The entire public school system in California (using this as an example because it is my home state) is ill-equipped for the massive immigrant population from it's southern border and many Asian countries. Having lived up and down the coast, the numbers are correct and probably do account for the apparent lack in IQ. I believe with the correct testing methods that it will become apparent that IQ is not related to race whatsoever, but more in how it is measured.
      I was lucky enough to have an amazing public school experience in southern California and know that this state has some very smart people (think Google, Kevin Rose, Silicon Valley in general).

It's unreasonable to expect that people who aren't fluent in English from early on will be equivilantly successful in our school systems with those who essentially have a step ahead of them. My mom teaches 1st grade in California and needs an interpreter for her parent/teacher conferences which indicates these kids aren't getting the reading/speaking practice at home they need to further their intellect at the same rate as other children.

      I would be more apt to draw a correlation between income level and IQ, then draw a comparison between race and income level. Poorer neighborhoods usually prioritize education lower than middle class neighborhoods. And of course upper income can afford good education. It is unfortunate that minorities tend to be at a lower income level, but this will hopefully balance out over time.

        But you wanna make bets that Asian kids and families, that having lower income and are immigrants, have much higher IQ rates and better education among the other minorities. And yes this including the fact that they are generally poorer as well.

        It really has little to do with race, but instead cultures and what they place high on importance. However, races do tend to flock together - then thus share the culture - and what they value as important or not.

        Basically, what would Bill Cosby say? Is someone gonna blame it on poverty when other cultures strive for education and to get out of poverty? Or are people going to be shamed and take responsibility for themselves and NOT be the norm of their culture?!

It's up to all of us to question why things like this are true, why we are allowing the gap between haves and have-nots to grow, etc. The trick thus far has been to dupe the haves into thinking there's no need to worry about the have-nots, either because they don't matter or because there isn't really a problem.

The author of the data set did not take IQ scores from each state, he worked out how many black people were in each state and then assigned an average IQ using an equation from a racist piece of work that states that blacks are dumb and whites are the smartest of all. He is inventing the correlation. There may well be evidence that their is racial disparity when it comes to IQ, but this is not it.

      • gravityPersists, on 05/17/2008, -3/+5Brain size arguments are not conclusive- The same argument claims that men are more intelligent than women because of brain size, but if you look at the size of an elephant's brain and ask yourself why aren't elephants more intelligent than humans, you might conclude that it's brain mass/body mass ratio that dictates intelligence. But scientists did this, and found that woman have a larger ratio than men, so they argued the other way- that the less the ratio the more intelligent. This just goes to show the inspiration in these... hypotheses.

        There is probably no direct correlation between race and IQ, IQ tests themselves are hardly an objective means of measuring intelligence. There is, however, a correlation between race and quality of education.

To use your example, are there more black people in prison because they're somehow genetically predisposed to being a violent criminal or is it because blacks are generally poorer than whites and therefore more likely to be involved in drugs and gangs?

        Students of history should be aware that a hundred years ago you could have substituted "Irish" for "Black" in the above example and it would have been relevant.

Look at the the Five Points area of New York which was an absolute crime invested part of New York city during the 1800s and was almost entirely Irish. Why? Because they were poor. But at that time people made the same kind of racist stereotypes that the Irish were a bunch of violent, drunk, uneducated thugs that were an "inferior breed".

Data on IQ tests show that it goes Asians Whites Hispanics Blacks, so that kind of destroys the whole argument monospaced just tried to make about immigration since obviously there's a hell of a lot more hispanic immigrants than blacks, yet they score better on the tests.

      It annoys me that people always try to pretend that blacks and whites are completely the same except for skin color, it's a joke really. White people evolved when they went to live in a different region and the only change wasn't skin color. Look at all the physical differences, skin, nose, hair, bone and muscle density (blacks have denser which supports the whole swimming thing) penis size (yes studies show that blacks are bigger). Look at athletic ability, black people are faster, they can jump better, you only need the entire NFL and NBA to prove that. All these physical differences and you're going to try to say that there are no mental ones either? I'm not saying that there should be discrimination or everyone shouldn't be treated equally, we all deserve the same opportunities.

      I'm just saying it annoys the hell out of me that someone automatically goes, with no thought whatsoever, that it's rascist because it takes race and data based off race into consideration, so obviously it must just be a study trying to make minorities look bad. I'm white, asians as a whole are going to be better at math than my fellow whites as a whole, blacks as a whole are going to have bigger penises and be better in many aspects of sports than my fellow whites as a whole. The true closeminded people are the ones that can't accept this and just deny it because of societal pressures, that pretend they're openminded because they "believe that everyone is equal", but in my opinion any beliefs based off of just what you grew up with and your society believes is close-minded, even if it is correct.

There are differences, but we're all still human, and they're not big enought that anything needs to be adjusted for special treatment. Look at the brilliant Supreme Court ruling on Brown v Board of Education, you can't be seperate and equal because one group will feel excluded and like they're being told they're less, that lessens their opportunity, so everyone should be treated equally.

        I agree wholeheartedly that people should be judged, not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. Everyone should be taken as an individual and looked upon as just another person. Also potential is not everything, Gattica makes a good argument for that. It's a movie, the point is determination and how hard you try is much more important than how intelligent you are.

They tend to switch them so that they are thinking right but will say 'left, I mean right' or not even notice the error at all. I have not seen that until moving to AZ. These are otherwise normal functioning people in all walks of society, rich or poor. They are usually educated and white, so being from mexico is not a cause. Very scary when you are driving on the same roads as they are, and they often can't make up their minds in a vehicle either.

If you look at his data the mean comes out to about 98.&change. With a sample size of n = ~300,000,000 and using the formula t-score = (x - mean)/(std/sqroot(n)) we get a fantastically high t-score (t>10000), meaning the average IQ of the united states is actually less than 100.

      This implicates one of two things: either an artificial test specifically designed to produce a distribution around an arbitrary mean paradoxically is unable to produce this arbitrary mean with arbitrary methods, or this map is complete and utter *****.
