Stop Horse Slaughter, Video shows `inhumane' practices
thestar.com — Slaughter of horses in Canada "shockingly inhumane" and said the Canadian Food Inspection Agency does not properly police such slaughter for human consumption and it should be banned.

http://www.cbc.ca/national/blog/special_feature/no ... - Surferess, on 06/19/2008, -7/+14This is hard for me to watch.
- cdigioia, on 06/20/2008, -1/+5What was hard? I don't see any video in the article, just an allusion to one.
- louiebaur, on 06/19/2008, -5/+14Man this sucks
- lajaw, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4Why? Because it is horses? With the slaughter business out of the US, horse prices in the US have now fallen. There needs to be a place to discard of animals no longer usable. Just like a dog pound, there needs to be a place to get rid of those unwanted horses.
- westbay1, on 06/19/2008, -6/+12Sad sad sad, but thank you for bringing this to our attention!
- HuskyPuzzle, on 06/19/2008, -6/+9Gnarly. A great submission. People need to see this.
- davidhallstrom, on 06/19/2008, -4/+7How sad. Good luck with this.
- Michiko280, on 06/19/2008, -6/+6This is horrible... people really need to be exposed to this stuff that is happening behind closed doors. Hopefully some will be inspired to take action!
- manzplan, on 06/20/2008, -5/+8lucky for me, with dial up I cannot watch the video. Very sad.. BUT if you really want to know why many horses are killed.. look up PMU
Millions of women are taking estrogen supliments that come from mares kept pregant.. most of the foals are slaughtered as "by-products" of the industry.
PMU = Pregnant Mare Urine
(my wife is passionate against these things) - sherbertbones, on 06/20/2008, -4/+6They eat horses, don't they?
- Ortheos, on 06/20/2008, -2/+10Yes, so it's fine. And horse meat is tasty.
- svenM, on 06/20/2008, -2/+0No it isn't it has a weird kind of flavor
- ahac, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Depends on how it's prepared (like everything). There is a restaurant here where I live (in Europe) which has the best burgers around: horse burgers.
But if you just buy horse meat and try to make a steak or whatever... it probably won't be as good as other meat. - Ortheos, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I've tried Austrian specialty, horse fillets, it's very filling and yummy. However the meat is very dense, so you eat one steak and you're totally full.
But in the end kangaroo meat >>>>>>>>> all meats

- Wakkyweed, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2Horse meat is pretty good. However, I prefer to eat chimp meat. It tastes sort of like panda, but also has a hint of manatee.

I could give a ***** less what happens to the animals before they get to my plate. What, you want to be nice to them so they don't develop post-traumatic stress disorder for a few minutes before dying?
I think that's less "bandwagon" than it is "I don't care." Sorry if you think I'm part of the "digg bandwagon," that must be why all my other comments get dugg down.

- tristan55555, on 06/20/2008, -4/+39I am all for the humane slaughtering of animals when necessary but what makes horses any more special or noble than cows? Chickens? Pigs? or any other animal we slaughter for meat.
In India they probably think it is ***** strange we slaughter and kill cattle. This just seems like ignorant cultural imperialism to me.- RobSaint, on 06/20/2008, -9/+3The difference is most slaughtered pigs, chicken and cows were bred for consumption. Whereas these horses were unwanted pets and ex race horses who are in their prime.
These are intelligent animal who are aware of what is happening to them. All that is asked and required is a little respect and compassion when slaughtering them. When done properly there is no need for the horse to suffer unduly.- jebus123, on 06/20/2008, -0/+6Pigs are very intelligent too.
- RobSaint, on 06/20/2008, -9/+5The difference is Pigs, cattle and chickens were all bred for human consumption.
Many of these horses are people's unwanted pets and ex race horses still in their prime.
Horses are known to be intelligent and they surely know what is going on. It is our responsibility to ensure they are treated with compassion and respect when they are due to be slaughtered.
All it takes is a little extra planning and preparation to make the whole process less traumatic for both horse and slaughter house operator.
And in India I think you'll find not everyone believes cow are sacred and they are definitely not as ignorant as that statement you made. - lieunym, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8Do they need to be special to have attention paid to them? Cows, chicken, pigs, horses, etc. all deserve to be treated humanely.
- fugazied, on 06/20/2008, -3/+1Its one of the reasons why I am a vegetarian.
- RobSaint, on 06/20/2008, -9/+3The difference is most slaughtered pigs, chicken and cows were bred for consumption. Whereas these horses were unwanted pets and ex race horses who are in their prime.
- bluetytanium, on 06/20/2008, -12/+5Canada you used to be cool.
- MetalLizard, on 06/20/2008, -8/+10Sure this is wrong, but there are MUCH more important matters than the way 'some' horses might be being slaughtered. How about putting an end to preventable things like undernourishment, and horrible living conditions affecting millions of children? How about stopping things like this first?: http://img211.imageshack.us/img211/1946/darfur2tg8 ...
I'm not trying to take away how bad animals are being treated, but for humanity it should remain a trivial matter until the major problems are fixed first and foremost.- ConanTL, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5Because these two issues have (for the most part) nothing to do with each other. You could easily push any concern to the side with this sort of reasoning.
- csw1342, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5Because all living things should be treated equally and "humanely"?? we're not that great in the grand scheme of things.
- grantHamNeck, on 06/20/2008, -2/+1Starvation in darfur is linked with the food crisis, the food crisis is brougt on by meat production.
http://technorati.com/videos/youtube.com%2Fwatch%3 ... - roho76, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Exactly! I was thinking the same thing. This ***** is not important, man. I mean ***** horses, man. Those creatures are beneath me. Sometimes I just wanna cut a horses throat and watch it bleed. I just get off on that ***** man. Death and torture, ***** YEAH! Lets kill some *****. /sarcasm
Really I don't know why people just wanna kill living creatures (human or animal) in such a lustfull manner. - erydan, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1lets send the horses over there for them to eat.
- GraveWax, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1why should humans be regarded as any more privileged to life and health than any other animals? there is no great chain of being
- Protonz, on 06/21/2008, -1/+1Humans should just stop breeding. Stop breeding unwanted animals, stop breeding humans they can't afford.
Humans need to become responsible for themselves and their actions.

Animal murder makes me sad
but beer makes me happy.
and since i'm drinking beer, i'm all happy now.
So no animal murder videos right now.
maybe later though
when i don't have anymore beer/- MasterGrief, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I like this post. It's almost as if you wrote an impromptu poem.
- 4degrees, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1dont like animal murder; and you are drinking beer eh? anyone want to tell this person that yeast is an animal and was "murdered" to produce the oh so yummy beer? :-P
- clutcher, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1yeast isn't an animal, you're crazy
- Zacee, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8I used to work in a pig slaughter house here in the US and the same inhumane ***** happens there. Suppose to be a simple stun, hang, slice (inhumane as is) but with hundreds of unruly pigs, well, you can imagine. USDA is on sight but may as well be called "No-show" jobs.
- wihcar, on 06/20/2008, -5/+0I can not watch animal cruelty it is just awful.

- ConanTL, on 06/20/2008, -2/+10I see there are a lot of Cuddlytarians here (def. Cuddlytarian (noun) A person who can't stand the exploitation and slaughter of cuddly animals such as horses, cats, bunnies, but isn't able to apply the same empathy to an animal he/she finds 'ugly').
- CrazyChair, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I'm an awesometarian. If the animal is awesome, I don't condone the exploitation and slaughter of it. This goes for dogs, horses, dolphins and others. If it's not awesome, it can go on my plate.

- CrushThemTorg, on 06/20/2008, -7/+2They EAT horses? Gross. I've heard horse meat is awful.
- Rorsach, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Have you ever tasted it?
If not, try it and you'll find out why people eat it. - Virgule, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4I had caribou sausages last week and it was very excellent. I imagine a horse slice can't bad either.
By "slice" I mean "steak" - CrushThemTorg, on 06/22/2008, -0/+1Seriously, I've just heard horse meat isn't the tastiest meat. There's plenty of other sorts of crazy animal flesh I enjoy eating. Venison, buffalo, crocodile. All wonderful. I just thought horses were for racing, Jell-O and glue.
- Rorsach, on 06/20/2008, -0/+4Have you ever tasted it?
- proxypants, on 06/20/2008, -3/+11If you have never eaten horse meet, you are really missing out. My whole family loves it, in particular thinly sliced raw horse meet. Yum!
- Zounas, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3Raw horse meets who?
- antdude, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1How do you eat a horse meet?
- rmmcclay, on 06/20/2008, -1/+8Are you guys kidding? All this compassion...whilst the same horrendous treatment of the animals Americans like to eat goes on behind the slaughterhouse curtain.
- alanr19, on 06/20/2008, -5/+13***** you. Horse slaughter RULES!!!!!!!!!!
- PizzaCat, on 06/20/2008, -5/+1sif you eat horse!
- Iacobus42, on 06/20/2008, -1/+13So if you close all the horse slaughter houses in Canada, what are we going to do? I live next to a town in IL where one of the last horse slaughter houses in the US was before it recently shutdown. Most of the horse meat doesn't end up on your table, and there are reasons for slaughtering old or otherwise maimed horses.
Moreover, how is this any different then killing any other animal, as others have mentioned.
Plus, most of the "issues" with horse slaughter houses highlighted in the video are not issues with horse slaughter houses. Problems with transport or handling or unloading, none of that relates to the actual killing of the horse.
The only real issue they highlighted is that some horses may be improperly stunned before being killed. I would like to see data on that, but of course, I am sure there isn't any. There sure wasn't any in that article. - akey, on 06/20/2008, -8/+3Because it feels good... sign a petition to stop the horse slaughter:
http://www.experienceproject.com/petitions/Stop-Th ... - theculchie1, on 06/20/2008, -2/+6I ate horse meat in France thinking it was beef.
Its stringier but overall not a whole lot different. - fr3ddie, on 06/20/2008, -6/+3in soviet russia, horse eats you.
- Zounas, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Learn how to do it like it's supposed: http://uncyclopedia.org/wiki/Russian_reversal_(jok ...
- Sillywombat, on 06/20/2008, -2/+1hmmm; horse
- tealady, on 06/20/2008, -2/+2What's awful is not necessarily the killing of animals for meat, but the unecessary cruelty used, and this applies to all countries.
- peestandingup, on 06/20/2008, -1/+12These stories & the reaction from people always crack me up. Why?? Because I bet a good majority of you condemning this behavior eat all types of meat from other animals that are probably being slaughtered in similar ways (or worse). So what does that mean? If its a hog or a cow being treated like this its OK, but if its a horse, dolphin or whale its all of a sudden an outrage??
I'm not a vegetarian, BTW. But it's just ***** hypocritical.- Zounas, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Get in the trailer and we'll show how it's done...
- hapax, on 06/20/2008, -1/+3What about about pet goldfish? What about crabs in a pot? What about cockroaches and flies? What about tics and lice? They all deserve "humane treatment too"?
Most of us selectively apply humane treatment to different creatures, and we all use different categories. Some will protest the distinction between, but will swat a pesky mosquito without a second thought. Some people don't care about animals, and on the other end are the Jains.
Just like with meat-eating, where you have the whole spectrum from vegans to omnivores, I believe there is really no *right* principle. Different people have different beliefs in the matter, and it will be difficult for one group to sway another's belief. Though they do try.- peestandingup, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Lice, flies, etc aren't exactly conscious & sentient beings now are they. Horses, pigs, whales, cows etc are all mammals & quite capable of feeling/crying out in pain, thought processes, etc. Some are "smarter" than others, but they're all conscious.
- jnuffnuffnomnom, on 06/20/2008, -2/+0Horsegag!
- Treoinmypocket, on 06/20/2008, -4/+1Stupid Canadians eating horse meat....
- rushiku, on 06/20/2008, -0/+5This is terrible. Just last year 'they' got together and got the last horse meat processing plant in America (near Rockford, IL) shut down - gone was the last humane disposal unit for countless old, dying horses. Why? Because 'they' think horses are cute and should not be eaten.
Question: What is now happening to all those horses that have no place to go to be properly dispatched? Didn't think of that, did you? Did you save any funds from your ridiculous crusade to start up a horsie retirement community? No, I'm sure you didn't.
Being shot and left to die in the back forty is soooo much more humane than a quick death, isn't it, fools.
Here's a thought, instead of calling for the end of horse slaughter, why not work with the industry to bring their methods out of the dark ages? They do provide a necessary service, after all. I don't care for sewers, (they're unsightly and stinky) but you don't see me petitioning the government to get them banned.- Deadlysherpa, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Came in to post exactly this. Horses get old, they get sick, and most importantly, THEY DIE. If there's no disposal solution for them they will be euthanized by a vet and buried on the farm or shot by the farmer himself if he's not interested in spending the cash to put down his horse.
It's meat will rot in or on the ground, wasting away what could have been useful. The result will be "less humane" than many slaughtering facilities. Update the sytem, don't abolish it simply because you ride around on the beasts.

- ChrisWickenscom, on 06/20/2008, -1/+9Ok, this is *****.
I've been eating horse meat sandwiches since I was a kid because my family is of Dutch orientation (Get the Austin Powers jokes out of the way now.).
Just because a group of people think an animal shouldnt be killed for consumption means they're right? No ***** way.
If they get their way, then beef and every other type of meat needs to be banned for human consumption.
***** hippies.
(No this is not a joke, I actually love horse meat - It's salty and tastes good with mustard - again NOT a joke)- antdude, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1Can we eat humans?
- tungsai, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2Digg,
This is categorized in "Educational". This is an article designed to evoke outrage, not to educate. You might argue that people need to become more aware that this happens, and thus it is educational; but that's a stretch that fails.
I'm sick to death of articles that are designed for the sole purpose of evoking outrage. I no longer care.
Buried. - partrow, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1Why don't we eat horse meat in the U.S.? Seems strange that we are avoiding such a good source of meat. Slaughter them as humanely as cattle or any other livestock, but let's not put them on a pedestal like pets. Let's get them into our food chain instead of the pet food chain like they are now.
- Decneps, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1The video is embedded in a .ppt file linked to the page below. (~30mb)
http://www.defendhorsescanada.org/info.php?id=Ihsi ... - honeymonster, on 06/20/2008, -1/+4Yes, we should only eat ugly animals.
- edebolt, on 06/20/2008, -2/+2and stupid ones. Chickens are about as smart as cockroaches.
- edebolt, on 06/20/2008, -1/+1The world really needs to expand its menu choices. People in different countries eat Whale, Dolphin, Dog, Horse, Bats, Ostrich, Buffalo, frogs, insects. I want to be able to roll into a Burger King and order a double Dog with a hint of whale and extra crickets... Can't we have some more variety???
- h2d2, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1So you are saying we should all just move to Korea or China?
- edebolt, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1I live in Thailand now and while it's true some of those exotic foods exist but they are hard to find in most asian countries. You have to go seek out the specialty restaurants and they rarely advertise in english.
- h2d2, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1So you are saying we should all just move to Korea or China?
- dsa202, on 06/20/2008, -2/+1Yeah, it is inHUMANe, because we wouldn't treat a human like that. But horses are a whole 'nother ball game.
- krewl, on 06/20/2008, -1/+2Great, the cost of horse nipples is going to go through the roof now.
- thestranger, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1This is no surprise. Hell, the people who really care for animals don't even have the money to humanly euthanize (animal shelter often don't have enough money to put strays to sleep in a non painful way) the animals that we love and are not ok to eat (cats and dogs). So its no surprise that the less cute and domesticated ones are being treated 10 times worse.
