- TrevorBelmont, on 10/10/2007, -10/+235Drugging children is an important and often overlooked part of parenting. I think it's great that videos like this draw attention to the issue. If we work together, we can drug all the children in America, maybe even the world!

- illegalamigo, on 10/10/2007, -1/+106My ADD won't let me focus for an hour and thirty four minutes. Maybe I need a new prescription?
- beasty_dave_Mk2, on 10/10/2007, -2/+95this made me think about what I would do if I had kids in todays world...so I'm getting a dog. perhaps 2.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -1/+90This new era of commercialized psychiatry is *****. Here they are talking about children, but this extends far beyond children. It applies to everyone. It's just easier to target children for medication because they have no real say in the issue. If I went to a psychiatrist and was honest about all of my "problems" (aka life), I'd be on a list of medication so long that I'd probably go bankrupt after nine months.

- feshmania, on 10/10/2007, -4/+67i actually do have ADHD. In school, I had pretty extreme problems concentrating and even to this day I can't sit still at all (at 23 years old); but without drugs I was able to train myself to focus. It was one of the hardest things I've ever done, but my parents refused to let me go on any prescription because they felt they could parent better than Riddlen (sp?).
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -3/+65You people who think it's ok for teachers to dole out drug recommendatioons, should go play in traffic. I was called in to my daughter's school because two of her teachers decided my kid had A.D.D. I told them to go ***** themseves. The problem was, the school sucked so bad, my kid was bored to death learning at a mind-numbingly slow pace, from moronic, boring teachers. She would talk to her friends and mess around in class, so they instantly labeled her ADD.
We moved to a new state and put her in a magnet international school of study (an IB school), and she's one of the top students in her class. Guess what, no freaking drugs. Kids will act out in school if they are bored and the classes are not challenging them. I think many kids probably get stuck on drugs when this happens because parents are all too willing to take the school's untrained idiotic advice. Why not? They let their kids play endless hours of video games, and poison them with TV. Most kids barely go outside anymore, and their parents don't mind as long as they aren't being bothered. How big of a stretch is it to say, "sure, put my kid on drugs" for parents like this? - jkizzle, on 10/10/2007, -1/+56i think a third of my senior class was taking aderol legally, and another third was taking it illegally
- tyywebb, on 10/10/2007, -24/+77Scientologists are spamming Digg now?
- asdfasdf, on 10/10/2007, -13/+65Beating your kids is overlooked. If your kid misbehaves, you smack him so he learns to behave, you don't give him amphetamines.
How come everyone today is too much of a pussy to smack their kids around?
http://www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net/c.cgi?u=beat - vhold, on 10/10/2007, -2/+36Holy crap.. got more into the video.. at around 24 minutes in, there is a woman's story about how her child was put into protective services because she refused to drug him.

When are people going to realize its NOT THE NUMBER OF DIGGS that gets a story promoted. That is only part of it. - newAccount, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22you kids have it easy, when I was your age I had to get a weekend job and buy my own drugs.
- wageslaven, on 10/10/2007, -3/+23Gary Null is a Scientologist.
Gary Null is identified as a quack by The James Randi's Education Foundation:

Children *are* being drugged too much. Forcing them onto drugs in order to recieve public services should be illegal.

BURIED AS SCIENTOLOGY SPAM - cfd339, on 10/10/2007, -8/+26I'm an adult who is on ADD meds. I've studied it, I've worked with my doctors to figure out the right doses, and I can tell you there are people like me helped a great deal by the drugs.
Its not that there is something wrong with my brain. Its that the way I'm wired would lead me to a role that doesn't fit well within modern society. I'd make a better hunter-gatherer -- changing direction and action in a moment based on circumstance -- than I would a farmer working steadily and ignoring distractions.
For reasons nobody seems to understand yet, the stimulants in the ADD meds give someone like me more control over when to focus on something and when not to. For those of you wired differently, these same drugs would likely make you psychotic.
Its dangerous to over perscribe these powerful meds; but its terribly frustrating not to have them for those who are helped. - kdepa, on 10/10/2007, -2/+19Unfortunately the vast majority of children who are given ADD/ADHD medications are simply misdiagnosed. (I have discussed this with multiple medical professionals who are family members and friends of mine) This isn't to say that some children don't need some sort of medication, but it should always be used as a last resort.
A friend of my aunt's has a child who was diagnosed with ADHD. Instead of recommending meds, the doctor said that they should try to cut out things like preservatives and additives in what they eat - basically he told them to eat healthier. Guess what? It worked. No drugs needed, the kid is no longer showing signs of the disorder. With all the garbage most americans eat, it's no wonder people are beginning to have medical problems related to it. It's amazing what a difference eating "real" nutritional food is compared to prepackaged, preprepared additive filled "food" that has little, if any nutritional value. - knightblade2oo4, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21not that it matters a lot, but i live like 10 minutes from there. scary *****.
- Vipersfate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16Give a kid a drug, problem goes away eh? I'm about 1/10 the way through this film, and I realize what they are saying.
Set it and forget it, right? meh. they wanted to put me on those kind of drugs, I declined and refused. Now I'm in college, and I'm doing great, at least I think. - ElPachuco, on 10/10/2007, -2/+17Ah, the ever credible Gary Null..
- mal1964, on 10/10/2007, -5/+19Greed and Money behind this, Who would of thunk?
- vhold, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Well, if they are your kids, you don't have to put them on drugs.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -9/+23While I appreciate the fact that many kids who are just being active children are over medicated like this, I'm not a fan of propaganda videos that do things like blame Columbine on these drugs. Not a fan of Gary Null, as he's something of a quack.
- BonerMachine, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16God, ***** SCIENTOLOGY. I will never forgive them for championing such a serious issue. NO ONE LIKES YOU *****, YOU AREN'T HELPING ANYTHING. (that last part was to scientologists)
- rhinopig, on 10/10/2007, -6/+19My understanding (and I could be wrong) is that psychiatrist have shown that positive reinforcement (rewards, praise when kids do good things) is far more effetive than negative reinforcement (beating). Smacking the kid isn't going to teach him to behave, but simply to behave when your around. Where as rewarding a child for good behavior will make him want to do that behavior more AND make him want to remain around you so he can be rewarded (but will lead to more of that behavior while your not around).
I think the best way to raise a child is rewarding good behavior and setting a good example. Ofcourse those techniques can take years to become really effective and if your kid is crying in a store hitting him might be seen as your only option. Just not the best. - SirBryce, on 10/10/2007, -1/+14Don't be mad at him, that was just his dyslexia.
- Yez70, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15This is a better way to drug your children.
http://www.laughparty.com/funnyjoke/Drug-Problem/1266/ - TonySki, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16I took Riddalin for ADHD and all that happenned to me was that I got more hyper. that ***** sucks.
- HerrEisenheim, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17"In our society there is a real stigma against psychiatric medication."
WHAT?!?!?! What the ******* are you talking about? There is no stigma. There's as much of a negative stigma towards people who are on psychiatric medication as there is a stigma towards people who go to Starbucks. Everyone's on something nowadays.
"And many families are struggling with ADHD, depression, and other treatable problems but won't go to a psychiatrist because they're ashamed or feel that would admit they're weak."
There's a non-medical term for that. It's called life. Most people can't focus. Most people get depressed. They aren't sick. That's life. - Wosat, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13If you took Ritalin and it made you hyper, congratulations -- you don't have ADHD!
- reventlov, on 10/10/2007, -10/+22This has nothing to do with Scientology. This has to do with the epidemic of misdiagnosis and drugging-for-profit in the US school system, which is so much ***** trouble right now that you should take films like this seriously. The experts in the film are not againt using drugs on children who need it, but they are trying to tell you that a vast majority of the children don't need it and are being given amphetamines because they're "difficult" and there are long term consequences to this of which you need to be aware. ADD/ADHD is something you diagnose after every other problem has been looked at, but in this quick-fix society parents are being fooled and/or forced into doping their kids to make them compliant.
Of course, you probably haven't even watched the flim. - tdowling, on 10/10/2007, -1/+13That would be awesome if Rolf were my dog.
- WeaponMit, on 10/10/2007, -4/+15I have an idea, stop giving him so much sugar! Get him on a healthy diet, ban him from the tv, computer and video games until he has spent at least an hour a day playing outside. SPEND time with your kid! As INCREDIBLE as it may seem, civilization has existed without Ritalin and other drugs for THOUSANDS of years. Psychiatric drugs are for pussies.
- crawf061, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12stfu
- silverwolfe, on 10/10/2007, -3/+12There was only 1/3 left *****.
- fanclerks, on 10/10/2007, -3/+11Too afraid of having the kids call CPS or something.
- lex0429, on 10/10/2007, -8/+161 hour and 43 minutes...ahhh no thanks
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+10Is your dog hyper-active? Like to play catch too much, or perhaps your dog is lethargic and likes to sleep too much? A combination maybe?
Good News friend, we now have a drug for that! - JigoroKano, on 10/10/2007, -3/+10A known quack
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_Null#Criticism - Vipersfate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Why wasn't this stuff as massively forced on my parents when they were kids, or my older cousins etc? This stuff was always around, my parents were always in trouble in school, now they both have great jobs, and their lives are normal according to the social standard.
- subterfuge, on 10/10/2007, -4/+11the truth is that as fewer pressures of natural selection occur on humans, more "flawed" humans survive and reproduce. in the wild, a mentally retarded human probably wouldnt live very long. kids with ADD are slightly flawed, and by giving them medication you're patching them up. if you've ever been around a friend who as ADD who didnt take his medication that morning, you'll notice that he's pretty strange. ADD medication is to the brain what blood thinners are to the heart. in the future we'll be able to fix the entire genome so you wont have to take any ritalin or blood thinners, but until then we have to keep patching people up.
- BlackGlenn, on 10/10/2007, -8/+14Am I really supposed to be so stupid as to believe the "nice little Mormon boy" didn't know what a hallucination was? Puh-leeze. Pass the Ritalin.
- TellarHK, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8That sounds exactly like a Scientology checklist for checking your thetans or whatever the hell.
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Check into what private schools cost in the US and you will have a clue. The fact is, just because schools are public, doesn't mean they have to suck. We, as in society, have simply allowed this to happen, so that's how it is. We have allowed all of the *****-storm we find ourselves in to happen. Time to wake the hell up.
- natedouglas, on 10/10/2007, -1/+7Integration of the desired behavior is something like 6% effective with physical or verbal abuse, and something like 85% effective with lectures. Note the lack of serial killers with warm, loving parents, and the number of them that were abused as kids.
- selphishnerd, on 10/10/2007, -3/+9I probably could have been diagnosed ADHD or ADD as a child, but my mom didn't want me dependent on drugs. I was forced to deal with it for several years and now I'm fine. There might be a few cases where medication is necessary, but I think ADD and ADHD are pseudo-conditions that are ridiculously over diagnosed.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -4/+10Honestly, as a gun owner and passionate fan of freedoms of all sorts, I must say that guns do not kill people. I know of not a single study that has been done linking GUNS ONLY to an increase in violent behavior of any kind.
Impressionable children exposed to continual violent mainstream media and television with uncaring parents leads to people dying from guns in the hands of children. -
