- Sheepsterbaby, on 06/03/2009, -3/+93Why can't I be as happy as you?
Why can't something as little as a graph intrigue and excite me as much as it does for you? - inactive, on 06/03/2009, -8/+93What a fascinating map! It never ceases to amaze me how many new, cool ways there are of representing data that used to be displayed in boring tables. What does surprise me is that Iowa is the state with the most student debt. I would've assumed somewhere like NYC would be it, what with all the advertising and promotions of debt. Very eye-opening all around!
- OnionAvenger, on 06/03/2009, -2/+56The tuition for BYU is subsidized by the LDS church. The other universities in the state, in order to be competitive, have to lower their tuition to a comparable range.
- drifter, on 06/03/2009, -2/+42It's interesting that no ivy league college was in the top 10 most expensive schools.
- pissshivers, on 06/03/2009, -0/+29I was thinking they are broke.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+28Do aphostrophe's really say whether or not you can grammar?

- Jeepinator, on 06/03/2009, -3/+24Already down.
- pissshivers, on 06/03/2009, -2/+23What do students and this particular server have in common? ;)
- Darthyoshiboy, on 06/03/2009, -6/+27I'm sure it has nothing to do with the majority of those students not wasting their money on alcohol, or the fact that living within your means is a major tenet of the major religion.
If you have any proof of your implication I'd certainly like to see it. I know of at least 4 people that went to BYU, and left relatively debt free just by being smart with their money, no scholarships, no help from mom or dad, just honest hard work.
Oh, but digg me down, the bigoted answers are always so much more fun. - ctnp, on 06/03/2009, -0/+20No imagination!
- steveotron, on 06/03/2009, -3/+22State schools for the win. I went to a state university in California and was able to work while going to school and did not owe a cent when I graduated. I'll be starting at the University of Illinois this fall for my doctorate, and that's fully funded, so, once again, no debt. I cringe when I hear about so many students who go to expensive schools (mostly private) and end up with 50-60k of debt with just an undergraduate degree. Unless you graduated with an engineering or math degree and have a sweet job lined up, I can't really understand how it'd be worth all that money. Blah blah blah...quality of education and all that other *****; have fun paying off those student loans.
- zhaojon, on 06/03/2009, -0/+19I like how North Korea has a 100% crime rate.
- noahgelman, on 06/03/2009, -5/+24........yes, yes they do
- Dougman82, on 06/03/2009, -2/+20While what you say is true, the fact remains that tuition costs are subsidized a great deal by the Mormon church - whether you're a member or not. Being a Mormon, my average tuition cost during my 5 years at BYU was $1600/semester. That's literally a small fraction of the cost at most major universities. Had I been a non-member, it would have been closer to $3000/semester - still rather cheap.
Even though it's true that lifestyle and responsible decisions factor in to whether or not someone can graduate with little or no debt, the fact remains that it's also easier to graduate with little or no debt when you can pay most of your expenses (including tuition) with a part time job while you go to school. - felman87, on 06/03/2009, -0/+16Don't know why this was dugg down, it's 100% true.
- Alphabet, on 06/03/2009, -0/+16[citation needed]
- NMRgentleman, on 06/03/2009, -1/+17You might want to reconsider that. Going back on your word and destroying your credit is probably not the best way to start life post-graduation. Although I agree that the current system needs some help.
- ScottMcQueen, on 06/03/2009, -0/+14er, you went to Westminster didn't you? No other school in the state charges more than $5k a semester for residents, Westminster charges $23k.
- Dougman82, on 06/03/2009, -0/+14What exactly makes it worth every penny? I can't say I would ever pay that much to go to school, even if money was not a problem.
- Pinkertinkle, on 06/03/2009, -3/+17Anyone wanna pay 80k for my mass com degree?
- Clark, on 06/03/2009, -2/+15Iowa has zero reciprocity with any other state if I remember correctly

god that was a terrible joke. - admntlv, on 06/03/2009, -0/+11we're talking about REAL colleges here.
- batmanz, on 06/03/2009, -0/+11Ahhh digg. So peaceful...so tolerant. Except Mormons of course.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -1/+12its not more expensive, which is bad wording on their part - it's average debt from graduates.
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -0/+11wow I totally trust that those numbers are accurate!
- oboshoe, on 06/03/2009, -1/+12I guess they didn't teach about correlation and causation fail at your school.
- Richandler, on 06/03/2009, -3/+13Basically free market capitalism works in Utah. That's it.
- Tubal22, on 06/03/2009, -0/+10BYU charges LDS members approx 1/2 of what they charge non-lds members. Mainly because LDS members pay tithing to the church, which in turn puts it back into the university.
Last year, LDS tuition was about $3,840/year, not including books and housing.
Disclaimer, I'm not lds, and I didn't go to BYU. However, I am a University of Utah alumni.
http://yfacts.byu.edu/viewarticle.aspx?id=86 - michelsonmorley, on 06/03/2009, -0/+10Utah is weird. #1 for bankruptcies last in student loans..
- shibagarden, on 06/03/2009, -0/+10Well, the Coen brothers went there. But I can't say I'm wowed by any of their other alumni.
- DMCer, on 06/03/2009, -5/+14The Mormons always did take care of their own...
- BrettFromTibet, on 06/03/2009, -2/+11Why is the student debt in Utah so low? Is there some kind of conspiracy?
- AD35, on 06/03/2009, -1/+10What the heck is in Alaska that warrants 20k+ debt?
- jsdratm, on 06/03/2009, -0/+9for art? lol
- inactive, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8I can't believe people pay that much to go to Skidmore and Union! I'd rather go to UAlbany than either of those schools... Saratoga Springs is a nice town, but holy cowbell it's not THAT nice! Give me Hudson St. in Albany any day :-D
- NMRgentleman, on 06/03/2009, -1/+9A very well run separate country apparently? (Not a Utah resident, or Mormon, here.)
- BarrettAnderson, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8@Bluesky0010
Why would we try to hide the fact that tuition at BYU is subsidized? How is that a bad thing? - lbergerson, on 06/03/2009, -2/+10I just ripped an 8 second fart.
- chuckley54494, on 06/03/2009, -4/+12 they probably pay cash or get grants. poor people don't go to Harvard on their own student loans
- glendower, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8the point is bluesky, is that you seem to be singling out the mormons for something most religions (i dont know about all world religions so i cant say all) were guilty of at some point. Wasn't one of the catholic sects also involved during the california gay marrage fiasco?
I really dont care what you feel towards a particular religion (im atheist after all) but i do notice that a large portion of your comments for your profile are against one particular religion. Fine. I just want you to know where im coming from when i ask you the following:
Who the ***** peed in your coffee this morning? - ath1337, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8Prozac?
- BarrettAnderson, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8@Bluesky0010
I don't understand why subsidized education is a bad thing... why would we have to make BYU look great?
I'm mormon and have tons of non-mormon friends (even when I was a kid).
My boss is mormon but he had no clue I was mormon until well after I was hired.
Many schools cost less than BYU, so that still doesn't explain why BYU students have so little debt. Right now it's at about $2000 a semester.
Also -- "They also tend to like to say 'well, I'm not mormon....' as well."
What are you even talking about? Are you saying that you've read that and just assumed that the person writing was lying, and actually mormon? Do you have proof of this ever occuring? - ShiftyBizniss, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8maybe it's just my Canadian naivety, but where are the big, prestigious schools on this list? (Cornell, MIT, Yale etc...)
- ImYourRealDad, on 06/03/2009, -0/+8I'd imagine the job market in Utah isn't as vast as it would be in a more populated state.
