- martona, on 10/12/2007, -3/+57What a headline.
The point of Minority Report wasn't the stupid screen. It was the notion of preventing crime by arresting people who didn't even know were about to commit it.
So how does this make that a reality? - Pancake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35You know you are a nerd when you smile uncontrollably watching videos like this. (Guitly as charged)
- nukethewhales, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Yeah when I read the headline I thought the article was going to be about psychics predicting crimes or people being arrested for thinking about doing something.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17Note: Digg wouldn't let me submit the direct link, which is located here:
http://ted.com/tedtalks/tedtalksplayer.cfm?key=j_han&flashEnabled=1
And Videodownloader said it was invalid, so I just downloaded the video off the site and uploaded it to YouTube. I believe this is very interesting and I wanted to share it with the Digg community.
/ Shadowstorm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13i hate it when someone has to ruin a perfectly good joke with a tasteless comment
- tabledesk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10For graphic design this is a much more manageable interface than a keyboard and mouse, even if we've been using them for ten years now. Print designers/photo editors USED to move photos and shapes around on a plane with their hands, and returning to that functionality backed by the power of a computer will simply be nothing short of magic.
- look4alec, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Ummm, yeah this was on here a long time ago, the other video shows just the screen up close and his hands, looks pretty cool.
And the minority report computer was in mid air or on transparent LCDs.
Not to mention this touchscreen monitor doesnt tell the future using crackbabies.... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I can't be the only person who still thinks a mouse is just easier to use. It's great technology and will certainly find a few places to fit in. There's just no way a person can work an 8 hour day with their arms reached out in front of them or spend a few hours playing video games like that.
- isewise, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12This is the second time today I have seen two stories covering the exact same topic on the front page. Someone should create a "Digg for n00bs" tutorial.
- synaesthesia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Awesome video because for one, the guy was so freakin into what he was working on that his excitement became contagious. Second, because there are so many possibilities for that technology that just five minutes of daydreaming leads to one coming up with countless new applications or new ways to use existing programs (much like the ideas we all had when we first saw the Wii controller). Perhaps if this starts off as something primarily used by government/military, it will grow cheaper and become affordable by the public sometime shortly after.
- subscribtion, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Why did you copy and paste someone else's comment? It has already been said, we don't need you to say it again.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Diggers digging damned dupes diligently, dumb diggers duped daily.
- 1911wolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Damn. I thought this would be about precogs. :(
- gh02t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Notice: windows, lowercase. He meant the idea of having programs running in their own little "frames."
- mongrel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6WANT
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4i still waiting for a keyboard that types for you as you think.
- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Done.
And @ Trunkster, the other Digg story linked to a site where it consisted of around 99.99% of ad's. A direct YouTube link is much better, no? - Aurarch, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6still waiting for the psycho-babies in weird fluid...
- trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6This was just on the front page like 2 hours ago. Quit feeding the people hurting digg by digging dupes!!!!
- timmyboywonder, on 10/12/2007, -20/+23please digg the original http://digg.com/gadgets/Amazing_touch_screen_that_could_change_computers_forever
- XBackstabberX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i want one!
- n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Apple holds a patent for touch screens where you just hover your finger over the screen and registers as a touch. That would be perfect for keeping fingerprints off of your $15000 20" touchscreen.
- djpnuemo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i must say, that's impressive.
- apu95, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4That is so awesome...I kept smiling and dropping my jaw :D
- mbradbury, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Isn't this the one that Apple Owns the patents on? It was linked to on digg awhile back
http://www.digg.com/apple/VIDEO_of_the_Multi-Touch_Interaction_Research_-_APPLE_ - ho0ber, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm all about cutting down on dupes, but this one is a better, more relevant link, and not to a crappy video site like the other one.
- DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yup I was just going to comment about the same thing. I am trying to decide whether to report this as a dupe or inaccurate. I am going to go with inaccurate because the headline annoys me more.
- groceryheist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't know about holograms and virtual reality.
Virtual reality has some major drawbacks such as being akward, difficult to configure, and expensive. I dont think I would switch to a VR set in ten years at all, not even 30 years.
I don't know how far hologram have progressed, but this seems much further along in devolopment than holograms.
Keep dreaming star trek man. - mlkmnz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All fine and dandy. But you can do almost anything if you throw enough money at it.
Where's the prediction on the availability of a sub-$1000 unit? - Spec8472, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Someone should create a "Digg for n00bs" tutorial."
They have, it got marked as a dupe though... - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Ok, some of you seem confused, judging from my comments getting buried.
On THIS article:
http://digg.com/gadgets/Amazing_touch_screen_that_could_change_computers_forever
People were complaining of bufferings every 10-20 seconds / Marked as lame because of how many ad's were on the site. Someone was also saying how he couldn't get the video on his computer.
SO, I went into that article and posted the YouTube link of the video that I had uploaded earlier (to post in my article; see first post) into THAT article for people to enjoy the full video because of the complaints. My story did not get frontpaged, unlike that one. I was willing to let this one die out, but obviously diggers dugg this one for whatever reason.
I hope this solves any problems. - CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Please. Unless the reading ability is enough that you could have your fingers about 10 inches off of it, I can see tons of people lowering their hands too much and getting crap all over the screen. Very easily. Try it yourself. Hold your fingers about half an inch over your desk for a little while, and try to "hover" over it for a bit. Move around and all that. Watch how long you go before your fingers drop.
- ScottJG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Or you could have just commented in the other story, like most people do.
- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2He wants a sale, and if I were Google, I'd buy.
- Borramakot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Anyone else thinking about what this could do to videogames?
- Obsidian743, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, how "inexpensive" is "inexpensive"?
- jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ya and they didnt touch the screen that being said this was way cool can i get a coffee table like this
- Zoasterboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow! I wonder if it will get into the market at all soon. And Im sure they could make a sort of smudge resistant screen, or special thin glove or finger covors or somthin.
- CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think it would be a huge aid for RTS games. For FPS, not so much. For anything else... maybe.
For RTS though, we'll be seeing the rise of holograms by the time this becomes standard. And with holograms means a tricked-out table of doom. With FPS, we'll have virtual reality within 10 years or so. Maybe a little more. So, it's really how you look at it. I'd say it'll only be good for games for a few years, if that. - CatalystGhost, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Oh my god, I think I've just found something I want even more than Spore.
And this guy talks just like will Wright. It's amazing how good of a speaker he is.
I want this thing right now. RIGHT NOW. - spooniep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Be sure to check out this digg about Microsoft's competing technology:
http://digg.com/tech_news/Video_of_Augmented_Reality_Interface_from_Microsoft - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If you're submitting a new story, and it's legitimately a new thing, here's a trick:
"www.myurl.com/page.html" becomes "www.myurl.com/page.html?digg=1"
likewise, "www.myurl.com/page.php?arg=value" becomes "www.myurl.com/page.php?arg=value&digg=1" - jasonsfakename, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3This had got to be one of the coolest articles I have ever seen on Digg. Defiantly DIGG!
- Robotsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 edit: already said.
- combatcupcake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have seen this screen at Siggraph last year, and again this year. Old news, atleast for anyone thats been to Siggraph and got to play with it.
It is pretty cool, dunno how long before it goes commercial. - dudinatrix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Awesome idea... but I really couldn't stand listening to that guy ramble on without breathing.
- malice8691, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The minority report computer was tracking his hands in mid air. this is not the same thing.
- deanlowe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://www.on10.net/Blogs/TheShow/3903/
MS is doing the same thing with a projector instead of a touch screen. - brundlefly76, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The minority report interface was interesting only because the nature of the data (visions) seemed to necessitate it, or at least that is how it is presented.
The mouse is actually the interface successor to this type of interface, as it minimizes movement and allows you work much longer, it is only because of the technical difficulty of implementing the two that this interface came later, however that does not make it evolutionary for a HID usability perspective. -
