- isiz, on 09/10/2008, -1/+75One time I smoked salvia and thought my face was a door handle.
- AussieCynic, on 09/09/2008, -1/+67If they can tax it to the hilt they will leave it be... otherwise it will get banned and made illegal...
- LucasVB, on 09/10/2008, -3/+51For ***** sake, laws were supposed to be used on important things. Let people smokeeatinhaleinject whatever they want. They're doing so deliberately.
- Visarga, on 09/10/2008, -0/+43Salvia has zero prospects of being a successful party drug. A hammer kick to the head will also alter your state of consciousness, yet we don't ban hammers. Salvia is not so far off. It is weird, different yet not fun in any degree. The guys who can't stop giggling when they're high? They are shocked ***** and this is the only way they can react.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -1/+41Sounds like now's the time to get a plant and start growing it. It's not a difficult plant to grow, however it doesn't set seed so you need to grow it from clones. Supposedly it makes a decent houseplant.
I never really bothered because I just don't enjoy it. The fact that they're banning this without any evidence of harm caused just goes to show that the drug laws are all about social control, not about controlling any "danger" caused by them. - adt41287, on 09/10/2008, -0/+37one time i smoke salvia and i thought i was fused to the couch, then it wrapped around my head and i got a 3rd person view of myself and the couch. we looked like a flower.
- kplo, on 04/01/2009, -3/+36i've tried that before and i really don't understand the big deal. very little happened. i guess everyone is different.
- XtheXlanternX, on 09/10/2008, -0/+31I bought some at a local head shop and the first time I smoked it I felt nothing at all, not even a body buzz or anything. I was kind of in disbelief.. I mean, all these people couldn't be lying, could they? Since the local head shop is kind of shady, I decided I would order some salvia off an internet site. Oh. My. God. It was probably the craziest 3-5 minutes of my life. I took one hit of it and before I pulled the pipe away from my mouth I was gone. I remember I thought I was making out with the little sister from Charlie Brown and that we were living inside a giant hamburger. My friends were watching me and they said for awhile I was licking this blanket and staring at the wall. Its pretty fun, but I had a good experience. I would consider doing it again, but its not really high on my priority list. Its cool, but its semi-uncontrollable and you don't realize that you're still a real person in the real world while you're doing it. Like I said, its cool but I'd rather just smoke weed. Legalize pot please.
- dmallymally, on 09/10/2008, -1/+32Damn it, now people are looking at me for laughing in the library
- dazparkour, on 09/10/2008, -1/+31The article subtext is almost misleading: It's already illegal in a few states, including Florida from memory, but I don't care - I'm not American. It's also illegal in Australia.
From a purely research perspective, it's quite sad. Almost EVERY hallucinogen has an active compound in the form of an Alkaloid, so when Salvia appeared decades ago and it tested negative for Alkaloid content, it was discarded.
From a purely research perspective, salvia is interesting because it's active compound is not an alkaloid. If you were to find something with a chemical structure similar to LSD, it would be illegal because of the analogue law that says if it is enough like an existing illegal drug, it becomes illegal. Salvia doesn't fall into this perspective.
Lab tests found if you get rats addicted on cocaine then gave them salvia, they gave up the cocaine.
Kids on youtube, screw them. If it is unavoidable, make it age restricted. Do not ban it because of kids. - burjzyntski, on 09/10/2008, -0/+25salvia definitely is *not* a party drug. it is something to be done in a quiet, comfortable, darker room...and even then it still isn't exactly "fun".
it has been used by the mexican shamans for spiritual purposes (and as "incense") for a long-ass time. it is not designed to give you a buzz, but i agree with someone else's post; the universe will bitch-slap you. - dazparkour, on 09/10/2008, -4/+27If no one has the right to tell anyone they can't use it - why the hell are you saying good riddance? (not the A)
- getrealnow, on 09/10/2008, -1/+23I dislike how the Government can make choices for me on what i want to take. If I want to take Salvia I should be able to, same with Marijuana, Psilocybe Cubensis, and LSD.
More information about Salvia..http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia_basics. ... - adt41287, on 09/10/2008, -0/+20scary experience with salvia. will never do it again. make sure you have a sober babysitter.
- TheRedNewt, on 09/10/2008, -1/+20I think he meant that pot smokers would be calling for marijuana's legalization, citing this as precedent for legalizing drugs.
- SeekaF, on 09/10/2008, -3/+18shh! if it gets any amount of press it's going to be DEA raid time...
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -2/+17Lawmakers: "Holy *****, do you mean to tell me there's a natural plant out there that when smoked, makes people see weird things for a few minutes? How have we not made this illegal yet?! I don't *care* if it's non-habit forming and safe, WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN?!"
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -3/+18Oh, ya, cause banning drugs really works! LOL!!!!! So some 17 year old ***** killed himself cause he realized god, as we know him, doesn't exist (something a drug trip teaches you quickly and which many fail to mention when citing that article), so you'll let those few ***** ruin it for everyone? Do your research before you take a powerful substance.
Tons of people grow pot, it's so easy to get, in the park, at a bar, on the internet.
Even LSD, which, if you really know wtf you are doing requires major lab equipment to make, can be found in large quantities, all over the country at affordable prices.
"The effects dissipated after five minutes." HAHAHAHA!!!!! I KNOW you will not believe me but those five minutes can seem like 3 hours.
Banning will do nothing. Education may help people from acting stupid. Do your research. Also, few find Salvia enjoyable, just because something is the most powerful "anything" doesn't mean it's fun, it can be ***** scary and get out of control. - racco, on 09/10/2008, -0/+15a short and harsh hit. most people try it because they cant get hold of any "proper" smoke, thinking it will be the same.
Then it slaps them round the face and makes them really wish they were home in their mothers arms.
Not my cup of tea, but making it illegal is just a waist of time and money. Weed is illegal and look how popular that is - getrealnow, on 09/10/2008, -1/+16People that post videos abusing Salvia make users that smoke it and respect it look bad.
Also when you smoke you, you really have to hold it in for about 20+ seconds out, so taking a huge hit doesn't really help unless you do it 2 or more times in a row.
more information about it http://www.erowid.org/plants/salvia/salvia_basics. ... - Bluemandrew, on 09/10/2008, -0/+14dynelol- How about you don't use it, and stop trying to make laws to restrict other people's personal choices? Also how about some sources that it can make you "permanently retarded"? Dick
- GhandicapXRS, on 09/10/2008, -0/+13My first time smoking it, I also fused with my couch, and then the counch and I turned into a train. I was essentially the trains "soul" and we roamed the country side picking up friends and family to go on a magic adventure. It was awesome.
- OfNumbers, on 09/10/2008, -3/+16I promise anyone that takes a solid rip of Purple Sticky brand 40+ through a small water pipe will understand what the big deal is.
- dazparkour, on 09/10/2008, -1/+14*****. Again. Driving? On Salvia. There are already laws against driving intoxicated anyway - no one needs a Salvia specific law.
It's ***** to say that someone can't do something in their own home, doing no harm to anyone else, because some ***** might do it driving. - JesperL, on 09/10/2008, -0/+13Wait what
I'm pretty sure babysitter is a term used to refer to a friend who remains sober while you get high so in case you start freaking the ***** out he'll be there to make sure you don't skin your cat with your teeth or something.
Or I could be wrong. Whatever floats your handjobs. - digitalpencil, on 09/10/2008, -0/+12you have to smoke it through a bong.. i hit 3 bongs of extract in a row on a rip-through, tried to pour coke in my mouth because of bong-breath, poured it out of the side of my mouth, then couldn't stand up-right because my head felt like it was filled with lead at which point I started tripping balls.. i thought my head was stitched to the pillow, which was stiched to the bed, which was stitched to the floor and the cupboard. I then thought i was in a tv-show, went upstairs despite being on the second floor of a two-story house and could barely move around for a good 20 mins (which felt like an hour).
Suffice to say, it's ***** hilarious but you can't smoke it as a joint.. something to do with the temperature at which it works most effectively but definitely worth a whirl for my pot-smoking brethren!
disclaimer: i also had a mate who hit a bong and then immediately after, apologised to everyone and left the room. when we went and found him, he said that in that instant, he had no idea who anyone was and how he'd got there so decided to go for a trundle.. lol (he was fine 5 mins later, it doesn't last long at all)
So like all these things (shrooms etc), take it in the company of good friends, with a minder and be aware of the possible reactions.. that way you're set for a good time. - falseflagUSA, on 09/10/2008, -0/+12I'm a sacred medicine enthusiast, but I must warn anyone wanting to try salvia - it's not what you think. I really wanted to like it. I even grow it (it's extremely hard to propagate). But the stuff is just a) too strange b) too hard to get off on. Chewing the leaves (the traditional way) only gives you a mild buzz. Smoking does virtually nothing, unless you use a gravity bong and a REALLY HOT flame. Now, if you use a concentrated extract, you can shoot yourself to the stratosphere for a trip shorter than DMT. But again, it's just strange and not that pleasurable.
San Pedro is also legal. It's more work, but much better rewards than savlia. - Murdats, on 09/10/2008, -1/+12ever drink caffeine, alcohol, tea or any number of common foodstuffs?
- inactive, on 09/09/2008, -3/+14It will most likely go illegal, as if they put a tax on it and officially make it legal, you'll see every pot smoker make a big deal out of this.
- StarofTroy, on 09/10/2008, -0/+11They're not laughing cause they're shocked. It's some kind of chemical reaction. A lot of people don't remember laughing and their description of what happened is something like what actually happened. ie " the world was spinning so fast I was in a vortex and I couldn't escape I just kept pulling reality apart only to realize that my vision was my skin and their was a big apple melding with my cheek" dude was just laughing on the floor the whole time.
- Joab, on 09/10/2008, -1/+12Ananath your a ***** moron. He's talking about a having a sober friend in the group who doesn't trip with the rest, not some teenage babysitter watching the kids. Square much???
- republicker, on 09/10/2008, -1/+12Ban it and then pay federal agents billions of taxpayers dollars to go to every grandmothers house in america and remove it from their backyard! Its the american way. lol
- OfNumbers, on 09/10/2008, -0/+11I think if you watch another persons trip on a grainy web cam for some form of education, then wow. When a member of the House of Representatives does this, then...
- D3koy, on 09/10/2008, -0/+11The collective drug-related knowledge of Digg is staggering, to say the least. Every time I come across a drug story there are always at least a dozen people recounting their experiences with it...
- dazparkour, on 09/10/2008, -1/+11Most people show "reverse tolerance" - that is, each time they need to take less and less. I'm not sure how totally I believe this, but most of the time I find that people did not have the proper technique the first time and believe it to be bunk before they attempt a second.
Most people have better luck with the extracts. 5x is a reasonable amount, anything over 40x probably isn't legitimate and if it is it isn't value for money - you don't get a greater experience because you took a higher extract, you are just required to smoke less material. The experience for equal amounts will be the same.
Most people require a good few times to get it "right". Like we say on the internet "Your doing it wrong". Salvia definitely isn't "nothing" or "fake", you probably paid 10 times more than you should have and got something 10 times as good as you should have unfortunately. It isn't a party drug however, which is why when they tried to make it illegal here, the bill was rejected flat out. - inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+10Stop making me want to do this stupid ass drug.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -1/+11You didn't smoke it right, it requires extreme heat, such as a torch lighter, and smoking it is far from fun.
- uselessexpert, on 09/10/2008, -0/+10I see the same thing that happened with Marijuana happening here.
Since is from the earth and it cannot be taxed, they'll make it illegal and then some big pharma company will generate a synthetic compound of it and then it will begin to be prescribe as a drug to assists in patients be more open in therapies.
All of a sudden the big pharma firm wants it to be required to be used in all therapies, so they lobby it heavily paying off a couple of senators and congress people.
Now the big pharma firm is making billions of dollars, and now what the little guy use to get for free or very cheaply he has to get a prescription for or try to buy it in the black market. And that's how our corrupt law system works....
Well, I am just hypothetically speaking here, you know.....that would never happened in the US. - tacochampion, on 09/10/2008, -1/+11Actually this story is pretty inline with most of the salvia experiences I see.
The first time I tried it nothing happened, the second time I tried I was sucked off the couch into a giant vortex that appeared over the coffee table. I grabbed onto the couch for dear life, climbing it, trying not to get sucked into the vortex.
The first time a friend of mine tried it he became CRAZY paranoid, and thought we were all '***** with him', demanding we stop, and he started to try to get up and come after me, but he couldn't walk, and within a few seconds forgot about being paranoid and started laughing.
Either way, the effects wear off in just a few minutes (Though it can feel like it lasted hours)
I can't imagine anyone ever becoming addicted to it. I don't particularly want to do it again, even though I did have crazy intense experiences.
I don't see anything ***** about mlap666s story, and after the operation, I was left with more than half my brain. - JDove6, on 09/10/2008, -5/+14The effects last for such a short time that it seems like it would be dumb to ban it...It's essentially a whippit-type thing. It isn't like you can drive for very long under the influence. You probably would be hard-pressed to figure out how to start the car if you were that messed up on it.
- emmeron, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9That's like saying Kucinich would become president. ;-)
- crunchyeyeball, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9I tried some 10x extract in a bong ages ago. pretty much the smallest amount I could pick up with my fingertips, figuring I'd slowly up the dose until I started noticing some effect. Turns out the tiny amount was more than enough.
It started off with a 70s music video type effect with moving objects leaving trails, then turned into something much more intense.
I started thinking there was someone else in the room watching me (I was alone). I kept reminding myself I was alone, but the awareness of this other presence just got stronger and stronger. I decided to lie down and listen to some music on my mp3 player but started struggling to get the headphones on my ears (I was trying to force the 3.5mm jack into my head instead of the player!?).
As I was struggling to get the headphones on, it felt like the "presence" in the room started getting insanely, scarily angry with me, like some crazy psychopath was screaming at me, about to stab me in the chest because I was unable to get my headphones on quickly enough. Very odd.
I managed to get the headphones on eventually and decided to close my eyes, listen to some music, and relax for a while. By the time the effect had worn off (felt like about 15 mins) I was absolutely drenched in perspiration.
I haven't tried it since, but it really is a fascinating drug - it felt as if I had just experienced, for a short while, exactly what people mean when they say "the voices" told them to do something. It was as if I was somehow made aware of some weird aspect of my subconscious which is normally safely buried away. Definitely not recommended for recreational use, but I'd love to see a proper psychological analysis of its effects. - Visarga, on 09/10/2008, -4/+13Now, that Salvia is #1 on Digg, you can bet your ass it will become illegal. Nice help.
- inactive, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9How many people die per year in alcohol-related driving deaths versus salvia-related driving deaths? I highly doubt most people who are tripping on salvia are even capable of locating keys and driving, and if they are, chances are the plant's effects have already worn off.
I've tried it a few times, and my effects were pretty mild... I just felt I was on a giant rotating cylinder and I was trying hard not to fall off. I don't think I had a hot enough flame. My girlfriend on the other hand, began to have an entire conversation with the lamp and the fan and was trying to get them on the bed (she thought they were characters from Alice in Wonderland) because she thought they were in the middle of the ocean, and the bed was the boat.
It's mildly fun if you have a sitter and don't do too much, but honestly, there's absolutely no reason to ban this. - Joab, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9Ok to everyone who say's they didn't see anything. You need a BUTANE lighter to torch the ***** out of. A regular bic won't do it. The higher the heat the better. If you remain aware of your surroundings your doing it wrong. You know you did it right because you'll have no sense of your surroundings.
- evanct, on 09/10/2008, -1/+10i don't think it's even possible to operate a car on salvia.
- chadsterrr, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9Last time I did it was a horrible experience, worst trip ever.
Do not care for it at all, but I don't think it should be illegal. - Zlorp, on 09/10/2008, -0/+9you did it wrong.
- dazparkour, on 09/10/2008, -1/+9No - there is already laws preventing driving under the influence and laws that say you have to have full control of the vehicle and I support them. There is no need for a new law - that ***** is covered.
- BrettFromTibet, on 09/10/2008, -0/+8I can relate to the 'door handle'... I turned into an wooden dresser covered with alligator scales. No joke!
