UK School Children Fear of being Labelled a Geek
null-hypothesis.co.uk — The fear of being labelled a geek is stopping kids taking up maths. Recent research suggests that people see mathematicians as old, white, middle-class men without a life. It is thought that these preconceptions are the product of the way mathematicians are portrayed in popular culture. What was your maths teacher like?

- jggube, on 05/17/2008, -0/+6It's quite disheartening to see math declining simply because of a label, of stereotypes associated to a particular field of study. People are needed in these "geeky" fields in order for us to progress in knowledge... the trend should be going up, not down.
