Yes, the united kingdom has debt troubles too, but honestly folks - our national debt stays in balance with our gross national product for the most part, unlike america which has had to sell off a huge portion of its national debt to the chinese. good luck when they call in that debt.

Western nations including the US, UK and EU are consumer economies first and foremost. They rely on consumer spending. In that case, it is vital to shift the availability of capital to consumers just like industrial concerns required access to capital in the past. Bingo...lots 'o' debt for consumers. The positive side is the risk to debt is much smaller because it is parceled out to small borrowers (until it gets re-bundled into mortgage backed securities).

True... but what about as a country? GB isn't as in debt as America is financing a greed fueled wars in the middle east. At least if their economy began to collapse because of these high debt ratios the crown would be in a better position to help the people. Here in the US... well, it's happening right now; you can see how F'd up our chances are.

You folks act like this is a WESTERN condition. Having lived in East Asia I can tell you that they (especially the less financially sophisticated like Thailand, Vietnam) are headed for disaster as far as credit cards are concerned.
Get a job, get a card and buy the best cell phone and a TV for mamasan...its free.

lol, well i live i glasgow, and i was (probably am) roughly say £10- £15,000 in debt, and hey why not, my bank decide to screw me over so i told them to go and play with themselves, and guess how much they got back!!?? thats right, nothing, see the banks dont make the laws in this country (well they have to atleast pretend they dont) so as long as i make an "effort" to pay, they cant do *****, and they wont get ***** from me, and nothing will ever happen, other than a bad credit rating, which is easy to fix when you know how!! my house is safe, my stuff is safe, i can get medical treatment when and if needed, i have food when i need it, and i wont go to jail!!

I'm from the UK and only have about £1500 debt left (I'm 23 so not bad going), I don't think I'd have used the word 'vom' though - personally I've never heard anyone use it. Blowing Chunks is a bit more accurate! Great!

Not really about the article, but anyhoo...There really isn't such a thing as a Britishism, as there is such a variation of language in Great Britain. I find it a little bit of annoying when Americans say "Brits" when they mean the English, and even then, these slang words are really just ***** or posh, when there is a huge range of accents and slang . It seems that some Americans forget that Great Britain consists of England, Scotland, and Wales. There is no such thing as a generalised "British accent" or even an "English accent" really. Try comparing geordie to cornish- both are completely different, and both are completely unintelligible :) ( Oh yeah, and you want to try listening to Welsh, or Scottish Gaelic -technically British languages)
