- anakast, on 10/12/2009, -2/+493Interesting, but there are a lot of members of Mensa who have contributed nothing except their own egos to society.
- doublefelix, on 10/10/2009, -5/+316He's just 2, and says potentially smart-ass things such as: 'Mummy, sausages are like a party in my mouth!' So commence your IQ vs. intelligence debate while I leaf through an old stack of OMNI magazines for a Mensa application.
- Speedy7, on 10/10/2009, -6/+295He has the same IQ as Einstein, but remember that doesn't automatically mean he is as knowledgeable. I get the idea that people use IQ as a measure of knowledge, whereas it is only an arbitrary measurement with no real meaning.
- BREZZZ, on 10/11/2009, -9/+270It doesn't really mean anything other than how good you are at taking IQ tests.
- hadessniper, on 10/12/2009, -2/+199Child prodigies very rarely grow up to be adult geniuses.
- rmxz, on 10/12/2009, -5/+194From Wikipedia: "Einstein had early speech difficulties" which makes me think IQ's a particularly useless scale. This 2-year-old does seem exceptionally smart, but in a very different way from Einstein.
Using the IQ scale to measure both kinds of intelligence (Einstein's and this kid's) seems as poor a fit as trying to come up with the same scale to measure the strength of earthquakes and hurricanes. - mGARANDEUR1, on 10/12/2009, -4/+189Big deal. I knew a kid with very high IQ that dropped out of high school. IQ doesn't mean anything if the person is lazy.
- dragonlink2, on 10/12/2009, -4/+177i clicked on comments hoping for this.
- FriGuy, on 10/12/2009, -0/+165I remember when I used to be smart.
- Mujokan, on 10/12/2009, -2/+117He's already proposed a grand unified theory of Teletubbies, which postulates that there are really only three of them.
- djtansey, on 10/12/2009, -1/+112The IQ test is basically a measurement of your mental age vs your physical age. So if this 2.5 year old has an IQ of 150-160, he has the mental capacity of a 4 year old (2.5 * 1.6). Does that mean he knows as much as a 4 year old? No. Does that mean he will have fewer problems in life than the kids who have normal IQs? No. It just means he'll be able to process patterns and relationships that wouldn't usually make any sense to a 2.5 year old. (For instance, most 2.5 year olds take things very literally. His comment about sausage indicates that he can abstract to some degree. That is, of course, unless he literally thought a party was happening in his mouth...)
What it does mean is that if the average person can handle the concepts of geometry at 15, he'll be able to mentally handle them at 10. Does that mean he'll be _ready_ to handle them? Not necessarily. If you don't know how to isolate a variable, you will not be able to graph a linear equation. So if he can't be taught at a pace that matches his intelligence, he not have the knowledge necessary to use his mental capacity to full effect.
This is a common problem in youth. Over time, IQs tend to cluster more towards the average (100) because kids weren't able to get the stimulation they needed to keep the brain growing/maturing at 1.6 times the normal rate (100 IQ = 1.0 correlation between physical age and mental age.)
So would there be a positive correlation between IQ and "success?" Yes. Will it be a one-to-one correlation? Absolutely not. There are no perfect predictors of success. But arguing that IQ has nothing to do with capacity/intelligence/success is like saying no one should believe that going to college will help them be successful because there's one person in the world who was successful without going to college.
Note: there's actually some idea that after a certain level, IQ has a lower correlation with success. Someone with an IQ of 130 can get a graduate degree and be a success in his/her field. Someone with an IQ of 160 starts questioning just about everything. Sometimes that causes a new epiphany (Einstein), sometimes that causes social ostracism, confusion, and depression (someone like Jung). - shunban, on 10/12/2009, -6/+109Great, now he can unmake the atomic bomb.
- evanfrey, on 10/12/2009, -2/+103"The other day he said to me, 'Mummy, sausages are like a party in my mouth'."
Has anybody called the authorities? - vodka357, on 10/12/2009, -1/+92I might not be in Mensa but I don't wear diapers either
- tomjthayer, on 10/12/2009, -1/+91This is supposed to be the smartest kid on the planet and the best quote they could get from him is "Mummy, sausages are like a party in my mouth" . . . really?
- LordLampshade, on 10/12/2009, -2/+86This is just stupid.
- acknotSW, on 10/12/2009, -5/+82He might as well buy a rifle and pick out a nice tower now.
- Paranor01, on 10/12/2009, -5/+82IQ =/= Intelligence, just potential intelligence.
- techdever, on 10/12/2009, -0/+70Like Comic Book Guy
- aer0sense, on 10/12/2009, -3/+69It was worth the wait.
- sexybobo, on 10/12/2009, -1/+65As some one with a 149 IQ i can tell you it has helped me become the unemployed person i am today.
- csueiras, on 10/12/2009, -3/+65"The other day he said to me, 'Mummy, sausages are like a party in my mouth'. I've heard that before lol.
- daviz0, on 10/12/2009, -4/+62i bet he can rembember being born
- lorddazzer, on 10/12/2009, -2/+60Only because of the amount of pressure placed on their shoulders. Sad really
- wmuldoon, on 10/12/2009, -3/+60what's wrong with laziness? I'm lazy.. 'spose it sounds nicer when its called "efficient"? I thought that all the internet was, laziness, free porn, social media and video games.
either way; I'd out drink this kid no problems, don't care how smart he is. - Snoogs, on 10/12/2009, -0/+56(for very large values of 2)
- doctordbx, on 10/12/2009, -1/+57Ah Mensa... the organisation founded by people who should be smart enough to know better.
- jackcifer07, on 10/12/2009, -1/+56There is no Nobel prize for solving twisted puzzles and cryptic crosswords.
- damnshoes, on 10/12/2009, -0/+49pew pew pew
- serif69, on 10/12/2009, -3/+50After I was excited that I got into Mensa, my brother (already a member) had this nugget of wisdom:
Just because you're a genius does not mean you're not a dumbass.
So now I have a card that says I'm a dumbass with an above-average IQ. Hooray. - cruzlee, on 10/12/2009, -0/+45This has more text 'n words 'n stuff.
http://www.news.com.au/couriermail/story/0,23739,2 ... - Navicerts, on 10/12/2009, -0/+41Of course it wasn't. That's what high IQ means, it means you are born with the knowledge of how penguins reproduce.
/s - chthonical, on 10/12/2009, -0/+40Considering he had difficulties with mathematics as well as a difficulty in paying attention to things... yeah. He would've been medicated into a mild coma and ignored.
- hove, on 10/12/2009, -7/+45I take offence at that, i've come up with some pretty wicked puns.
- veriix, on 10/12/2009, -1/+38That means if he was a germ he would still be alive after being exposed to anti-bacterial soap.
- Toloran, on 10/12/2009, -4/+39Also, something to consider: One of the factors in IQ tests is your age. So if you answer a certain number of questions at the age of 2 you are a genius, if you answer the same number of questions when you are 18 then you are possibly retarded. Since intelligence doesn't increase consistently, who is to say how smart he'll be when he is older?
TL,DR: Just because he is smart for a 2 year-old that doesn't mean he is going to be smart for an adult. - ajwh, on 10/12/2009, -5/+39Still, IQ is a good indicator for how well someone will do in a academic setting. It's not without its uses.
- ZeroCubed, on 10/12/2009, -2/+34Me too. My parents loved me. Then I said "***** you I'm going to art school" and they didn't love me as much anymore.
- nullcodes, on 10/12/2009, -1/+32Can anyone name a Nobel prize winner in Mensa?
I don't see one in the wikipedia list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Mensans
I guess it isn't surprising to find whacko holocaust deniers among the elitist pricks of Mensa though. - Hyde69, on 10/12/2009, -1/+31yeah, but whats his midi-chlorian count?
- cruzlee, on 10/12/2009, -1/+30Debate commencing any second now.
- Floomdesk, on 10/12/2009, -0/+29... aaaaaaaaaaany second now.
- feomatteo88, on 10/12/2009, -1/+29"If one waits until the last minute it only takes a minute."

- yaosio, on 10/12/2009, -1/+25Have you ever met a lazy two year old, except when it's time to clean up?
- keami, on 10/12/2009, -9/+33Seriously? Has Mensa never heard of regression to the mean? It is likely this kid will drop a whole lot of IQ points by the time he is 5 or 6 years old, and may not qualify anymore. Unless his parents have Mensa level IQ, he will simply regress down to the average of whatever his IQ and his parent's IQ is:
http://www.visi.com/~thornley/david/philosophy/thi ...
(There's also a chance he's somewhere on the autistic spectrum.) - Cyberdropping, on 10/12/2009, -7/+31 'Mummy, sausages are like a party in my mouth'." By the way mummy,- I'm ghey!!!!
- RaulMuadDib, on 10/12/2009, -1/+24That's what she said.
