- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Wow, look at that. It's like simple math visualized, I've always had a tough time conceiving of what 1/4 of something is but now I get it.
- boonesfarm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12This is good because every time I fire up a joint I'm super-concerned about my footprint on the planet. Then I stare at the wheel on the meter for 45 minutes.
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Actually you can grow weed under standard lights, except it takes a long time. NRFX. For some high tech growers change the light spectrum to change growth patterns, make the plant flower, or go into rooting mode. In fact you can germinate the plants with standard lights since they require more heat than light.
You can also vary from the blue spectrum to red to totally mess with your plant and maybe make a happier healthier plant.
And High Pressure sodium lights are awesome, but the power usage it outrages.
So don't give stupid answers to stupid questions unless you yourself aren't stupid. - Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Pardon the comment abuse,
I had to turn off adblock in order to view the video, in case anyone else has the same problem. - unluckier, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It's not a voltage meter. It's measuring watts.
- JCSaint, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I like the idea of phasing out incandescent light bulbs. Similar to requiring improved gas mileage.
- DiscoLoke, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10can you grow weed with the mini Fluorescents? Anyone know the color spectrum they put out?
- kennyvader, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Cool, now show me the CFL being dimmed to suit my mood, or coming immediately to full brightness in a freezing cold kitchen.
Ooops. - troyounces, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4You can buy compact fluorescent bulbs that emit light at various color temperatures. I've seen bulbs range from 2600K (similar to incandescent) up to 6500K (bluish-white). I like the 3500K bulbs personally. They are whiter than a regular incandescent, but still emit a nice soft light.
- ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4most of the electricity generated for those lights come from coal, which puts orders of magnitude more murcury in the air. the wasted energy from the incandecent equates to WAYMORE murcury in the atmosphere and enviroment than that of a florecent.
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Of course you can, but to get the lumins (?) req'd for the plants' photosynthesis you'd need more than the 16w (or whatever is in the video), you'd need something like those +100 watt fancy fluorescent grow lights that can be found with a google search. Besides, weed's for hippies.
- dukeinlondon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's about time the message gets through in the US. I was selling them as a student job to shops and restaurants in Europe and that was 15 years ago. That was one of the best sales pitch you could ever get. And at the time, they were many times more expensive than incandescent.
The added bonus is that they use to produce a nasty blueish light. Now they are producing a light temperature that is closer to what everyones is accustomed to and they come in all shapes and form. - S1ngular1ty1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Florescent lights (even the mini ones) contain mercury to make them work. I guess saving energy is more important that dumping hazardous materials into a land fill ?
I use florescent lights myself but they are not the answer to save the environment completely. They are a step towards the right goal however. - zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"most of the electricity generated for those lights come from coal, which puts orders of magnitude more murcury in the air. the wasted energy from the incandecent equates to WAYMORE murcury in the atmosphere and enviroment than that of a florecent."
If that's true, that's a good point, but I believe the primary concern is not the actual volume of mercury waste, but how that waste is going to be disposed of safely. - lolwtfhaha, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31) you can get dimmer CFLs, but they are expensive
2) You can get the mini-CFLs which fit anywhere a regular bulb fits. Not quite as bright though - KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Well, I guess they figure, Australia has enough uninhabitable useless desert that it does not matter.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2White LED lights are still more expensive than compact florescent. Also, they seem to create a focused beam of light instead of lighting the whole room.
However, they use a lot less electricity. It's mostly the cost because LED are either red green or blue. What they do is use a blue LED and add phosphors to it to change the color. This is also why white LED cost more than colored LED. - Wonderkind, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's good to have a visual. There are lots of people who just don't get it until you make it really really simple.
I'd bet some people would respond even better to seeing a small pile of money. "This is your savings." - avatarpalin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What the hell? Whats this banning law? I life in Australia and there has been no such announcement!!
Or perhaps I watch to many torrent TV shows.. - balibones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey moron, I put the link to another Digg article about the ban. The link I submitted to Digg above takes you to a video. It's not the same link.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I wish they showed High Pressure Sodium lamps too, for reference ;)
- mraustin1337, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6While you and I can understand 1/4th quite well not everyone can.
Sometimes it takes a visual representation and if this makes more people use CF bulbs then what is wrong with that. I personally have no more conventional bulbs in my house. Saves quite a bit of money. More importantly though it is much more greener. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4CF lights do have limitations. For example, they can't be used with a dimmer switch, are slightly taller than normal light bulbs and (i've noticed) they tend to fade or have sections burn out over time. For most uses they work just fine, but people should still be given a choice if they really need it. That's why I am opposed to wholesale outlawing of incandescent bulbs like they are doing in Australia. It is far better to provide market incentives, to encourage people to switch without forcing them to do anything. Simply tax incandescent bulb so they cost more than CF bulbs. People can still choose the incandescent if they really need it, such as for a science experiment or use with a dimmer switch, but as a whole the transition to energy efficient light bulbs happens much more quickly in the general population. Bans make people angry and defiant. Directed taxes make the change more transparent and easy to accept.
- diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You know full well that they don't leave their parent's basements
- XedLos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I liked the video player
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Dont get me wrong, I LOVE this... BUT... I'm missing something, can somebody help!!
Near the end he says, "save a couple hundred bucks a year, and it will pay for itself in less than 2 years"... WTF?? - spriggig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There is a 100% clean and virtually inexhaustible supply of energy six miles beneath our feet. The US could redeem its recently tarnished image by initiating a push to finish developing and refining the technology to tap that energy supply.
Geothermal energy is currently the only reasonably obtainable energy source that is both abundant enough to completely satisfy all of our needs and 100% clean. And as a bonus the power plants could double as a sauna!
Not pebble bed nuclear reactors, not solar, not wind, not fission. Geothermal. - ApeInago, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1more murcuery is produced from the coal power plant generating that electricity.... the diffrence in power levels between incandecent and florecent means that althoug hit takes a small amount of mecury to make a florecent, it produces significantly less murcury in the long run.
leds are indeed cool though, but if they are running off of murcery generating coal power-plants, they too contribute to the enviromental impact. although if leds are truely less energy wasted, then it would still be better in the long run.
You also have to consider the amount of energy it takes to fabricate and ship the materials/products, and their life expectancy... to truely get a good perspective of the benifits. - masterofsw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I bought a Kill-a-watt meter and used it to message my, CFLs. My 60 watt versions are labeled as only using 13, not 15. Also when messured, they actually only use from 10 to 12 watts.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Thanks for that battlecry. I had disabled NoScript totally and was wondering what the hell is up. I've messed with javascript problems enough but I've never had a video adblocked.
- KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I was really surprised when this was announced. It is a step in the right direction. But its not a big enough step. While this will help the environment, there is so much more Australia could be doing, as the results of global warming will be incredibly costly for Australia, considering our reliance on livestock and farming for our economy.
- wifigod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That annoyed me as well. If it were a voltage meter, it wouldn't change, or at least not as drastically. (IE Voltage fluctuation).
- NoseDive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2you would need about 8 of those per square foot its a lot more space efficient to get a 400 watt HPS setup that would do about 16 square feet. I ran a 400 watt system for about four months and it only raised my light bill by a few dollars a month
- tristan55555, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Actually new technology has been developed to allow fluorescents to work with a dimmer switch. It is computer controlled and actually blinks the flourecent thousands of times per second. The dimming is almost undetectable but it uses even less energy to run.

http://blog.ashtech.info/2007/10/16/ - kualla, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Actually I have heard that using LED lights is a very efficient way of growing plants... specifically a certain color of LED lights (2 different colors) gives really great results and produces much less heat as well and saves a lot on electricity. Not that I am encouraging illegal activity at all even though I think that the weed laws are absolutely ridiculous...
- reboare, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wear sunglasses
- geed, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1They do indeed have limitations. Despite new technology that claims the bulbs can be dimmed, I have yet to see them in stores. This inability to dim certainly restricts their use in areas such as bedrooms, dining rooms and living rooms where mood lighting is desirable. Also, I have several ceiling fans in the house and florescent bulbs do not fit in the enclosed shield. I would recommend their use, however, in areas where light is needed for extended periods such as hallways, stairwells and outdoor areas but the advancement of the bulb has not come far enough to dictate a total ban in incandescent bulbs.
- matthistory, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What about the flourescents vs the led lights?
- jrandyw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I've also noticed that the CF bulbs tend to partially burn out. The concept of reduced energy costs is very appealing to me. What was even more appealing to me was the idea of not having to change my light bulbs as often. But the partial burnout problem is really taking away the appeal of CF bulbs to me.
lolwtfhaha - I've found that many of my lamps won't accept any CF bulbs that I've been able to find. - poppsicle, on 03/11/2008, -1/+0I am def. changing my lightbulbs this weekend. WOW. And I saw this preview (as well as another) this past weekend at the movies - it's short but ends with a nod to 'someone' you wouldn't think..!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3J5GLb6YwQ - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2lol u actually put the link in your description. way. to go. ; |
- nrfx, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6No. You cannot grow weed under standard incandescents either. Go to the library, and don't ask stupid questions.
- reboare, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4So the fact that we consume the equivalent of one thermometers worth of mercury for every serving of fish, makes one wonder...where is it coming from? Ah yes, mercury switches, now banned, mercury lined fluroescent bulbs, still advertised as a good thing, getting crushed in landfills, leaking into the ground water and out to sea.
The future of low wattage lighting is LED bulbs. No digg for posting ancient tech.
LED Bulbs last 100,000 hours and consume 1.4 WATTS

- KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2Would it not be possible to simply put a colour filter in the bulb to make it seem like incandescent bulbs?
