It's would be absolutely detrimental to these kids psyche if they were able to respond to stupid things like hot weather by removing a jacket of unbuttoning their shirt. I'm from the US and I attended a fundamentalist baptist school from 13 to 18 (at which time I was a believer) and this might have had something to do with my kneejerk reaction to the religious element of the story. My school had even more rediculous rules, such as an instant week of detention for ANY contact between male and female students. Two classmates of mine were threatened with suspension for high-fiveing each other. This was also the school that made regional headlines for expelling a group of 10-12 yr old girls for "witchcraft" after they formed a "witches club". This was around the time the Harry Potter books started coming out.

- 0tis, on 06/24/2009, -1/+8Yes. I went to a Church of England school, and they're not like religious schools in the US. They hold a religious assembly, from which pupils can be exempted with parental permission (given where the family practices a different religion) and that's about it.
The criteria of the Church are not used to select who is eligible to attend or to make the rules - compare with a recent case in which a religious school in the US expelled two girls for being gay.
You have to understand that we don't have separation of Church and State in the UK, but we also don't have this ridiculous fundamentalist thing that the US has - the Church has its say and I honestly feel that this is one of the reasons it doesn't feel the need to find things to yell about.
That said, I'm an atheist and I don't think the Church should be contributing to government on principle; or at the very least, that religions other than Christianity should get a say. - monkeywithagun, on 06/24/2009, -0/+7I just finished there last month (its sixth form college as well)

- muleskinner, on 06/24/2009, -0/+4When I was in high school we had similar PDA rules, with detention or eventual suspension as penalties. No kissing, no hugging, and no hand holding on school grounds. Needless to say, most of us became very familiar with the detention room.
On an interesting side note, my senior year to students were caught ***** each other on the floor of the mens bathroom...their punishment was the same as any other PDA "offense"... In Victorian times the age of consent was about 12, children were caned for very minor misbehaviour, and if you were poor rather than getting unemployment benefits you'd have to go and live in the workhouse.
