The Decline and Fall of Quality on Digg
readwriteweb.com — An extensive study on how quality has started to decline over the years/months on DIGG

- Slices, on 05/02/2008, -1/+17Will DIGG ever grow out of the teen age? I guess we can only stick around and do our best effort to make sure it does. Some of those kids out there are killing themselves will all the rampant cynicism - I swear.... sometimes DIGG feels just your standard highschool's playground.
- mark076h, on 05/02/2008, -9/+3So let me get this right all of MrBabyMan's top 10 lists are Quality Content?
- zaibatsu, on 05/02/2008, -2/+13I agree all the top 10 lists, stupid pets and just crap news that I even admit to submitting shouldn't be on the frontpage. I really do try: http://digg.com/users/zaibatsu/history/submissions ... well
- AManWithNoName, on 05/02/2008, -3/+5Ironically enough, in my upcoming diggs list, this article is right below this:
http://digg.com/movies/High_School_Musical_3_Poste ... - ani625, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2Stuff always evolves..
- ilid, on 05/02/2008, -0/+5One persons news is another's spam huh? I really started liking Digg, not so sure about the trust factor anymore though...
- esengulov, on 05/02/2008, -0/+6Dugg for graphs!
- Dradis, on 05/02/2008, -1/+4I used to go to Digg multiple times a day, and relied on it as a source of interesting and informative news that I maybe wouldn't have been able to find otherwise. Now I go there maybe once a week, and I'm dismayed to see that almost all of the top stories are LOLCats, funny pictures of animals, and often content that my mom forwards me that was old 5 years ago.
Content quality is a difficult thing to control, but I think Digg has to step up and realize that it isn't what it used to be. Perhaps it's the algorithm, new users, I don't know; I hope that something changes, or I'm going to start looking through other social news sites. - joiknine, on 05/02/2008, -1/+0i felt like i had to go with the irony and digg this.
- Bukowsky, on 05/02/2008, -0/+7Very interesting analysis. I think one thing that should also be stated, is the categories in which each user submits more of on a frequent basis. What I mean by that, is that every digger whom submits stuff on a regular basis, tends to submit into certain categories more frequently...
For example, I personally LOVE sports. Especially anything about Houston sports, so I frequently submit articles about the Astros & Rockets. However, when I submit those articles, I do realize that (most of the time) they are going to fall flat on the FP. But, I personally don't care, because it's something that means alot to me and that I'm passionate about.. and if a few FP diggers actually read the story and write a positive comment, then I am happy with that, because it means that I submitted something good, that somebody found interesting. Even if the positive comments are clustered in between - "Who Cares About Sports!!" comments. - v666, on 05/02/2008, -0/+4and eventually it got buried, hmmm

Was it really the "readers" ...
Great info hear, someone did their homework and then some. The graph really helps paint the picture that something ain't right here.- defska42, on 05/02/2008, -0/+2What would life be like without a good conspiracy theory?
- Footinmymouth, on 05/02/2008, -0/+1That does seem kinda ...fishy that something against the platform was marked as "innacurate..."
- controltheweb, on 05/02/2008, -0/+3Show me anywhere on the interwebs quality = popularity ...
- Odenized, on 05/03/2008, -0/+2Excellent post by Muhammad. Interesting how one of the Top Users criticizes the overall content. A great call to action.
- life38, on 05/16/2008, -0/+1The part that I do not like is that many comments are useless. The other part is that people do not like when you post your own information to add to an article. The other part that I do not like is some of the negative comments are just unnecessary to either the post or the subject. There is a need sometimes to add material especially when making a multi level argument in a response.
