- melonhedd, on 06/01/2009, -1/+42These aren't "hacks". These are just "things that you can do with magnets".
- jrm125, on 06/01/2009, -2/+37The word "hack" is getting so overused.
- defendliberty, on 06/01/2009, -1/+18If you have young children, be careful about keeping magnets in their reach. 2 swallowed magnets can kill you if they "connect" with intestine between them. Google Magnetix lawsuit.
I love magnets, don't get me wrong, but as a parent I felt compelled to get this info up here. - Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -0/+12Attach a really really strong magnet to the hard drive inside your computer, it will be so fun! You have to try it sometime.
- HallenbeckJoe, on 06/01/2009, -0/+9Yes. Also "lifehacker" is a stupid name, but they provide quality content and that's what counts.
- tMANwi, on 06/01/2009, -2/+10You obviously don't know the origin of the word
- Smokeydabear, on 06/01/2009, -0/+8I have a magnet aquarium cleaner thing, it works great actually.
- neillawson, on 06/01/2009, -0/+7BREAKING: MAGNETS ARE USEFUL
- HamstaMan, on 06/01/2009, -0/+7Magnets are also great as weights to keep your 8-inch floppies from being blown away.
- Rain12913, on 06/01/2009, -0/+5Most of these "hacks" are simply ghetto versions of products that have already existed for quite a few years.
- abrasion, on 06/01/2009, -0/+5Buried for hack misuse.
- jhandfield, on 06/01/2009, -0/+4Obviously it's to make this article stand out from Top 10 Magnet Hacks - Bacon.
- letuescarpe, on 06/01/2009, -0/+4It's actually a really bad idea to keep your spices close to a heat source, since it causes them to break down quickly. Also, Ikea makes tins just like that that already have (very strong) magnetized backs.
- DeadFox1, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3Wow! Will this work on the 5ΒΌ variety too?
- chris, on 06/01/2009, -1/+4I can never find a pen so #6 is awesome!
- dazparkour, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3Never heard of whiteboard paint - I typed it into google and the lifehacker article mentioned is in the top 10 results.
- HallenbeckJoe, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3"Hack has several related meanings in the technology and computer science fields. It may refer to a clever or quick fix to a computer program problem, or to what may be perceived to be a clumsy or inelegant (but usually relatively quick) solution to a problem."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack_(technology) - runep, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3I'm not big in the aquarium scene or anything, but I thought everyone used those.
- bluehouse, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3Hmmm.... how do I get an article about something mundane as magnets on the front page? How about "Magnets: The Next iPhone Killer"... nope... Umm "XKCD comic with magnets"... that won't fly either... I got... "Top 10 Magnet Hacks - Magnets." For no reason at all I'll put magnets in the title twice. That'll get it on the front page
- MadN, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3Came looking for Gauss gun, leaving disappointed.
- ripple123, on 06/01/2009, -0/+3these writers are a bunch of hacks imho.
/ducks - naner, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Is the paint grounded?
- zip000, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Maybe the curry was a bad example. How about a 1/4 cup of habanero powder falling into your ice cream maker.
Really the big problem wasn't stuff falling into other stuff, it is stuff falling out and making a mess and wasting spices.
Hm...scotch tape sounds like a better solution than my crimping solution...to clarify, you mean putting tape around the tin, and then putting the lid on - not putting the lid on and then taping it on - correct? - Smokeydabear, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Well I had never heard of one until about 6 months ago. The thing is pretty great.
- cubs0110, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2"XKCD comic with magnets"
If it was that, 500 people would digg it before looking at it, and Binky would say it was the best ever. - nickels, on 06/01/2009, -1/+3I'll digg this up just so some people get introduced to one of the best sites on the web (besides Digg) - instructables.com. There is so much cool stuff on there it is a nerdy paradise.
- Latigoliath, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Very useful if you care about your knives.
Keeping knives in a drawer could be dangerous for their blades.
Cooks use this technique of hanging knives with magnets. - minnecrapolis, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Yes, put tape around the tin at the top (with the lid off). Usually once or twice around is enough. That way, it makes the lid fit on nice and tight by increasing the girth of the tin.
But now you have me trying to think of something that habanero powder doesn't go with. Again, drawing a blank.
If you think I am kidding, try making Habanero Ice Cream (as per your example). I've made it with fresh chopped Habanero but I am sure powder would work fine also.
It's an odd combination. Cooling your mouth while burning your mouth at the same time. - zip000, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2I made that spice rack about 2 years ago. It sucks. I got the exact same tins, but the lids do not reliably stay on. I'm sure they work fine for what they are meant to do, but stuck up on a wall, the lids fall off way to often. And it isn't pleasant when a whole bunch of curry powder falls in something that curry just doesn't go with.
I resolved it somewhat by crimping the tins, but they don't look as nice, and also it isn't air tight, so somethings have dried out a good deal. - Subduction, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2Also, if you're going to build it you definitely shouldn't put it on the back of the stove as shown.
Spices need a cool, dry place to keep their flavor, and on the back of the stove they're going to be subjected to heat and steam from everything.
A month or two later and you'll have the flavor equivalent of a dust rack. - DforSpiD, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2It's what I do at home, and it means you can throw your knives at the wall to put them away (sort of)
- minnecrapolis, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2I'm still trying to think of something that curry doesn't go with....and am drawing a blank.
That being said, I agree with the lid issue. My solution was to run scotch tape all the way around the tin where the lid goes on. Makes a nice airtight fit. - zip000, on 06/01/2009, -0/+2I put mine on the back of a cabinet door - dark and dry being good for the spices. Unfortunately the problem with the lids is exacerbated by the closing of the door.
- ripple123, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1wow. a article about how you can stick stuff to stuff using magnetics. this s right here, what im gonna do is add it to this nore here, then capitalize the whole thing. here we go.. SNORE.
- marlb0r0, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1I couldn't have said that better!
- FreeTalkLIve, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Most hard drives already have a couple of really strong magnets INSIDE of them.
I have put piles of magnets on hard drives before. It doesn't do jack *****. Myth BUSTED! - chockster, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1No, no, no, no.
HACK a really, really strong magnet to the hard drive inside your computer. - Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1My bad :P
- BridgeBurner, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Sure, a magnetic algae scrubber works great but that's some bad aquarium advice right there...you should never have to empty the aquarium for any reason. If you do, then you're doing it wrong.
- Defiant001, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Then explain those giant magnet hard drive erasers? I think a while back the screen savers or the leo laport show put a usb flash drive through one to see if that gets erased as a test.
- BoneStamp, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Magnetic paint is not exactly a hack, but sticking posters on your wall by sticking magnets over the drywall nails might be. Main benefit, you don't have to repaint your room.
- mrkmrk, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1That ThinkPad magnetic power adapter looks ***** awesome; I think I'll do the same, but using a ring magnet instead of four cylindrical ones.
- muller, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Agree with you... magnets aren't able to easily harm hard drives... I used a really powerful one on an old hard drive a few years ago to see what would happen... it didn't do jack *****.
- TheNyquilKid, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1otherthingsyoucandowithstuff.com is a horrible url though.
- TheNyquilKid, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1That's what she said?
- TheNyquilKid, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1First time visiting lifehacker?
- Subduction, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Was that with the Ikea version mentioned below, or a homegrown rig?
- zip000, on 06/02/2009, -0/+1Yeah, not such a great example either except the volume. I've made several deserts with habaneros and they go very well.
How about tarragon in your guacamole?
Garlic powder in your apple pie? - Subduction, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1Cool. I wonder whether the Ikea version solves the lid problem. They'd better, for that kind of money.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/8010291 ... - zip000, on 06/01/2009, -0/+1I made my own with tins from Lee Valley - I still get their catalog, it has some cool stuff in it - hot glue and magnets.
I attached a metal plate to the back of the cabinet door to stick them to. -
