Teaching Arabic and Propaganda in American Universities
washingtonpost.com — Learning Arabic should not include lessons in political propaganda. Yet the standard beginning text in Arabic classes at Harvard and other American universities throws you into a world of longing, abandonment and regret. And that's before you even touch the political issues. Most maps in the standard material do not include Israel.

The hypocrisy is stifling.- Tanktunker, on 07/08/2008, -0/+1Israel already was accused of memorycide, not for doing anything like this, but for teaching objective history, instead of pali-sympathetic drivel, in school.
Oh the humanity, the plight of the palis will be remembered only as what it was, rather than what would be easier for yellowcake and his cronies to defend and use to attack Israel.

- keltin, on 07/06/2008, -3/+5There is abslutely no reason why learning a foreign language must include an 'appreciation' of that culture, too.
In particular, the Arab-speakers that I work with and are 'quiet proslytizers' of Islam, have admitted to me that Dearborn, MI, was set up to be the seminal location for spreading Islam in Northern America. It's working for them and I've seen it up close and personal. Be concerned when the Happy Muslim who is happy and joking with you most of the time, then talks about converting the swinish Jews and Christians in the shadows.
No, not ALL are so inclined, but many are, that's why you hear No comments condemning what we consider extremist actions by other Muslims. What would be worse, though, is to falsely speak against those actions while supporting the Islamic Jihaddist agenda in the dark of the night. - yellowcakewalk, on 07/07/2008, -8/+2More Israeli propaganda from the Wash Po.
- chrisjj, on 07/07/2008, -5/+1Well I believe most maps in Israeli schools do not include Palestine. So, a good place to start if you are learning Arab culture and Arabic is of course to find out where Arab Palestine is (or was). In any language program, whether it be French, Spanish or Arabic, you expect your teacher to make the language come alive by placing it in context and teaching you something about the culture in addition to the grammar, syntax and spelling - I learned Latin, Spanish and French at high school and all the text books taught you about the countries, cultures, history and regions in which the languages were spoken. Just get over it Washington Post - your anti-Arab-culture racist nonsense is quite evident for all to see.
