lot of things to attack him for but this just diminishes the argument. - costumemaker, on 10/20/2009, -5/+26Incorrect.
Corporatism as defined by 'Il Douche' himself is not what you described. Also I love how you call richmomz an idiot when you get everything wrong. Irony is always delicious.
Richmomz is correct in definition. - reticulate, on 10/20/2009, -0/+21I'm just going to leave this here:

- ghengiskhan1, on 10/20/2009, -0/+18I got your definition right here pal.
1. Fascism
a. A system of government marked by centralization of authority under a dictator, stringent socioeconomic controls, suppression of the opposition through terror and censorship, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism.
b. A political philosophy or movement based on or advocating such a system of government.
2. Oppressive, dictatorial control - Sunsneezer, on 10/20/2009, -0/+17Aren't moderates at the center of the circle, and libertarians on top, as the opposite of authoritarism?
- Bookant, on 10/20/2009, -2/+19George W. refused my request for an interview. FASCIST! Oh, wait, you mean a President isn't required to automatically grant interviews to everyone that asks for one?
- T8erT0T, on 10/20/2009, -0/+16"Sometimes there's a man, and I won't say hero, cause what's a hero? But sometimes, there's a man. And I'm talking about The Dude here."
- gerrylazlo, on 10/20/2009, -2/+17Shut up, you Commusocialazi.
- Maddoktor2, on 10/20/2009, -11/+26Actually, govsucks, collectivism is "the political principle of centralized social and economic control, esp. of all means of production".
"col·lec·tiv·ism (kə-lěk'tə-vĭz'əm)
n. The principles or system of ownership and control of the means of production and distribution by the people collectively, usually under the supervision of a government.
col·lec'tiv·ist n., col·lec'tiv·is'tic adj., col·lec'tiv·is'ti·cal·ly adv."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collectivist_anarchis ...
The concept of collectivism is based on production and distribution of that which is produced, with individual salary being determined by how much time is devoted to production, ie, the more you produce, the more you make. A couple of examples of this are sales commissions and employee profit sharing.
Collectivism is more of an economic descriptive term than an ideological one, but can also be used to describe some social ideologies that fall within its defined economic tenets:
"Collectivism is a term used to describe any moral, political, or social outlook, that emphasizes the interdependence of every human in some collective group and the priority of group goals over individual goals. Collectivists focus on community and society, and seek to give priority to group goals over individual goals."

- inactive, on 10/20/2009, -0/+13What was the primarily reason Hitler was so popular?
- He put Germans back to work.
- 1920's Weimar inflation, massive unemployment.
- Hitler abandons (the british) gold standard and issues MEFO (fiat-money) then sets people to work.
- Britain got pissed because he went off the gold-debt system (probably more the British bankers)

- Hetman, on 10/20/2009, -1/+12Thats weird because I thought the whole idea of America was based on multiculturalism.
- Sunsneezer, on 10/20/2009, -1/+12Basically you're right, this is your personal model, since you made your own viewpoint the "moderate" stance.
- stonebear, on 10/20/2009, -0/+11George Orwell came at it with Occam's razor in his WWII newspaper column: Fascism is simply a euphemism for bullying. The very simple definition of it has been obscured and complicated by people who want to condemn other people's bullying without taking responsibility for their own.
