- NikiPa, on 07/15/2008, -2/+140It's great that the richest man in the world controls money rather than allowing money to control him. That's the true test of a greatness.
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -6/+118I love this line: Making money isn’t the backbone of our guiding purpose; making money is the by-product of our guiding purpose.
- kenjonesmd, on 07/15/2008, -1/+95“Not losing hard earned money is far more important than making more money”.

- planes, on 07/16/2008, -0/+78A couple of years ago, I read an interview with Warren's daughter. She said that she and her dad went to a meeting somewhere, she drove, and they parked in a parking ramp. When they went to leave, she discovered she didn't have any money on her, so dad pulled out a $20 and gave it to her.
When she dropped him off at his house, he asked her to write her a check for $20 bucks, and waited while she did just that. - AmusedToDeath, on 07/16/2008, -14/+78Despite the fact that Buffett probably is a decent guy who lives humbly despite being super rich, it's still easy to be happy and satisfied when you're ridiculously wealthy. Do you think Warren Buffett ever loses sleep wondering if he'll be able to pay his mortgage this month? I doubt it.
I'd much rather hear from someone who *isn't* super rich and doesn't have the security blanket of wealth, yet is happy anyway.
- Weddingzilla, on 07/16/2008, -3/+61Its amazing to find out how his mind works. He uses common sense. Great post! Maybe he should be balancing our national budget. ;)

- DocKC, on 07/15/2008, -5/+40See? You can have it all. Money, power, fame AND happiness! :)
- MrFurious2k, on 07/16/2008, -18/+52I love it when disgustingly rich people say things like this. When you're struggling to pay for gas, it's hard to stop and say, "Gee, I just want to stop and smell the roses and live the simple life."

- sublimeslime, on 07/16/2008, -0/+26Warren Buffet is amazing. He lives walking distance from work, drives an 'economical' car and runs one of the most successful companies in the world while being looked to as a kind of market guru. There is a lot of truth to the old addage that money doesn't buy happiness and Buffet shows us why. His rules make sense and put life into perspective. He's happy when he works because he enjoys his work, not necessarily making the money but the work itself. Last time I felt like that I was 3 and my 'work' consisted of trying to get my damn toes into my mouth!
- inactive, on 07/15/2008, -1/+25Honestly speaking I may not live a simple life if I am that rich. He's filthy rich !!
- squaredUP, on 07/16/2008, -1/+22I used to see things like these and always say to myself, " OK, I'm going to start living by these values." However, I would always just being the same old me by the end of the day. Not until recently have I started forcing a change in the way I think through every aspect of my day until I have finally been able to acheive a degree of change in who I am and the way I think. It's truly amazing how you and only you can change and make who you want to be.
All of us hear these things quite often, but only a few actually adopt them into their being. Those people that do are the people who become what they want in this world. I cannot explain it, but I know there is so much to be said about how your thoughts control who you become.
"The good news is that the moment you decide that what you know is more important than what you have been taught to believe, you will have shifted gears in your quest for abundance. Sucess comes from within, not from without." - Ralph Waldo Emerson - CedEx, on 07/16/2008, -1/+21That story is actually about a granddaughter.... and she isn't one by blood, but rather married into the family. Her mother married Warren's son, and Warren didn't quite approve of the marriage to begin with.
So I'm not sure if that's treating someone really badly by my standards. - bundwallah, on 07/16/2008, -3/+23I didn't say the advice wasn't any good. It's just that people are so gullible to believe anything some talking head puts out there. People worship this guy for his money and his ability to make it, he comes around with these seven little ditties that basically say "hey! it's not about the money" its' about life. Money doesn't buy happiness blah blah blah....etc etc etc.
This is like a fat guy telling starving kids, that not eating a lot is actually better for you. - buggu, on 07/16/2008, -3/+22You hit the nail on the head. When you're as filthy rich as Buffet, you are inclined to a lifestyle that is simple and minimalistic. It's just a way to cope with the immense responsibility of dealing with a bank account as large as a man who consistently makes the list as one of the top richest men in the world.
That said, people with normal lives don't have the time or luxury to enjoy the simpler pleasures of playing bridge 12 hours a day, or even the wealth to outdo their neighbours trophy boat/house/car. The average person leads a hectic life by obligation, not choice. When one has the wealth Buffet does, they can afford to live this simple. It's unfortunate but even leading such a life is only within the realms of the super-rich. - kris2pe, on 07/16/2008, -0/+19#10 Continue to peddle Coca-Cola and Gillette in every public speaking event to raise it stock value!
And yes he does this in every speech he makes! - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -4/+22She sounds like an ungrateful *****.
Rich kids have a habit of playing the rebel...till the funds are cut off. - skyshock1, on 07/16/2008, -0/+13He meant Lyf. It's a common typo.
- BrokenVisage, on 07/16/2008, -1/+14Choosy moms choose Lif.
- Nonplussed, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12You people are so jaded and cynical. His advice is directed squarely at you -- folks obsessed with money. Why do you hate him so much simply for being successful? He's worth $62 billion and he's giving it ALL to charity, most of it to feed starving children in Africa and to develop cures and vaccines for deadly diseases!
He complains that he pays only 9% of his income in total federal taxes, while his employees pay 33% despite making far less money -- not exactly greedy billionaire-speak.
He favors the inheritance tax.
He's passionate about universal health care.
What exactly is wrong with this man? Why the hatred and discrimination? I think he's an incredible man with sound, prescient advise on both the financial world and the personal one. I'm proud to say he's from Nebraska because he personifies it. - kmolleja, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12I'm happy and no one would consider me to be rich.
I've got 100k plus debt from student loans, but that is an investment in my future. My wife and I don't buy anything on credit and if we don't have money for the extras we go without. We enjoy being with each other and with our son. Life isn't a competition. Find what you love and do it. Educate yourself and grow in new ways. I echo the call to simplify your life, you can do it without money. - TypeEE, on 07/16/2008, -0/+12As soon as your expense is less than your income, you would be able to control your left overs. If all you earn can only afford your monthly expense, you are bounded to be controlled by money.

- Nonplussed, on 07/16/2008, -0/+11"With an estimated net worth of around US$62 billion, he was ranked by Forbes as the richest person in the world as of February 11, 2008."
- inactive, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13Life is always simplest when you have a net total of 10s of billions of dollars diversified in investments and varying bank accounts.
Ah, I can already picture such a simpler life :-) - charlietuna, on 07/16/2008, -2/+13I would not be living a simple life if I had his money. Not saying I'm right mind you, but I'd be welcoming all the gold diggers that would inevitably be knocking. I'd be a serious man slut.
- TypeEE, on 07/16/2008, -2/+12Get rich, and whatever you said is always right.
- mrswirl, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10God, isn't that the truth. I distinctly remember seeing oil hovering around $10/barrel back in 1997 and thinking to myself: "gee, I wish I had some money that I could invest in oil futures right now."
That ranks right up there with my 1998 insight: "This 'Ebay' thing is pretty cool. Maybe I should buy some stock at $18 a share."
Lesson: just like George Costanza, do the opposite of what I do and you'll be rich. - xavier2, on 07/16/2008, -4/+14life is easy to make simple when you have all the money in the world.
Try living check to check and see how simple life can be. - stonebear, on 07/16/2008, -0/+10Like how that he doesn't use a cellphone. Of course he doesn't! Why should he? His entourage is bristling with them. The same "simplicity" is why presidents don't carry cash.
- Buzzbean, on 07/16/2008, -1/+10He plays bridge 12 hours a WEEK, not 12 hours a day. Most people spend more time than that watching mindless drivel on television. I can't prove it but I believe that playing a card game helps your mind work better while most television is passive entertainment that, at best, doesn't help your mind work better.

People like you probably think Bill Gates is evil as well. - brstilson, on 07/16/2008, -11/+19Is this going to be really basic ***** that everyone already knows but is easier said than done?

- bosssmiley, on 07/16/2008, -1/+9It's a shame the article wasn't long enough to include Warren's 8th tip for happiness:
#8: daily swim in personal moneybin. :-) - mal1964, on 07/16/2008, -1/+9Most diggers do the exactly opposite, And that's OK.
- MtheoryX, on 07/16/2008, -0/+8I beg to differ...
People who don't dream or daydream won't ever by that wealthy. - inactive, on 07/16/2008, -2/+9I love watching Warren answering questions for students while drinking and pimping a can of coke. Reminded me of this http://youtube.com/watch?v=v7thSdlRhuM
- smpx, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8I think after a certain point, when money becomes a complete after thought, a simple life becomes the new purpose.
- Dozernotz, on 07/16/2008, -1/+8Well, given the rather strong correlation between money, power, and fame, I guess all it would take is to be happy about it.
- NikkiA, on 07/16/2008, -6/+13#0 : be insanely ***** rich
- Nonplussed, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7Well considering he's giving it all to charity, you could argue both.
