- steelese, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17This is done at a test airport in eastern Washington state, in a town called Moses Lake. I lived in the take-off and landing path of these planes for a little while. The winds don't get horrible, but when it blows they send up all of the pilots. It is a test school, mostly for JAL, but other Boeing uses it also. I guess they want them in as much extreme condition as possible. I was always worried that they would crash into my house.

Google maps link to this location. - treas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9from the movie description : "WOW! This is a pretty cool video of a 777 & 747 SP landing in a cross winds down in Brazil. This little item shows the Boeing factory determining the demonstrated crosswind landing limits on the 777 and the 747SP. The engineers make educated guesses, but then the test crews have to go actually prove the numbers. They sneak off to Brazil to do these tests at a certain remote BAF airbase famous for its continual atrocious crosswinds...Should the gear sideloads be excessive and fold one up, there is nobody there to take nasty pix for the Airbus guys to wave around in the press."
Note the Portuguese writing too. - tonich03, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46Fast and furious 4: Boeing drifting. Where a group of teenagers discover their true destiny - Boeing drifting.
- Venky80, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought it was in Iceland, I am pretty sure i heard it right during a news footage
- cvrefugee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I used my semi-decent Portuguese skills to translate the video:
It's not every day that we find calm winds.
What do you do in these situations?
FLY.
Return to the time of the Aero Club.
Remember your instructors
and make a safe landing.
These pilots certainly flew conventional airliners.
Learn with the best.

- SR388, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23What, no love for Enigma?
- theberlindoctor, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11damn. and i had just forgotten how annoying that song can be.
Is it just me or is the landing gear twisting/bending itself to be lined up with the approach path instead of the angle of the aircraft?
- Eliot99, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Unbelievable skill. Great vid.
- mt066, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Skills that pay the bills?
- AgentBorrelli, on 10/12/2007, -23/+4Deja vu much?? These crosswind videos pop up on Digg's front page every 4 months.
- theberlindoctor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Some people have lives outside of digg.
New to me. - Eisim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this vid is on the front page .-.all.-.the.-.time.-. so, just because theberlindoctor happens to have a life in his school band, it's ok for everyone to re-post their 5 weeks old crap AGAIN - come on, theberlindoctor missed it while he was on rehearsal! where's the oldest 'will it blend'?! REWIND!
by the way - this video is actually cool. - TeCuervo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, I have a life outside of digg too... too bad it's WoW

- mymate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3one in the very middle is practically sideways - amazing pilots!
- Misaiato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Craziness. My uncle was an F4 pilot in the last Gulf War - he used to tell us stories about landings like these - but now I've seen it and they planes are a lot bigger.
- nipuL, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I've been in a 60 passenger dual-prop aircraft that did a crosswind landing. To give you an idea of the weather conditions, there was a massive low pressure system just off the coast. I was sitting in the back of the plane and it was probably one of the scariest moments I've had. I had no idea the angle we were approaching the landing strip at, but when it landed the tail just whipped around.
I can only imagine what this would be like in a Boeing 777. Some of those crosswinds were insane!- cedric, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2..and what appears as just a slight move from the outside sometimes, can be a massive shake for passengers inside the plane (my impression after a scary bounce when landing in London, when everyone screamed on the plane)
- terranaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was in an Airbus 332 coming into Manchester UK at 10 degrees counter-clockwise to the direction of the runway due to crosswinds, however, whilst the pilot was the complete professional as is to be expected, the cabin crew weren't. We were sitting three rows from the back and could hear them criticizing the fact that the plane was coming in sideways, which didn't help my wife who is a nervous flier.
In this day and age of seat back mounted screens displaying external camera views, there should be a pre-recorded message explaining why their plane isn't pointing at the runway that it is due to be landing on.
- snipes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Should be called Boeing drifting.
- listrophy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Is called forward-slip landing. Related to sideslip.

- kpsk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's called a crab landing.
- deaconyermouf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2worst music ever
- TheSpeaker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I solute the test pilots! Their exceptional skills will save hundreds if not thousands of people in the future.
- Cyclonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0id land it, two times.
- danielce, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3God that music was awful!
People, don't "rape" a good video with music like that... - rowlodge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the B52 had the same problem when it first came out in the 50's, so the designers added steerable main landing gear as well as the front wheel, it was a secret at first in that day. i'm guessing it's not necessary today because of advanced sturdier materials built in.
- Dou6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This isn't sideslip landing or crap landing. The idea is that you approach at that angle to counter the crosswind, but adjust your angle at the last second so as to land normally and roll. What they are doing here has everything to do with testing the stability of the landing gear in a botched crab, and nothing to do with actually proving it's crosswind limits.
- D4N747, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The last two videos are pretty crazy, reminds me of the first (now shut down) Hong Kong Intl. airport.
Search "TAK" on Youtube and you're likely to find some other extreme crosswind landings. The skill of these pilots never cease to amaze me. - stagl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1dugg for enigma.
