- Flanker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+118"Might I perhaps point out that human females do not weigh several tonnes, charge at speeds of 30km/h-40km/h and possess foot-long canine teeth with the jaw musculature necessary to crush a grown man's ribcage?"
Clearly you haven't met my boss's wife. - Ystig, on 10/12/2007, -1/+67>>>If this was a human female diving into the croc pool to save her pet Chiuhuahua you'd all be going "oh my god, what an idiot!"
Might I perhaps point out that human females do not weigh several tonnes, charge at speeds of 30km/h-40km/h and possess foot-long canine teeth with the jaw musculature necessary to crush a grown man's ribcage?
This is analogous to a human female charging a chihauhua to save a sparrow from its clutches, not a human female charging a crocodile to save a chihauhua. - kbrower, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45http://youtube.com/watch?v=LLceRWO3LZ4
- poipoipoi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+46aw man, it still dies! boo! send the script back to God for a rewrite.
- speedstream, on 10/12/2007, -5/+45I wonder if that was a female hippo following her maternal instinct after losing her own offspring?
- stupac2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33Hippos will kill people though. Supposedly they have the intelligence of a dog, but they're fiercely territorial, so they will kill.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Thanks for sharing that. I was seriously just about to go screw around with a hippo, but I know better now!
:) - wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30How about a tortoise adopting a baby hippo? ;)
http://www.digyourowngrave.com/tortoise-adopts-baby-hippo/ - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Hate to break it to you guys, but "Hippo saves an impala child from croc"
Yea, except for the fact that the hippo was too late. Poor guy :'( - wurzelgummage, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Probably right with the maternal/paternal/herd protective instinct, but I doubt it was because of losing an offspring.
Hippos have bad eyesight. - JED9, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20i thought hippos just ate little white marbles all day...
- SelfAbortion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17If they can charge 30km/hr I think you'll lose that race.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -10/+23Thanks for the Youtube link. Some of us prefer not using IE :D
- cartoonboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Animals are surprisingly complex. I remember a few years ago when a bird got trapped in our fireplace chimney. It chirped like crazy for at least an hour and I could hear birds chipping outside, as if to respond to its cries. So I opened up the chimney and was somehow able to throw a sheet over it to keep it from flying all over the house. When I released it outside, it flew away and was met in the air immediately by a number of birds. Then they all flew away like they had found a missing member of the family.
Remember a few years ago about the gorilla named "Koko" and the kitten? Koko actually requested a kitten as a pet through sign language and when they gave her one, she loved it like a child loving a pet. Without sounding like Al Gore here, we as humans really need to reconsider our place in this world. - llllloooooo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13" Without sounding like Al Gore here, we as humans really need to reconsider
" our place in this world.
Exactly. We need to make a preemptive strike against these animals before their intelligence which may only now be used for cute amusement, inevitably turns towards plotting our overthrow and demise. - blankman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Hippos kill more people in Africa than any other animal.
- 0v3rk1ll, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14We have eyes, you know. Why point out the obvious? :-/
- Djfind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11A little known fact is that Hippos are the most dangerous animal to humans, too. Hippos have killed more people than any other animal
- Rivetgeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9"Win-win all around."
um....I think the impala would tend to disagree. - mistergosh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Dolphins and mice, of course.
- mistergosh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Thing is: A croc doesn't want to fight an hippo. The croc can, at best, bite its legs. And the hippo has a bigger mouth, with really big teeth.
- CBTF, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Minus the death at the end.. and the maulings..
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6esteban, stfu. djfind is right - hippos cause the most human deaths of any animal on earth.
- D4r7h3v1l, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Not all of us go on safaris often. And few, if any, of us live in Saharan Africa.
May I ask where you live? - Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Errrr...
What does empathy have to do with being smart? They're different quantities. - 0v3rk1ll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yes, that's true. Although they may look harmless, never go even close to a hippo, 'cause if it gets pissed off (and they easily do), you better run for your life!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Hippos are the best animal in the world if you can't tell by my digg username! Boy, if only Steve Irwin would have been there to document that occurance :-( ... R.I.P., mate
- Djfind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Sadly that list is awfully inaccurate; Polar bears don't make it to the top 100, considering there are no humans in Polar bear's natural territories. Even inuit tribes rarely come into contact with polar bears. As for mosquitos, they don't kill at all, Malaria kills, and it's an organism unto itself. With that logic, the top 10 would be comprised entirely of bacteriums. Plus an animal that kills 500 people yearly making the top ten? Unlikely at best.
Not to mention your link doesn't even provide the evidence you claim. Your list may be of deadliest creatures(Although it would still be innacurate) but it would be more accurate than what animal kills more people.
Deer crashes dont cause many people deaths via car either, - Zippo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6This is a Disney movie waiting to happen.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well yeah... I just thought of that. There are plenty of them though so no big deal.
- caselogic, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13He didn't actually save him.
- deodand, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Looks like hippos are up there w/ dolphins now in animal intelligence."
Way to leap to conclusions, Mr. "I watched one crappy video now I'm an evolutionary biologist." If I want your opinion on Hippo Intelligence, I'll send you to university for a biology degree. - whiskeymb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@obvioustroll:
I guess that make him a republican - eN1X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That hippo is cool....but he gave the worst mouth to mouth I have ever seen. Someone didn't do CPR training!?
- idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'm running Linux and I had no problems with it.
- jackcrono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3From what I watched on a discovery channel documentary on hippos they are actually cousins to a dolphin and communicate in the same way as a dolphin does.
- Obvioustroll, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Because, apparently, most people think good intentions matter more than actually doing something effective.
- jtryba, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Empathy implies a complex understanding of self. The hippo had to see the impala being eaten and realize that the impala was not happy with the situation. Of course, every animal knows very well that it doesnt like to be eaten, but to project this understanding across the boundaries of species and beyond natural protective bonds (like that between a mother and calf) is noteworthy. It suggests that this hippo's understanding of its environment is more developed than we give it credit for.
- InsaneMachine, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Crashes in FF if you have javascript blocked for the site(the windows media player has encountered an error....) You must enable Javascript to fix that.
- Athyrius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29. Cape Buffalo (really?)
- They roam in herds of thousands, weigh almost a ton each, and have two quite sharp horns on their big heads. Ouch.
Yep- Cape Buffalo are brilliant on the animal intelligence scale. I have heard of a Cape Buffalo stalking a hunter (who had given him a flesh wound) for days. If you mess with them they do not forget your scent and will kill you in a heartbeat. - 0crabby0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I guess this hippo sort of made up for the one that tried to kill us on holiday...
- ghm101, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4The voice overs for these things is just stupid.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Honestly I'm still scared ***** of hippos. I've heard stories of them eating people. They're as bad as crocs.
- autodata, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's true. Their closest genetic relatives are porpoises and whales and they create clicks and pulses which are believed to be used for communication.
- 15thPD, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Wow, when I first saw the title for this Digg, I was thinking, "Wtf? Why would a hippo save a Chevy?".
- xtarburst, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now days, not even humans are "that" smart
- theapbt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1There was a show on the discovery channel where a mother leopard came upon a "lion" cub. The mother leopard tried to save it from the hyena, but after a while left it there. She could have killed the vulnerable cub, but she sniffed it, carry it gently for a few meters, and left it. The leopard's maternal instict was stronger than her predatory instinct. So, yes, I believe the hippo had a strong maternal instinct when it tried to save the baby impala.
- esteban, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@ Djfind: Have you been talking to Stephen Colbert?
- Langford, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't know if the video makes Hippos looks smart or not, but if does make them seem very nice and sweet.
