- Unstablesob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+57Just hit the power button, any recent system will do a proper shutdown that way.
- ostracize, on 10/12/2007, -5/+54I can't stand the "Apply" *then* "OK" camp.
- ohsin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+44was there any need of VIDEO......for this
- afzilla, on 10/12/2007, -1/+42shutdown -s -t 0
- refujee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28Unless you're on a laptop...
- revvolutions, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23thats worthy of a prank, even though i just hit the power button myself.
place it on your friends desktop. name it "shemales vid." see if they take the bait. - Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]
No args Display this message (same as -?)
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)
It's good for restarting (shutdown -r -t ), but I prefer just to hit the power button to shutdown my computer. Does the same thing as the video above on any modern computer. - vinylking, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20It's fun to name it as Internet Explorer and put the IE icon on it, to ***** with your friends!
- nicnic77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23Makes more sense than putting the "Shut Down" button on the "Start" menu.
- orgazmo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19Putting it on the quick launch bar has to be the "bestest idea evar!"
- nicnic77, on 10/12/2007, -11/+29Here's another method I use ALL the time.
1) Reach round back of beige box.
2) Yank on the power cable.
So much quicker than the eons XP takes to shut itself down.
This tips appears even easier than this, so I will try it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17How is this quick and safe? I'll accidentally click it too much.
- misteral, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21@elnerdo If by eons, you mean "about eight seconds" then you are right.
I don't know what you're talking about - my XP workstation takes a good 3 minutes to shutdown. When I shutdown/restart before going home I have to stay and watch 'till its done because many times I've just left and found it still sitting there the following morning asking if I want to shut down explorer because it's hung - REBELinBLUE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Seriously, did that really need to be in video form?
- moosethumbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15A Microsoft rep told me that there's a bug in Windows Server 2003 where it randomly won't process changes if you just hit "OK." Ever since I've been an "Apply" then "OK" guy myself.
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Oh man, you must be t3h l33t or something. I wish I could be as cool as you, and run l1n|_|x.
- Pther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Abstract: Windows has a CLI command called 'shutdown', which allows you to shut down your computer.
Pretty convenient for use in scripts. It also allows you to shutdown other computers in the network; or shutdown/reboot your computer after a specified time. - osearth, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I don't think any of us had a problem shutting down the PC? Let alone need it on the quick launch. Then again i only shutdown when I install something that wants me to.
Here is how I shutdown a PC and it works on all versions of windows
Win-Key > U > U
to reboot use
Win-Key > U > R - jacobo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11metacafe pays for each click in ads , that's the reason
- redDC143C, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I admin computers at a highschool.
I'll bet anyone $50 I find tons of these shortcuts in the Startup Folder. Thanks! - stringmun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8How about putting the icon in the Startup folder instead....haha
- Tazmaster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If you are thinking you might accidentally hit the icon in your quick launch bar, make a folder and put the shortcuts for shutdown and restart in there. Then, put the folder in the quick launch bar. The folder icon can be changed just like the shortcuts were.
This way, if you accidentally hit the icon it will only open a folder instead of actually shutting down or restarting your PC.
I assume most of you already thought of this, but I thought I would recommend it anyway just in case someone hadn't thought of it yet. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9"I don't know what you're talking about - my XP workstation takes a good 3 minutes to shutdown."
Wow, there's probably some driver/hardware issue in that case, with Windows waiting for your hardware to respond before it can go ahead. Or unresponsive applications. I haven't installed Windows XP in 4 years (and you can then imagine about the cruft and applications installed) and it usually still shuts down in less than 10 seconds. It should never really take up to 1 minute or so.
Despite me not having problems, I'd still like to see some sort of application that can profile these problems though. There's BootVis for Windows boot procedure profiling and optimization, but how about the reverse? It would be useful for people in your situation. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7http://hacks.oreilly.com/pub/h/1063?page=last&x-maxdepth=0
- LLXerxes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10What was the name of the targeted file? I couldn't read it.
Thank you. - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12The "get out more" is funny. You never hear "you need to get in more" about people going on about minor things like "public breastfeeding is wrong, find a bathroom!" and so on. But as soon as it's minor computer details, you'll have your trolls instantly pulling up lame, worn remarks like these.
- kamot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hibernate
http://computerkid.blogspot.com/2005/08/hibernate-shortcut-for-xp.html - nroose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6That U, U thing works well only if you don't have something else in the start menu that has U for a shortcut.
- kludwig, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If your PC takes a long time to shut down, it may be deleting the pagefile. If you have a lot of memory, this can take some time. Here is a link to a Technet article about it.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/archive/community/columns/tipsfortechs/dlpgfile.mspx?mfr=true - drfloyd5, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@ostracize - fully agree. It's as bad as double-clicking links.
I tell people "Ok, implies Apply" and they look at me like uhh? ARRRGG. - mathsheep, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It would be nice if there was a similar command to hibernate the computer, because I hibernate far more often than I shut down and I always get REALLY annoyed to click on the shutdown icon, then press shift, then click the little hibernate icon that appears...
- Doghound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@crumbelievable & Tazmaster
Yes, it does say '-5', but that is a mistake. -5 does not do anything.
If you load up your command prompt and type in 'shutdown -5' you'll get the same help screen that I posted above. - Tazmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, they definitely put "-5' in the video. Can anyone explain why? Was it just a mistake or does -5 actually mean something?
Shutdown -s -t 0 works perfectly. - striker1211, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Maybe make it so they cant add ***** to the startup folder? You WOULD be the type to be an admin at a high school...
- Crazyiodudo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The real fun with this hack is assigning it icons of programs that people use everyday. Ex. IE, Mozilla, Microsoft Office.
- Combat247, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@techlinks
same, hibernate is so much quicker to reboot and shutdown, but i restart the pc every 3 days or so to stop performance drop.
anyone know a command like this for hibernate? - z0iid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3shutdown -s -f -t 0
(you can also replace the -s with -r if you want a quick reboot.)
the -f is actually safe - unless you have crap open that you forgot to save.
you can also do a taskkill /f /t winlogon.exe
It will bluescreen...and it probably isn't good for your computer, but...it works.
oh...and the obligatory....**old**...."been using this for **ages** - z0iid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yes it does. You have to do Win (release) U, U.
Otherwise, it looks like sending a command Win+U+U. - Smeed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This would be a good prank.... Rename the icon Internet Explorer and change the icon, do this at a public computer :P
- anglachel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3you can have a whole lot more fun with taskkill and the csrss.exe process.
- wisam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4nusblog, The reason you keep posting the fullscreen video of any video that appears on the frontpage is beyond my understanding. You keep getting dugg down. Don't you thing there's a reason for that?
- RunnyBabbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I can never get this working over my LAN - can you explain this a little more?
I always stream videos from my living room desktop late at night and can't bring myself to get out of bed to go turn it off. A million free internets to whoever can help! - techlinks, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I know on my laptop I just change the "When I press the power button" to Hibernate.
- chrono13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In Linux:
Alt+SysReq+S (syncs all file systems)
Alt+SysReq+U (unmounts all Filesystems, remounting them as read-only)
Alt+SysReq+B (reboots the system instantly, startup is normal however).
This can take a Linux box down in about two to three seconds, depending on how fast of a typist you are. You can also create a script to do the same thing.
Fastest way to shut down or reboot Linux. - dwalls32, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If you want to shut down quickly, just press your power button once on the outside of your box. Send a shutdown command
- PirateFSM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@dink353
God bless exchange shutdown scripts. It's because of those exchange services running. There are articles around that show you how to shut services, the major speed killers, down manually (Windows is polite :-) I guess) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2(comment was cut)
it's freeware and you can get it here
http://www.proffs.nu/brutus.htm - Jugalator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2One more thing -- if your hard drive makes several pauses during the shutdown procedure, that's also a sign something is up. It should really never make that, and shut down almost immediately after the drive stops if your running applications and hardware drivers are responsive.
- carpeclunes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sorry, posted in wrong place. But digg me up for a change!
- pureliquidhw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@doghound
