The few brave souls who came out were constantly picked on in the student paper and in just about every way imaginable. Except for a small number of married housing units, our campus had single gender dorms with community bathrooms and gang showers.
Even though two of the male leaders of the group didn't live on campus, they became the hypothetical example of why it shouldn't be allowed to be openly gay and stay in the dorms. Gay students could live together in same sex dorms, but an unmarried opposite sex couple could not. Many on campus called this discrimination and said therefore, if you came out, you should be thrown out of the dorms.
That didn't ever happen (to my knowledge), but it was brought up relentlessly as if guys and gals were coming out all the time. With progressive dorm policies like these, it helps the straight and gay students.
In my mind, it all comes down to maturity. If someone is still immature on sexual issues, they'll have problems no matter if they are living with same or opposite sex roommates.
