- TheVirus, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4Water is blue...ish.
- jmkiii, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3Einstein's dead!
- Utopian, on 02/06/2008, -0/+2Well, I don't know about Einstein, but I've just been on a skiing holiday in France and if you looked where there was a crack in the snow, there was definitely a blue tinge to it.
- inspecality, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3That's the snow fairy. She goes around France spraying blue food coloring beneath the snow.
Some say that if you listen really hard at night, you can hear her flying around with her little blue bottle. - LaerrusFish, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1I don't know about blue but I've definitely seen yellow snow
- inspecality, on 02/06/2008, -0/+3That's the snow fairy. She goes around France spraying blue food coloring beneath the snow.
- davidrools, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1you ever seen a non-black and white SEM image, dumbfart?
- LaerrusFish, on 02/06/2008, -3/+1Of Course it is

"13371" -> "leetl" - shadeOfGrey, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1This is so incredibly old.
Good work uptwolait.
- GrammarNazi3000, on 02/06/2008, -2/+11I love the 'little' scaling number they used.
- DurtyJ, on 02/06/2008, -1/+12I like. Although it looks like stamped playdough - which would be even more amazing.

- domness, on 02/06/2008, -0/+13That's pretty amazing. I know it's probably real (however colorized like people have said further up), but it just looks so fake! I'm not saying it is fake though.
The kind of things that you see on this earth.. brilliant. :) - Pneub, on 02/06/2008, -0/+6Looks like some sort of colony on an alien planet...
- RhodesSkolar, on 02/06/2008, -2/+9Was this done on a scanning electron microscope? It is marvelous.
- kokodhem, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure an SEM would melt it... probably just a really good scope.
(we use an SEM at work, and the setup process would never work with ice)
- kokodhem, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1I'm pretty sure an SEM would melt it... probably just a really good scope.

- Xerces, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1and it's down
- cr42yr1ch, on 02/06/2008, -0/+4Scanning electron microscope image colourised - standard practice for highlighting the edges of objects. All SEMs cannot detect backscattered/emitted electron energy, so sees no "colour information". All SEMs are therefore monochrome. The challenge to produce this image is that the sample must first be coated with metal via "sputter deposition", without damaging or melting the snowflakes in the process!
- muki, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Um, ouch. Ya'll made my head hurt with that.
- bsdboy, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1Finally find a server that can get the image, now we just need one that can host it. ;-)
- rpi22, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1i believe they just upped the bandwidth for the original link
- bsdboy, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Well you better have them up it again... it isn't serving from here.
- GawtMilk, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Wait, WIKIPEDIA is down for you?
Do you live in Egypt by any chance?

- adequateftw, on 02/06/2008, -2/+3This is probably the very definition of the word awesome.
- recruz, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1looks like a level or a scene from final fantasy
- manirock, on 02/06/2008, -1/+1The link isn't loading the pic. Anyone got a mirror?
- a3r0, on 02/06/2008, -2/+4Good job linking to a 5.5mb file. And I doubt that you took this yourself -- unless you work for the USDA, where it really did come from

- CrazedLeper, on 02/06/2008, -14/+4Wow. Evolution is amazing...even though it doesn't exist.
- ApokalypseNow, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1We have lots of evidence for evolution. What evidence do you have for your "theories"? And I use the word "theory" in the loosest possible sense here, especially when applied to the baseless assertions that you, a self-professed conspiracy "theorist", usually make.
- CrazedLeper, on 02/07/2008, -1/+1Evolution has no beginning. It,therefore, is piggy-backing on some other "theory" which it requires to give it context. You have been fed the lie for a purpose. You are being led captive but you agree because you don't know where you're being taken.
- ApokalypseNow, on 02/07/2008, -0/+2Evolution is simply for how life changes. It says nothing about the beginnings. For the beginnings, look up abiogenesis or similar topics.
I follow the evidence. The evidence led towards the creation of the modern theory of evolution.

- taffyhealscrowd, on 02/06/2008, -5/+1It looks like the interior of superman's fortress of solitude. I strongly dislike superman.
- thinktrunk, on 02/06/2008, -2/+3amazing after it finally loaded... I feel sorry for whoever is footing the bill for bandwidth. 5602.05 KB Image x 200,000 diggers / 1024 = 508G.
- kendawg, on 02/06/2008, -0/+45602.05 KB * 200,000 = 1068.5 GB OUCH!
but really.....will 200,000 people try to open it? probably more like 5,000.- matthewf01, on 02/06/2008, -1/+2195,000 came in to just comment without clicking the link

- jerbaker, on 02/06/2008, -5/+4I can't think of a worse candidate for using a PNG image. No wonder it loads so slowly. Photographs are NEVER better as PNG. Photographs are nearly always better as JPG. GIF and PNG are best-suited for line and cartoon-type drawings.
- sremick, on 02/06/2008, -2/+8Umm, no. JPG=lossy, PNG=lossless.
I can tell the difference between a JPG and a PNG photograph just with my own eyes. The lossy compression artifacts are obvious. Yes, PNG is bigger, but that data is going somewhere.- jerbaker, on 02/06/2008, -4/+1You do know that you can adjust the compression of JPGs, right? You cannot produce a photograph where a smaller JPG does not look the same as the 24-bit PNG. Period.
- shaitanx, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3If you would have seen the picture, you would understand why it had to be a PNG.

- faizal5k, on 02/06/2008, -1/+3ahhhh...man, loaded too slow...here's a mirror for those who want it (.png file):
http://fizzel89.com/images/digg/Snow_crystals.png - cbeach, on 02/06/2008, -5/+10"Amazing Photo!!" .. "i took this photo myself"
So modesty is not one of your strong points then.. - Prototek, on 02/06/2008, -3/+26Direct linking to a 5.2 MB image on Wikipedia from Digg is a irresponsible and wasteful. Use a hosting site made for images.
- Amyfers, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Stunning :)
- thesoprano, on 02/06/2008, -4/+1Is anyone else's vision 'warbling' when they look at this?
- peregrine, on 02/06/2008, -3/+1Another Mirror
http://picasaweb.google.com/Stiebs.81/Digg/photo#5 ... - sniffer, on 02/06/2008, -2/+4WOW!
I've only realized now that the image was 5.5Mbs!
DAMM! It loaded fast! It took what? 5 secs? GREAT!
Anyway, that's a fantastic shot. I once tried to take one for myself, but no matter what i made, when i "showered" the sample withe the "metal filling"(to highlight the hedges) it ended up ruining all my sample :( Tried almost a duzen times, before i burned my microscope time.
Great work. That's my new wallpaper!
Thanks - moletimer, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1What happens if the snow melts?
- adooga, on 02/06/2008, -0/+1Water all over your keyboard.

- DiggerUpper, on 02/06/2008, -7/+3Evolution is the worst theory anybody made up. (Anyone who diggs me down is a fag.)
- ncdave101, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4"(Anyone who diggs me down is a fag.)"
Uhm, no. If you get dugg down it's because people disliked your comment. - adooga, on 02/07/2008, -0/+1Well I guess I'm a fag then. And you're a tard.
- ncdave101, on 02/06/2008, -1/+4"(Anyone who diggs me down is a fag.)"
