- lostarchitect, on 11/09/2009, -5/+100Let's not encourage undereducated cops to play psychologist, ok?
- Stevosaurous, on 11/09/2009, -2/+72I don't believe a word of this...
- vpendse, on 11/09/2009, -2/+54This is pretty stupid. Apparently, if you put a coffee mug between you and another person, you're lying about everything you're saying!
- fragMasterFlash, on 11/09/2009, -3/+52This is why you always ask for a lawyer. Even if you are innocent you will be nailed to wall if it makes one cops life easier.
- homercles337, on 11/09/2009, -3/+45Yep. Pretty much 100% *****.

} - Heaiser, on 11/09/2009, -2/+34I'm a cop... I don't think like this. (And yes, I'm aware this statement is setting myself up for some good burns.)
- Mawds, on 11/09/2009, -1/+32I think someone has been watching 'Lie To Me'
- DeathfireD, on 11/09/2009, -0/+30shy and nervous people do almost everything on this list so this would be moot if you're in an interview or meeting a women you like.
- howdareyou, on 11/09/2009, -3/+31If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.
- Barackalypse, on 11/09/2009, -8/+31Actually, its only everyone who isn't a cop that is lying.
- relvlixd, on 11/09/2009, -1/+24I've studied deception in the past and to my knowledge the only thing they have gotten right in this article is that Paul Ekman discovered Micro expressions.
When they mentioned placement of objects between them it acts as a defensive barrier, it doesn't mean their lying, their is hundreds of other reasons.
Being defensive doesn't mean their lying. Fear of being disbelieved is the same as fear of being caught, fear is fear.
The eye diagram is partially correct, but not in all circumstances.
Verbal context is important, liars tend to have short and simple stories (easy to remember) and truth tellers usually add irrelevant detail.
"Bottom line is, be trusting, instead of taking the chance that you mistakenly disbelieve someone when in reality they are telling the truth. You'll be happier in the end." -Paul Ekman - werdywerd, on 11/09/2009, -2/+22Now I know why my girlfriend always looks left, puts a cup of coffee between us and scratches behind her ears every time she tells me "Baby you are so big" :(
- Apex3, on 11/09/2009, -0/+20That's all well and good, but if a cop thinks like this, they need to learn that people act differently around cops than they do around normal people.
I just can't stand when cops think it's suspicious when you're nervous. of course I'm ***** nervous, you're trying to give me a ticket(or more), whether I did it or not doesn't have a whole lot to do with whether I get a ticket for it. - Heaiser, on 11/09/2009, -0/+19A good indicator tends to be the smell. Don't smoke it in the car and I probably won't know. I live in a state where a small amount of marijuana is a petty misdemeanor (like a traffic ticket). I generally don't care enough to hunt it out. If you're really concerned about it and for some reason must have it in the car, keep it in the trunk where I can't look without a probable cause warrant.
- blackturtleus, on 11/09/2009, -0/+17The "article" is 99.9% BS, but some of these comments show that there are actually intelligent beings on this planet! This "article" is full of the kind of BS that people who are into Oprah or Dr. Phil get all excited about. It's the same kind of BS that people who actually believe that polygraphs are any more accurate than tossing a coin buy hook, line, and sinker! The "article" is depressing because it is so stupid, but some of the comments show that not everyone belongs to the mindless Oprah/Dr. Phil herd and that shows that there is some hope.
- spworm, on 11/09/2009, -1/+18Is he black?
He's got a gun! BLAM BLAM BLAM. - rmxz, on 11/09/2009, -0/+15Hand movement's no clear sign of anything.
I've seen a physicist fidget with his hands like crazy when giving a lecture; and unless he was some extreme creationist I don't think he thought he was lying. - appleseed1234, on 11/09/2009, -2/+15Thinking like a cop flowchart:
Is he lying? -> Yes -> Tase
Is he on the ground? -> Yes/No -> Tase again - Heaiser, on 11/09/2009, -2/+14I used to be a programmer, now I'm a cop. I'm printing this off and putting it on my wall. Dugg.
- spworm, on 11/09/2009, -2/+13Unless they're very good at it. Then they become billionaires or influential politicians, and ***** on the dreams of honest people like you.
- Jeepinator, on 11/09/2009, -1/+11Your lying what?
- elephantstomp, on 11/09/2009, -2/+11Buried as inaccurate.

- marm0lade, on 11/09/2009, -0/+9I can tell by the pixels.
- charlietuna, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8 I read that cops do worse than average in detecting lies.
- T8erT0T, on 11/09/2009, -2/+10Today is the day I won't make an easy joke about cops and the ability to think.
- mike23w, on 11/09/2009, -1/+8You're a genius.
/Moves cup between me and vpendse - kaosethema, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7or you can use scare tactics and sensory deprivation until they sign a confession to a crime they didn't commit...

- TrevorPace, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7So wait if the person is a 130year old man you want to sexually harass them?
- peteyb1313, on 11/09/2009, -4/+10woah slow down there, you are implying there are educated cops, dont be silly.
- fnic, on 11/09/2009, -1/+7The writer was lying for sure. I can tell by their eyes and face.
- TheCollective00, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6Sicilians are great liars. The best in the world. I'm Sicilian. My father was the world heavy-weight champion of Sicilian liars. From growing up with him I learned the pantomime. There are seventeen different things a guy can do when he lies to give himself away. A guys got seventeen pantomimes. A woman's got twenty, but a guy's got seventeen... but, if you know them, like you know your own face, they beat lie detectors all to hell. Now, what we got here is a little game of show and tell. You don't wanna show me nothin', but you're tellin me everything. I know you know where they are, so tell me before I do some damage you won't walk away from.
- Rockyn, on 11/09/2009, -0/+5Or else they are lying about that.
- LEfan, on 11/09/2009, -2/+7Because cops aren't everyones' friend the way firefighters are. Cops have the authority that everyone fears, therefore, they lie.
- aceallways, on 11/09/2009, -2/+6The single comment is so true!
Hey, it's William Shatner (circa Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)! - Ben - niradg, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4I really like the 3rd photo in this article. Anyone know where it's from?
- kestermatsumoto, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4"...keep their bodies close to themselves"

Yes I'm being an irritating grammar Nazi, but I wish people would learn how to write. - Lefts, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Yeah, sure.
- lurrch1, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4And if they float they're a witch, but if they sink.... well it doesn't matter anyways.
- CanIGetAWitness, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5Nice one Jeep, but I don't think he'll get it, so...
You're lying - dsfjvhbd, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3Right in the first paragraph the same nonsense as always:
nervous/uncomfortable -> lying
calm/comfortable -> telling the truth
This remains nonsense no matter how often it gets repeated. - Jeff901, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4So, now that you can tell if someone is lying, what do you do about it?
NOTHING. Let them go in their lies..EVERY lier will eventually hang themselves with their own lies.......just sit back and watch the fun unfold. - ryrocker, on 11/21/2009, -0/+3pstroll is a very sick man
- rmxz, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4Are you sure in this context:
"If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a skull"
wouldn't fit better? - vanguardanon, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3As I was reading this I was thinking, "This is 100% horse *****." However, your response works for me as well.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 11/09/2009, -0/+3I think this "liar detection" is really a great way to detect when someone is uncomfortable with you.
So the more anxious a police office makes a suspect... the more guilty he or she appears.
I've always wondered about the 80% of the time, it's someone in the family rule of thumb in law enforcement. I think, most of the time, the person who is going to be the suspect, is anyone the police could catch at the crime scene and make uncomfortable.
The propensity to believe their own keen senses, is probably a rationale for how often police likely doctor evidence, lie and even plant evidence because they are SURE THIS PERSON is guilty. And it's a self-fulfilling prophesy, because they think they can tell guilt, they make guilt, so they always catch the guilty.
After someone has been wronged by the system, fingerprinted, and thrown in prison -- they likely have their job prospects ruined for life. The recidivism is proof positive of what a criminal this person was in the first place. But what is the recidivism of falsely convicted people? Maybe about the same as guilty people.
If we ever actually got a lie detector that worked -- it would be immediately outlawed because it would catch half the people in authority and almost all the politicians. - sepelester, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I once placed a coffee mug between me and my girlfriend, and I wasn't even lying!
