- AmyVernon, on 11/23/2008, -1/+60Nice to see such academic accomlishment come out of the program for a change...
- aerobroken, on 11/23/2008, -1/+53Looks like he worked his butt off to get it, well earned. Nice Share...
- BeShirtHappy, on 11/23/2008, -1/+46Impressive. Good for him!
- Wilarseny, on 11/23/2008, -2/+40You, sir, are a gentlemen and a scholar.
- elo91, on 11/23/2008, -1/+31i bet he's really popular with the ladies...imagine introducing yourself and honestly being able to say "well, I either want to become a professional football player or a doctor, but I haven't decided yet."
- ramenite, on 11/23/2008, -1/+23He'll go into the NFL after he gets his degree from Oxford.
"His planned course of study would be a one-year master’s degree in medical anthropology; he plans to become a doctor and open a clinic to help needy people in the Bahamas. Rolle has said that if he wins the award, he will make a decision with his family when things settle down. "
An NFL salary would do wonders for funding something like that. It would also give him a huge leg up on fund raising, from the notoriety of being an NFL player. - angeladtao, on 11/23/2008, -1/+20America's youth at its best!
- Guitarist970, on 11/23/2008, -1/+17One of the best stories in all of college sports, he can serve as an inspiration for all student athletes.
- JohnGotty, on 11/23/2008, -1/+16Very impressive for the young fella.
- DirtyBinLV, on 11/23/2008, -2/+16My favorite part is that his coach encouraged him to miss a game to attend the final interview. I'm not sure why the interview couldn't have been done by phone or video conference before or after the game, but I guess those Rhodes guys keep it old school.
- d2002, on 11/23/2008, -2/+16I've always been a big fan of Bill Bradley. Good luck Myron and make us proud!
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -0/+14***** off *****
- Vulphaestion, on 11/23/2008, -0/+13Bill Clinton.
Duh. - wmute, on 11/23/2008, -1/+13The typical new stories out of NCAA football and basketball are either recruiting controversies, gifts from agents, free passes with grades and other negative things. It's refreshing to hear about the Good Guys in college sports, especially from someone playing for Florida State...
- markus7353, on 11/23/2008, -1/+12What a great story...I can't help but be ecstatic when I hear of a great student athlete who strives to work more that just his/her sport
- lsatkins, on 11/23/2008, -1/+11Congrats Myron! Our section went nuts last night at the game when we saw him coming out of the tunnel. Someone had a radio with them and announced he won the award.
- inigomntoya, on 11/23/2008, -0/+10Oh. I'm sorry. Okay. I'm sorry. My mistake. ...That was a woman I was talking to. She has a very low voice. Probably a smoker.
- jobobshishkabob, on 11/23/2008, -0/+10Even with all those things, yes he was the best we've had (in 96% of our lifetimes, as yankpats said). That's the sad part...
And Bush went to Yale because of his name, not because of his intelligence. - chris54950, on 11/23/2008, -1/+9Glad to see an athlete who knows how to use his brain as well.
- Aisha417, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8Finally an positive role model. Congrats to him and hopefully the next to come
- Klak, on 11/23/2008, -1/+8why is everyone so shocked when a football player isnt a bonehead? oh yeah, overwhelming evidence to the contrary
- HanSolo69, on 11/23/2008, -0/+6accomplishment*
- VengefulSquid, on 11/23/2008, -2/+7Talk about being a Renaissance man.
- tbenathan, on 11/23/2008, -0/+5Rolle's role model is Dr. Ben Carson, chair of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins and a winner of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
That's a much better role model than Rodney Harrison or Roy Williams. - maxer64, on 11/23/2008, -2/+7NAFTA and Defense of Marriage act disagrees with your assessment.
- psteve4, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4Football may just be a means to an end for him. I don't think it would be dumb for him to go after something he has worked to achieved and then set up the clinic he always dreamed of opening for the underprivileged. Not every athlete loves the sport they play, they just use their ability to get what they really want.
- StrikerObi, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4Myron Rolle is a Rhodes Scholar and Tim Tebow was home schooled. Which one of them is a real STUDENT athlete?
- azureskies88, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4Yes, by proving how it is such a rare phenomenon, they have successfully proven that football players are not typically "brainless." Not. However, just because the vast, vast majority is comprised of morons does not mean that there are no exceptions - and I wholeheartedly applaud these rare exceptions who are able to excel in both areas.
It's a news article - there is no moral. The point of the article is to rightly extol this kid's accomplishments. However, for every one like him, there are a thousand more who will neglect their studies, often being excused from attending class. And for every one who is able to make a lucrative career out of playing around with a pigskin, a thousand more are left without adequate educations (although it is questionable whether or not they could attain the education in the first place, due to admissions loopholes for athletes). The whole system is ***** up. - daskro, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4What's interesting is the Rhodes Scholarship was created by the Industrialist and philanthropist Cecil Rhodes. Cecil's name was also used in the naming of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. It was named after him for his efforts in turning the bush country into one of Africa's most productive and bountiful agricultural centers (back in the 70s and 80s, not so much now thank to Mugabe) but at the cost of creating a class system that later bore Apartheid. There is a hint of humorous irony in giving a scholarship named after a man involved so greatly in the subjugation of African natives to a descendant of African slaves whose success is due in large part to his physical ability to move things around.
- SkinnyPuppy, on 11/23/2008, -1/+5Go away! I think that is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
- metaliq, on 11/23/2008, -0/+4The sad truth as that the majority of student athletes couldn't give a damn about academics-- they want a degree to get a job or to be drafted and play professionally.
Of course there are those that are gifted in academics and athletics, but they are a minority.
But congrats to Rolle. - andrew1338, on 11/23/2008, -1/+5what's this? An intelligent football player? Inconceivable!!
- Aliwalla, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3One of the major sections in the rhodes scholarship application is about leadership in sports. Rhodes specifically put it in there so whomever got the award would be what he considered a balanced human being.
- Scottievm, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Bill Clinton. Do I win a cookie?
- inactive, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4One year?
- HookmasterCH47, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4Way to go Rolle!
- mecole21, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4Love hearing about college sports players doing real work in academics... he'd be dumb not to go to the NFL..
- lukeag10, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Seriously, Rolle has probably achieved more in his short lifetime than you can ever hope to achieve. How one person has the dedication to be so incredibly talented in academics and athletics is amazing. Celebrate his accomplishments as a fine human being instead of trying to degrade him with stupid stereotypes. That's just ridiculous.
- staplemaniac, on 11/23/2008, -0/+3Have you seen my Nobel prize around here? I seem to have misplaced it...
- ThugThrasher, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3How you could be at FSU and NOT have heard of Myron Rolle over the past 3 years is beyond me. Even BEFORE he won the Rhodes Scholarship, he was considered one of the better ambassadors of our University with everything he's done off the field (research, working with children, graduating early with honors, etc.).
Really, I can't even get on Blackboard more than 3 or 4 times without seeing his picture.
And it's been in the democrat and the fsview and on the local news stations.
Not sure WHERE you get your news, but if it's only the NYT, then yes, that's where you'll have to get your local news, but if you pay attention to local news sources then you would probably have already seen news on Rolle. - lordtyros, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4Well ***** him and ***** you too
- fsu120, on 11/24/2008, -0/+3Your joking right! I live here in Tallahassee and everybody has been talking about this for months. They even have been talking about this on major national news programs.
- metaliq, on 11/23/2008, -1/+4Completely different fields. Bad idea.
- metaliq, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2I suppose so.
And maybe I'm bitter about their attitudes because I have had to pay my own way through it all. :) - Elude107, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2I'd hope so, his theorem is the *****.
- bpoteat, on 11/24/2008, -0/+2"The sad truth as that the majority of student athletes couldn't give a damn about academics-- they want a degree to get a job."
That pretty much sums up most people who go to college on mom & dad's money, no? - mclaincausey, on 11/23/2008, -0/+2Congratulations sir,
you are in even a more elite class in academics than you are in athletics. - doobiebrother, on 11/23/2008, -1/+3Respect
- JakePM, on 12/04/2008, -0/+2it's great to see this type of emphasis put on education. NCAA athletes are students first.
- Mujokan, on 11/25/2008, -0/+2Naw, interviews are one of the most important parts of the process.
