- vacax, on 03/18/2008, -35/+268History in the making. The most important speech on American racial issues in my lifetime.
- vivisel, on 03/18/2008, -35/+233This is one of the finest speeches I have heard in a long time. Not to mention some of the most sophisticated cultural criticism.
He walked right up to the Republican talking points. The baptism, the marriage, and he confronted them on the ground of reason. He didn't run away from them, which would have been the consultant's choice, and he didn't run away from Wright. Brilliant. - Ringding3, on 03/18/2008, -31/+217To all of my fellow Pennsylvanians: Don't be rednecks, dump Hillary and end this BS. It's a no brainer.
- felidaeus, on 03/18/2008, -31/+208Yet, after this speech, all the Clinton camp is able to see is his "lies", "justification", and "denial".
You know what? I am better able to respect this man for standing up for wright.
For all those so quick to judge that "you judge a man by his friends", I tell you this.
Christ's friends were the prostitutes, the tax collectors, and the diseased. I say to you that a man should be judged on how he treats his friends, and Obama has shown that he has the moral fiber to stand by them, in good times and bad, and say "I disagree". As Christ said,
Mark 7:
" Nothing that goes into a person from the outside can make him unclean. It is what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean. 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him listen!"
"It is what comes out of a person that makes a person unclean. 21 For it is from within, from the human heart, that evil thoughts come, as well as sexual immorality, stealing, murder, 22 adultery, greed, wickedness, cheating, shameless lust, envy, slander, arrogance, and foolishness. 23 All these things come from within and make a person unclean."
Over the course of this election, so few people have had to ears to hear. Judging on what comes out of this man, he is twice the person Hillary is. - mygdala, on 03/18/2008, -35/+204An amazing speech. Courageous. Honest. Realistic. Not simply politically expedient, but daring to delve into some of the most painful issues our country faces. He does that while addressing his relationship with Wright in a way that's totally believable and speaks to Obama's character, which will ensure he is an enduring figure in American politics.
- smacksaw, on 03/18/2008, -21/+177The more he has to face *****, the better he looks at handling it.
How can people think he's not ready to be president? All you do is deal with *****. He almost makes dealing with ***** look easy. - nehark, on 03/18/2008, -6/+143Just the other day my dear 95 yr old Auntie said the "n" word to me in a conversation about the nomination. She was worried somehow. I couldn't quite decipher it, but it was some vague notion about blacks getting too "uppity" if BHO wins the Presidency. I'd never really heard that word or those types of thoughts out of her mouth in all the years I lived with her. I was shocked, and not mildly, but could I disown her for that? No. She raised me when my parents abandoned me as a small child. She's part of my life. We'll talk about it, but this lately revealed attitude she holds will not diminish my love and respect for her. We'll talk about it. I'll share Obama's speech with her and we can talk about it. That's how we change. Not with anger and silence.
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -25/+142I didn't think I would sit through the whole thing, but I did. Everyone should watch it.
- apersaud, on 03/18/2008, -18/+129This is the REASON this man should be President. What other candidate has come on TV and spoken to AMERICA the way he has?
Another digger posted this, which I found insightful:
Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people.
~Elanor Roosevelt - relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -20/+113I thought Governor Tim Kaine said something interesting on CNN on the subject of Pastor Wright before the speech (And don't bury me for invoking religion, please)...
"...Well, I think Christians understand this. It's Holy Week, and one of the key figures in the Holy Week story is Saint Peter, who said alot of dumb things and did alot of dumb things, but Jesus still put his hand on Saint Peter's shoulder and said, "You will be the rock on which I'll build the church..." So the notion that God works through imperfect people is something we understand."
I've lived with some awful garbage spoken growing up in my own family... But I'm not going to turn my back on them for it. This pastor said some absolutely horrible things in front of his congregation, and they should be scolded, and not simply dismissed -- But I think there's a very sore lack of redemption for him or a better understanding of why and where these kinds of hatreds take root right now. - RoroCo, on 03/18/2008, -9/+97It is amazing how a speech can move people when it is based on reason and truthful statements. I miss that in our political system. The only reason I watch this administration's speeches is to see how absurdly they can spin bad news as positive.
- peticsu, on 03/18/2008, -40/+122I'm willing to do my part to perfect our union!
Go Barack! - NJank, on 03/18/2008, -6/+88wait, a politician who didn't completely shun someone who became a potential political liability? I fail to grasp this concept...
- dn11, on 03/18/2008, -24/+102It's a conversation that needs to be had, out in the open - with each other, in real life. Not just to segregated constituencies in a church or on right wing radio, or hiding behind anonymous handles on internet message boards. Hopefully this can be a new beginning in that conversation.
- lanerush, on 03/18/2008, -30/+104Obama just won the Presidency.
- fiveness, on 03/18/2008, -18/+91Like badly needed oxygen. There simply is no better response to the last seven years of Bush than to elect someone who stands for everything that was without voice since Bush took office. Obama represents all that is right with America and frames all that is still wrong with it in ways that are the most likely to improve the conditions. America is rising from it's slumber.
- b4u68k, on 03/18/2008, -4/+74If Senator Obama gets elected I'm moving to the US.
- TwoKill, on 03/18/2008, -15/+77Can anyone out there imagine Hillary giving a speech so well thought out and so well spoken?
I know I can't. - kaelyiesta, on 03/18/2008, -15/+77I liked his point about the medias attempt to characterize his reverend by those few statements he made. Oh how the media loves to distort reality.
- Metavirus, on 02/10/2009, -35/+93Amazing
- cyclopsface, on 03/18/2008, -9/+66For the same reason he didn't stop talking to his white grandmom when she said racist things about black people. Read the article and maybe think a little - especially before you start calling other people lemmings. Do we want a president who abandons their friends because they don't agree with everything they say? Is that what you do?
- ccfoo242, on 03/18/2008, -26/+83He has the intellect and vision to lead this country! Obama '08!!!
- soccerman90, on 03/18/2008, -6/+55dont worry. Ill be voting for obama in the primary. Luckily i turn 18 a week before the vote
- dld0531, on 03/18/2008, -35/+84This was an excellent speech!!!!
- inajeep, on 03/18/2008, -15/+61Like him or not that was a fantastic speech. I don't know if that speech alone will win those against him to his side but I don't remember a better speech given by anyone for any reason in my lifetime.
- ganlet, on 03/18/2008, -17/+59Speeches like this one, are why I believe him to be truly Presidential.
- soccerman90, on 03/18/2008, -15/+53This is why i support obama. Every other candidate hides from serious questions. They listen to a reporters question, then their answer has nothing to do with the question. (hillary does it alot at debates) but Obama is different, he is someone we can trust to lead us to a better America
- HeDiggMe, on 03/18/2008, -4/+41The full transcript:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/18/obama-rac ... - mishaco, on 03/18/2008, -23/+60best political speech of my lifetime . if he loses the election it'll be a shame worth investigating .
- tucsonsun13, on 03/18/2008, -20/+56Seriously -- it's time for America to grow the f*** up and change for the better. Only men of character like Obama are going to have the rhetorical skills and integrity to bring about that change.
- renagadex2, on 03/18/2008, -16/+51It really is an awesome speech. But I feel like he's speaking to the converted. I mean look at the Hillary/Anti-Obama comments here. They see it as pandering and hollow rhetoric. There is something seriously wrong with people if they think speeches preaching hope and change are foolish and empty.
- mateo60, on 03/18/2008, -5/+40I wish your comment was at the very top. Obama could've thrown Rev. Wright under the bus and been done with it, but he didn't. That's integrity.
- cobbwobbles, on 03/18/2008, -29/+61I really respect him.
Obama 08 - lewhich, on 03/18/2008, -16/+47This guy looks at danger directly and confronts it directly. No downplaying or hiding the facts
- mateo60, on 03/18/2008, -3/+33He could've done the politically expedient thing and thrown the reverend under the bus but he didn't do that. He did speak against those positions, but he was truthful about the fact that he won't denounce the reverend. He could've publicly condemned him and privately been okay with him. But he didn't. That is integrity. Obviously you had your mind made up before the speech, that is if you watched the whole thing. It was about 5% about the stupid situation with rev. wright.
Hillary won't jump on the Rev. Wright thing. Neither will McCain. The situation is over. - Mediaright, on 03/18/2008, -8/+37I think if the Senator wanted to retain loyalty to Africa, he'd be running for a seat somewhere in Africa. Watch his speeches dude. Does anything in there tell you he's not patriotic?
- relaxeder, on 04/17/2009, -1/+29He said that if what he really sat through was "twenty years of divisive and hateful speech" he would have left, but clearly there's more to it than that.
- paulishh, on 03/18/2008, -4/+32he didn't say it was in the declaration. read the speech! he was referring to the constitution as the 'real' declaration of independence 221 years ago--i.e., 1787. the year of the constitution, not the declaration.
- physco827, on 03/18/2008, -2/+30Not exactly the phrasing I would have used but same message. :) He seems to enjoy calling out people on their *****. I watched a democratic debate, and Hilary had said some things about his voting history. He took what she said and disproved it, basically threw it in her face. smacksaw you couldn't be more right. He is an incredible person.
- areric, on 03/18/2008, -2/+28a million digg user's brains just exploded while trying to figure out if they should digg or bury the pro-obama comment with religious overtones.
- jmk4422, on 03/18/2008, -3/+29Sigh. You didn't even watch the speech, did you? He talks about the founding of America. He talks about his love for America. He talks about historic patriots of America. If you're too old to watch and understand that, and demand a simple "I am a patriot" line, then you shouldn't be voting anyway (or driving cars, btw).
- mateo60, on 03/18/2008, -7/+33He was a constitutional law professor. Luckily you know more than he does.
- DVmaker, on 03/18/2008, -19/+44History is being written.
- saska, on 03/18/2008, -2/+27I honestly don't begrudge Hillary Clinton complaining about Obama's skills as an orator. She can't compete with him on that level and she knows no other way to combat it.
The fact that people don't understand that this skill is critical to a truly effective president is what depresses me. We're so used to Bush's ineffectual, blathering delivery that we've stopped watching politicians speak. - beakerwimp, on 03/18/2008, -2/+24norman619: You should read or listen to the speech before commenting. In the speech he directly comments on his relationship with the man, how much of the controversial comments he heard in person and in church (which he admits to openly and is not hiding or holding anything back), exactly how he feels about the comments, and exactly what his continuing relationship with the man is. So your claim that he has not explained in full "why he didn't leave the church when he first heard of of his pastor's hateful sermons" is false. Check out the speech. The least you can say is that the speech openly and clearly addresses the subject that you are concerned about. You owe it to yourself and to your fellow citizens to read/listen to the speech and see what the man has to say before commenting.
- soccerman90, on 03/18/2008, -1/+22i sent in my registration form about a week ago :)
- chocolatetacos, on 03/18/2008, -4/+25Reverend Wright: Character assassinated.
It was actually one of the best speeches of our generation. Too bad so many people are going to completely miss it. - conrail, on 03/18/2008, -6/+27Did you even listen/read the speech, or did you let hannity and el rushbo tell you what he said?
- paulishh, on 03/18/2008, -8/+29I am convinced you didn't listen to the speech.
