- HungSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Tie a Windsor for job interviews and weddings. It is best worn with wide collar shirts. The knot protrudes forward slightly, and requires more tie 'real estate' to tie, i.e. your tie will end up looking very short if you tie it wrong. When a tie is properly tied, the bottom should come to about the level of the top of your slacks.
The four-in-hand is best used with narrow collar shirts. This is the knot most people learn because it is relatively easy to tie. It's asymmetrical and, in my opinion, makes the wearer look like a moron. (Bush's favorite knot, by the way.)
The best of both worlds can be had in the Half Windsor. This is by far my favorite knot, and it's EASIER to tie than the four-in-hand! It is fairly wide like a Windsor, but doesn't protrude and doesn't require as much tie 'real estate' to tie because the knot is much simpler. It can be worn to weddings or job interviews and still appear professional and formal. I recommend this knot to anyone who wants to look great but has trouble making a good Windsor. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The PA shouldn't be popping in your head; if that's the case you should go back to the piercer and have it readjusted.
- s14sh3r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No monkey's fist? I feel cheated... :(
- LQBMaV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and the most difficult knot to tie (bow tie) doesn't have a video!
- d03boy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want to know which knot I'm supposed to use in a given situation. Why aren't there any explanations of that?
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just looked at the half-Windsor and the cross knot, step by step, and they appear to be identical knots, merely mirror imaged. If anyone can check this for me to make sure I'm not mistaken, it would be appreciated.
The knot that I always use is undocumented. I thought what I was tying was the Windsor, but it turns out that what I was tying is nowhere to be found. My tie knot results in a tight little triangle.
Here's how I tie my tie knots:
1) Broad half starts on the right, crosses over the front to the left.
2) goes behind, to the right
3) goes over the top, to the left
4) goes around the front, to the right
5) goes over the top from the back
6) goes down behind the band in front.
(For the past seven or eight years, I thought this was the Windsor knot.)
This results in a tight symetrical triangular tie knot.
I also noticed that the Pratt knot was not listed on this site. You can see this knot here:

- grady, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always thought the cross and small knot were the same thing. Not so.
After all these years, I can tie a cross knot without a mirror, and also while driving.
D03, you select the knot you need by the weight of the tie itself, and the spread of your collar. Bulky tie uses a 'narrow' knot, thin tie uses a 'wide' knot (like the 4iH or half).
Button down collars need a narrow, and as the Squirrel says, a spread collar needs more knot to fill up the collar opening. Only eccentrics can pull off a bow-tie.
Clip ons are for those with manginas, or neuticles.
Bollos are a whole other story. Probably not many on Digg are suitable for a Bollo. - Mac2492, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those button ties are easier. =)
- daniking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since when did digg become a place where people that are too lazy to do a simple search can congregate and discuss "How to tie a tie"?
Is a Google query of "how to tie a tie" that returns 168,000 results not enough for you people?
There, I said it. - HP844182, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Zipper ties ftw.
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm. Yet another twist. According to this video, the undocumented knot I described is a traditional half windsor.
The half windsor method described is modified to compensated against lopsidedness.

http://www.bensilver.com/style04/knots_cross.htm - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DAMMIT! I have seen 4 different dupes today with same titles or same descriptions!
STOP IT! AHHHH - thadman08, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had the same question about the cross knot and the half windsor. As it's __shown__ the cross knot is backwards (has the fat end of the tie on the left), but it's __described__ as starting with the fat end on the right.
So, from what I can tell, they're essentially the same knot (on a real, knot level, since all of them are ways to tie a tie). - msapirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1my favorite is the Windsor. its a fat knot for wide collar shirts and it looks so pimped.
- HungSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wore a bolo with my Scout uniform because I *hated* neckerchiefs. :)
- HungSquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They are different ways of achieving what is essentially the same look.
- Steviebe21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm a big fan of the Prince Albert.
oops...wrong article! - Quiwi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0How about a Pratt/Shelby?
- ChildeRoland420, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The 4-in-hand and small knot look the same too. What is the difference between these knots?
- Berkana, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1It's because the site has video demos and lists all the prevalent methods together. That alone is worth something.
- indulgence, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2imo http://www.duggmirror.com
- doom.md, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1never liked dudes who use bow ties. they always seemed to me to be pretentious asses (Tucker Carlson I'm looking at you). and before any bitches at me because i cant tie one, yes i know how to tie a bow tie. i just refuse to use them.
Now the Windsor, not the crappy Half-Windsor, that's a knot. it looks good and it's complex enough to impress the ladies. - timlee, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Prince Albert? Am I the only one that has something else (NSFW! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Albert_piercing NSFW!) pop in my head when I hear that?

What is Digg?
