- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -3/+98I went and gave this a try just now- it didn't work.
You probably have to have a "legacy" model of vending machine for this to work. - Broncho24, on 10/12/2007, -4/+93I actually work for a vending machine company as a service tech so I thought I would give a little insight to why this only works on some machines. As for this machine in the video we do not carry them but our competitor does. From the looks of it the machine is the same age as our AP 6600(through that out there for reference) these machines are old and do not have sensors. However you can buy retro-fit kits from companies like InOne Technologies that adds that funcutionality. What happened here was the sensor was put way to low when retro-fitted. I know this because our LCM2's(Another name if you wanna look it up) can see the shoot and if have a reflective beam eyelevel with the lever controling the security drop. This is the same BS as the I can hack a coke machine, they work if the drop sensors are turned down way to low. I have been working in my position for 5 years and grew up in this buisness and Ive only seen this once on a coke machine. Also very easy to fix because its all within the main board. IF you really wanna steal from them why not just break the glass... its the same thing right? Oh and hi, your stealing from me, for those who say its not stealing. Smile

well... so much for this guy... - zelig, on 10/12/2007, -6/+87@BrainInAjar, don't try arguing with 10,000 18-year olds. It's not worth it.
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -28/+104There's nothing "clever and cool" about using a technique you learned from a video to steal.
- Fascist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+76I like how you put it under "Educational Videos".
- floseb, on 10/12/2007, -4/+63I bet its just a commercial to boost sales via vending machines.
- EochaidRiata, on 10/12/2007, -9/+69Otherwise known as theft.
- Ascendant, on 10/12/2007, -14/+71It's not about nobody watching, it's about doing it in a way that's really clever and cool.
Haven't you seen Office Space? Or Superman II? - jetskidude911, on 10/12/2007, -9/+62Wow, lol. I have this strong urge to go find a vending machine now, lol. Sadly there are none near me. I don't even know where to find one right now. I shall have to go on a quest.
- ogrerocks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+50Second that. Just tried it and it didn't work. This was on an old machine too.
There may be a trick to it. You might have to try to catch it after its already started falling. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+54this is the same idea that the coke "hacks" do.
basically the vending machine cos. decide "hey, our machines are 99% perfect, but in case let's not stiff the poor sucker when they DO fail" then some ***** has to ruin it by doing this *****.
Personally I don't buy snacks from those machines anyhow, but if you do, don't be surprised when some dumb ***** has cleared out the machine this way. - DesireCampbell, on 10/12/2007, -4/+49dugg for use of the word "quest". :)
- marm0t, on 10/12/2007, -8/+53Yeah but free food tastes better.
- JeffH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+43It works. I've seen it done and yes, as far as I know you do have to catch it when it begins to fall. The vending machine will sense if the door is already opened before the fall begins.
- hattable, on 10/12/2007, -0/+40No it has to be a newer machine, the older ones do not have the sensor to make sure you get your food. It only works because the sensor picks up that you did not get any food which would usually result in getting a second try with your money in the machine.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+51Hooray for theft!
Today's kids have no morals. Yes, I mean YOU. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42"How to cheat snack vending machines with simple guides."
totally misspelled "steal from" - writerboyVSgod, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36That's illegal! And it was fake! It was obviously CGI! And you're all Apple fanboys! And PS3 sucks! Ubuntu is good! DRM is bad! The Colbert Report!
Now I can take the rest of the week off. Sweet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+39Beef jerky and a bag of chips cost $1 each? That vending machine sucks!
/That or they're 50 cents a piece and the guy used his change to buy the second.... - petroK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30@Broncho24
a buddy of mine tried the glass-breaking method, it was terribly messy, but fast. - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+28Not wanting to be one of the 13 people a year who die from having a vending machine fall on them.
- myFriendDerrik, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28Helloooooo diabetes!!!
- jakerz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26This video is awesome because of the beef jerky. Awesome.
- WeeklyGeek, on 10/12/2007, -9/+31I like the comments better than the video.
"i am a rich guy
who needs this kind of cheap trick
by aabbyine , 6th December"
"som emore
if it's you who is rich..if your parents..you are just ***** man!
by guywholoves , 6th December"
Awesome. It's like looking into the future of digg. - floseb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22its better than "falling against" a vending machine and then "finding" snacks on the floor - isn't it?
- labmonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Whatever happened to just shaking the thing until all the goodies fall out?
- barryq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Other ways to get free stuff from vending machines:
Coworker used to get a yard stick, lay on his stomach, and fish out all the coins that fell and rolled under the machine that people dropped.
One machine had food in it like sandwiches. Coworker would wait until the vending machine person restocking the machine and threw out the old sandwiches. Coworker would get the still wrapped food out of the garbage can and eat it. Sometimes he would take apart sandwiches and discard the part of it that didn't look good and eat the rest. He didn't understand why we didn't want the food too. - rhfb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Same with the coke machines with the belt and midway dispenser. Lost $2.50 trying to get a 2nd rockstar :( Now I just buy them at a gas station for $1.50
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Some people on digg are ridiculous. Everyone is for downloading movies and TV shows, but when someone steals a 50 cent bag of chips they are wrong and a horrible person.
- whiteEEnerd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20"Me too....."
I see you use AOL. - chrissg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15It actually worked for me, I didn't expect it to work, since we don't have 1 dollar bills in canada
- johntsien, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15I agree. Many if not most vending machines are owned and serviced by small business owners that pay a concessionary fee to have a machine placed in a location and may only own a few of them. This is certainly not 'big business.'
I remember my high school's vending machine was owned and serviced by an old guy who worked two part time jobs and drove his pickup to school in the mornings to stock the machines. Any 'shrinkage' was his problem, not the snack companies'.
Hacking these machines is stealing, plain and simple. And while I agree it sucks that sometimes the machines fail and don't give you a snack, that's an honest failure (and if you stuck another buck in and pressed the same snack again, you'd get your original plus another for later, sometimes). By systematically hacking these machines to steal snacks, you're not ripping off some huge corporate entity but generally some poor schmuck who makes less than your dad and making prices higher for everyone else.
And if you think that just a few people stealing such a small amount doesn't matter, get this fact. I once spoke to a hotel manager about mini-bars. The reason hotel minibars charge 2.00 or more for a coke is because he said that pilferage ran at 40% - 50%. If a standard coke is $1.00 but you lose half of them, you need to charge 2x, or $2.00 to make up for the loss (plus some extra margin for convenience, of course). - shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15@edilclyde
does that man video tape every time he gets something from a vending machine?
either way thats funny as hell. - coldphoenix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13OK well with that logic, the next time the f**king vending machine screws me out of my doritos and 50 cents, I'll take the damned thing to court--it stole MY money.
- xcheats, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Oh STFU. I'd like to see you try someone in court with what was done in the video as tampering. I see that more as poor engineering than tampering.
- moet, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Dosnt the change fall sequentially? Sounded like it all fell at once, was very quiet.
Has any one tried this? - anagoge, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"just turn the vending machine around.. no contraption needed"
I honestly thought that said contraception... - knaps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10"Vending machines are a big part of my life. I like when you reach in the vending machine to get your candy bar and that flap goes up, to block you from reaching up. That's a good invention. Before that it was hard times for the vending machine owners: 'What candy bar are you getting? That one... and every one on the bottom row!'."
"I wanna make a vending machine that sells vending machines... it'd have to be real f***'n big!"
Heh, sorry, any post on Digg about vending machines requires at least a few Mitch Hedberg comments. - scallon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9you think youre going to get taken to court over cheetos?
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Since when do vending machines automatically spit out money if the product doesn't drop? I've never had my money refunded from a stuck bag of chips.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13You sir are a moron.
- oriondr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14I don't see what's wrong with cheating vending machines; they cheat me all the friggin time :@
That said, I have my doubts about this video's authenticity. - joeshlub, on 10/12/2007, -5/+14Yeah jolene, because, supposing it is fake, it would have been SOO difficult to edit in the change falling noise. I'm not speculating one way or the other, just saying that this could have been faked extremely easily
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Dude if you can't afford ***** 50 cents....jezus.
- juno660, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I really don't see the need to moralize over a dollar or so; there are certainly more important things to get upset about than some kid ripping off a vending machine.
Anyways, though, this is how innovations are made. People find bugs and glitches in something, exploit them (often doing something illegal in the process), and someone figures out a better solution to the problem. I'm not saying that I support people doing this sort of thing, but, to me, it just seems like it was inevitable that someone would eventually find it out and exploit it.
@zeliq: ....because we all know that idiocy is confined to those 18 and under and that no one older would ever do this sort of thing... - MrObjectional, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9His problem was trying to argue them through rationality. Not something most have a lot of....
- Quag, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Uhh yes, a "coworker".
;) - dignation, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7damn, i hate it when my snacks hit the laser.
