- one504, on 05/25/2009, -2/+30Interesting - never heard of "Gray Memorial Day."
- momzilla54, on 05/25/2009, -4/+28Thanks for this. It will be a sad day when nobody remembers what it is for.
- Stevanoski, on 05/25/2009, -3/+15Here in my little berg in NM the teachers continually voted to not honor it. After 9/11 the teachers union finally voted to make it a holiday.
- tonage, on 05/25/2009, -1/+11Even if war stopped today, the ones that have already been lost would still be lost. And I hope never forgotten.
- jetboyterp, on 05/25/2009, -2/+7True, and I for one couldn't care less what Google does with their logo on holidays...but they do more for Arbor Day than they would for Memorial Day.
- JimmyTheClam, on 05/25/2009, -7/+11"The govt prohibited us from seeing the flag draped coffins of troops returning home after getting killed in Iraq."
Yeah, keeping the hard left from using our war dead as propaganda tools was a horrible thing to do, mrogi. - theonlywizdum, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3You do realize that war isn't that simple, right? This isn't a Simpson's comic, Bush didn't just "point the army and shoot".
- jetboyterp, on 05/25/2009, -6/+812th Fact: Nobody gives a rats ass for that tripe on Memorial Day. And for the record, Bush didn't start the "no pics" thing which started long before the Iraq war. And you KNOW soldiers die in war. Do YOU really need to see their coffins arriving at Dover?
Piss off.
Do something nice and thank a vet. - utp216, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Very informative page there. Maybe some folks will read up on what Memorial Day is really about and not just use it for an excuse to drink way to much and act like a bunch of *****!
- macslut, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2I look at it more like spending time with family and celebrating exactly that which their dying helped enable/protect. Plus, it's not all we're doing. There are some great documentaries airing, some film houses show special series this week, and there are tons of ceremonies taking place. Personally, I spent quite a bit of time this week studying and researching WWI and WW2.
- oldhick, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Really? Most?
- ammundsen, on 05/25/2009, -0/+1I live in NC and I bet most people here have not heard of it either. Since the original holiday was only for Union soldiers it made sense to have a holiday to honor your war dead. If I had to guess it is something that will be done away with in the not too distant future.
- ammundsen, on 05/25/2009, -1/+2I would have to agree that most Americans really dont care about Memorial Day. Well, they care about getting a day off of work, going to the pool, and getting drunk. Those darn Germans hated days off of work, pools, and certainly getting drunk!
- macslut, on 05/26/2009, -3/+4Google wanted to do more with their logo, but apparently the Memorial Day Fairy is too ***** difficult to work with.
Seriously, why don't you suggest something to Google for next year. Other than red, white and blue or other patriotic themes that Google *has* done in the past, and aren't really specific to Memorial Day, what would you suggest? - v1rotate, on 05/26/2009, -1/+2You are totally missing the point of a holiday, especially one like this.
- theonlywizdum, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Whats it like being a tool that can't think for himself?
- macslut, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1True, but this year it's on a Saturday. Most of us are getting Friday and Monday off...as well as Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, for the full month, every month!!! Isn't America great?
- jordanlgta, on 05/25/2009, -5/+3Well if you "love" it then why do you call Google "*****" ?
- salstress, on 05/25/2009, -7/+5Oh a yellow ribbon! You're right that is something. How ironic (or not so really) that this is the first time they have done anything on Memorial Day, and they chose to put up a yellow ribbon. Wait a minute... a yellow ribbon?!?!? A yellow ribbon signifies remembering those who are currently fighting in war, e.g., those soldiers currently in Iraq and Afghanistan. It does NOT signify remembering those who have given their lives for their country. So again, they seem to be making a political statement. Even worse than having nothing there - it's an emblem reminding us to "bring our troops home" which is the mantra of the left. So my point stands: they refuse to honor the dead who gave their lives for this country.
- mrogi, on 05/26/2009, -4/+2Memorial Day is a time of remembrance for the 4,000 dead soldiers sent to die in Iraq based on a lie. Bush had the unmitigated gall to joke about it at the White House Corespondents Dinner. He looked under the podium and smirked, "Well, no WMD here."
There ain't a hole deep enough in the bowels of Hell for a mofo who would send our troops to die and laugh about it. - scoottie, on 05/25/2009, -7/+5And Obama ***** on everything the vets fought and died for every time he speaks while turning this nation into a socialist nation.
- treeromeo, on 05/25/2009, -4/+1What are you talking about? They do have a yellow ribbon, which isn't much but it's still something.
- salstress, on 05/25/2009, -10/+7I love how google will have a special logo doodle for just about every idiotic occasion there is, but they refuse to do one on Memorial Day. Way to go google *****.
- missinglink, on 05/25/2009, -7/+3All holidays should be tied to Mondays or Fridays. July 4 on a Wednesday sucks.
- jordanlgta, on 05/25/2009, -7/+2Nothing says "thank you to those that died for our country" like spending money on grills, gas and food at a grocery store...
/s - Stevanoski, on 05/25/2009, -10/+5I wonder if BO will institue a Gay Memorial Day?
- Rikkochet, on 05/25/2009, -12/+5Not to be pedantic, but I think it'd be a glorious day when nobody remembers what it's for, since the implication is that we'll have moved beyond war for enough generations that the entire concept of war will be fuzzy in our psyche.
I can dream, anyways. - mrogi, on 05/25/2009, -17/+6The 11th Fact about Memorial Day:
90% of Americans dont give a rat's ass about military vets who die in combat unless they are family members. The govt prohibited us from seeing the flag draped coffins of troops returning home after getting killed in Iraq. Thanks to the Bush Administration those brave vets killed in combat remain nameless faceless abstract statistics. Out of sight and out of mind.
