- mhf03, on 09/27/2009, -30/+249Its about quality not quantity. When I was in high school I started losing interest after the half way point of school because I became bored. Extending the period of disinterest isn't going to make kids learn more. It's just going to make them hate learning more. Kids need breaks to recharge their brains.
Drop outs are because of crappy outdated textbooks, bad school environment, and bad teachers. Fix that instead of prolonging the amount of time the kids spend in school. - thenoxx, on 09/28/2009, -24/+116When did Digg get flooded by conservative retards?
- inactive, on 09/28/2009, -14/+101NO SOCIALISTIC PUBLIC SCHOOL OPTION! A public option will destroy competition and eventually bankrupt all private education!
If you can't pay for it yourself then too bad, that's capitalism!
/GOP - Pimptastic, on 09/28/2009, -8/+79I like this. Keeps kids in school and off my lawn.
- Nidy1, on 09/28/2009, -4/+70Federal government isn't changing it:
Her school is part of a 3-year-old state initiative to add 300 hours of school time in nearly two dozen schools.
Her school is part of a 3-year-old state initiative
3-year-old state initiative
state initiative - Bic823, on 09/28/2009, -6/+69I love coming to these threads as they hit the front page to see all the outrage before it gets dugg down
- Nidy1, on 09/28/2009, -3/+65Yea! Education is bad!
- ak666jk, on 09/27/2009, -17/+71I'd rather have more time away from my father telling me that we're turning into a socialist empire controlled by satan worshipping Muslims, thank you very much.
- QQMore, on 09/28/2009, -6/+55"I guess will give..."
Looks like at the very least there needs to be more time for basic grammar. - rahamm, on 09/28/2009, -7/+51He would be right to do so. In Mass 10 schools increased class time for 2 hours so students went from 9-5, 9 of those 10 schools got the best test scores in the country. Don't let facts get in your way though.
- SpazAttack5000, on 09/28/2009, -3/+47Yahoo buzz must be down for the day.
- BREZZZ, on 09/28/2009, -3/+45More 1 week vacations, less summer. Keeps the kids minds fresh, but not too bogged down.
- larryjr88, on 09/28/2009, -14/+51Who is digging up these ***** wingnut comments?
WTF? - bozzknows, on 09/27/2009, -30/+64Our students are behind only because they are not taught anything but socialy accepted politicaly correct courses. And because the classrooms resemble a war zone. When they are taught the three Rs in a tranquil classroom they will learn. When the teachers start recieving merit pay in lieu of hazzardous pay they may be able to teach.
- QQMore, on 09/28/2009, -14/+48Conservative retards? How redundant.
- linkesslover, on 09/28/2009, -7/+40PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE COMMUNISM
- geniusj, on 09/28/2009, -1/+33damn those overpaid teachers!
- TVarmy, on 09/28/2009, -5/+35You know what other country had a public school system? It's happening all over again. First, they made sure the children went to school to get "educated," then they started euthanizing the disabled, and then the trains started rolling into the camps. I'm not saying Obama is a Nazi, but isn't it only right we make sure he isn't by shutting down the schools before it's too late? It's a matter of liberty vs. tyranny, people!
/Glenn Beck - AiR1890, on 09/28/2009, -10/+40You're telling me he wants kids to get a better education, socialism!
- superkeer, on 09/28/2009, -10/+39Wow I support Obama's ideas even more now. Anything to keep kids growing up to absorb values like yours.
- ak666jk, on 09/27/2009, -5/+33I dugg you up because you make a good point. But couldn't the disinterest be due to the poor attempts of education that should be fixed? Surely, if that could be remedied then extending the time could help.
- illepic, on 09/28/2009, -1/+29I'm often impressed at the differences between NeoCon Night Digg and Lefty Lunchtime Digg. This place gets really ... rural ... late at night.
- ak666jk, on 09/27/2009, -23/+47I think this idea could actually work out. The more time in school, the more time to teach subject material that in my experience never gets completely covered and I have to learn on my own time. However, this could only work properly if reform is done with schools as there are more problems than just how long students are in school that have to do with their education. Many high schools are treated as a place for purely social activity, and many teachers and entire schools are much too easy on students, letting them get by with a D average and often times certain people like kids on sports teams being given free pass to not do work.
However, no matter how good any reforms Obama proposes about schools, he'll just get the extreme right yelling at him for indoctrination despite what he may actually be doing. - drowningfish, on 09/28/2009, -11/+35Holy ***** storm of wingnut comments.
The President ponders an idea about moving our Education System scheduling away from an ineffective FARM-BASED (agrarian) time system in a 21st Century world driven by a fast-paced, ever-changing global competitive environment, and you wingnuts scream foul? Explained in the same article you all seem to be circle-jerking around there are studies that support his idea of extending the time kids are in school.
Obviously you Digg-wingnuts simply lack the ability to think beyond Glenn Beck's penis that is seemingly shoved into your ears. - mhf03, on 09/28/2009, -2/+25I got into a good college, but learning is still boring. Somethings are just never going to be enjoyable like reading textbooks and memorizing material. The best teachers can do is try to make the material more interesting, but more importantly make sure the students are understanding the subject.
If the school year became longer Id go insane with boredom. I know the value of education and do put in the work required to make sure I do well, but at the end of the day its something I have to force myself to do. Hell, Im majoring in a subject Im interested in and I still hate going to classes and studying but find the internships Im taking a whole lot more enjoyable.
I even found an elective class I took on video games boring, which I found very surprising. Some people are just not meant for a classroom setting. - IrvineKinneas50, on 09/28/2009, -2/+25Read the article instead of just spouting "BUT THE CONSTITUTION" on every thread like this site loves to do so much.
- Nidy1, on 09/28/2009, -3/+25Classrooms resemble a warzone? In what way?
- rahamm, on 09/28/2009, -3/+24Yah earning at the poverty line how dare they!
- inactive, on 09/28/2009, -8/+29No, he really doesn't even know what it means, he just heard it on Rush Limbaugh and knew it was bad.
- Kordras, on 09/28/2009, -7/+28They'll go away now that this story has hit the front page. They can only keep their circle jerk going for so long.
- superkeer, on 09/28/2009, -0/+21Go read Mein Kampf and then try to make that same argument in reference to Barack Obama.
Nutcase. - Ajajadude, on 09/28/2009, -0/+20Considering teachers are forced to deal with ignorant buffoons who are only called "parents" because they reproduced is a job in itself, I'd say the teachers in this country are woefully underpaid.
"My son deserves an A!"
"Your son failed all the tests and didn't complete his homework assignments."
"I'm going to the principal!"
That's pretty much the state of education these days... - ak666jk, on 09/27/2009, -6/+26Tell me exactly, how is Obama representative of Hitler or going against the constitution currently?
- ericcc, on 09/28/2009, -1/+20He's probably thinking of the movie High School High starring John Lovitz
- theSuperman, on 09/28/2009, -1/+19"This just in: Obama rips heads off puppies and sends grandma to her death"
- TVarmy, on 09/28/2009, -1/+19I can't tell which ones are sarcastic and which ones aren't. Where are the /s tags?
What's weird is that it seems like they always flood Digg when it just starts to get late in EST. It's about 11 PM here. Maybe they find that's the best time to try to upvote their comments before they get dugg down. - BobSagetFan, on 09/28/2009, -30/+48Go back to masturbating to Glenn Beck or something, republitards. Or at least find something legitimate to criticize Obama about.
- adamward, on 09/28/2009, -9/+27COMMUNISM!
- ericcc, on 09/28/2009, -3/+21Anybody notice that whenever a possibly anti-Obama comment is made early on it shoots up to about +20 diggs almost immediately then gets buried back down slowly?
- Onion575, on 09/28/2009, -2/+20Oh no, the gays!
/s - centran, on 09/28/2009, -3/+20Federal funding gives the government power over schools. Don't comply and you don't get money.
- hanginginthere, on 09/28/2009, -1/+18Well it's not like I had a summer to begin with... ***** summer homework.
But on a serious note, I don't think that forcing kids to spend more time in school is going to fix anything if there's a crappy education system to begin with. - Oztog, on 09/28/2009, -4/+21Didn't I hear somewhere that Glenn Beck raped and murdered a young girl in 1990?
- Nidy1, on 09/28/2009, -7/+24@austroLogi-
Can you backup the claim that schools are "indoctrinating" out students any particular way? - Mikey4Goalie, on 09/28/2009, -1/+17Dropouts couldn't be stopped unless you made it absolutely illegal to quit school. School is boring because they can not break the kids up into the proper IQ divisions. Those who are extremely intelligent can get into advanced programs, but those who are higher than the middle of the road get stuck in class with kids who have no interest in learning. Those who force the teachers to spend more time settling the herd than teaching. But we can not actually separate them any more than that because it would embarrass someone's poor child.
How about this, put more responsibility on the parents. If your child is a problem or continually fails class because of being a trouble-maker or lack of effort - you don't get as many tax breaks. Because your child is wasting government's money and time. - Oztog, on 09/28/2009, -2/+17Is that all you have to contribute to this discussion.*
*FIXED - HotRats76, on 09/28/2009, -2/+17So you agree with our marxist president? Does that make you marxist too?
- Alphabet, on 09/28/2009, -7/+22I think this is a great idea. Kids should spend more time in school. I remember my AP teachers in high school never had enough time to teach all of the materials they wanted to touch. There is no reason not to have kids spend more time studying.
- TonyTheTerrible, on 09/28/2009, -2/+17its nice to think of our public education system ceasing to be a joke
