- epgui, on 11/30/2008, -1/+37Dugg for MIT OpenCourseWare! Up till now, this stuff has gotten me perfect grades in Electricity and Magnetism in University! Hurray for free, quality education!
- fiji5555, on 11/30/2008, -0/+10[in Ancient Greece]
Bill: Socrates. Hey, we know that name!
Ted: Yeah! Hey,
[hands Bill the book]
Ted: look him up. Oh, it's under So-crates. - honeybrass, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6What is the point of anything?
- ellecon, on 11/30/2008, -0/+6An excellent guide for reading and comprehending Ancient Philosophy. Since I lost most of my old lecture notes, this will help me explain concepts like the Tripartite Soul and the Allegory of the Cave to my friends who haven't studied Philosophy. Yep, I'm that much fun. :)
- Matthewmongan, on 11/30/2008, -0/+5Me and the five other people with a ba/ma in philosophy think this is cool.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -3/+8That school rejected me! :D
- Thater, on 11/30/2008, -0/+5I was going to criticize you for being a plebian, but then I actually looked at the notes shared here.
They're pretty much useless if you're not attending the lectures. - Darkspam004, on 11/30/2008, -1/+5They say they can't afford bread?
I say: "let them watch porn." - H4n90fThur5D4y5, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3Maybe we can find out from the notes.
- Matthewmongan, on 11/30/2008, -0/+3well, you know what they say about the unexamined life.
- zmjone2992, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Granted, but most ancient philosophy courses follow the same progression. Ancient is the last class I need for my BA, so this is useful all the same.
- Erfman, on 11/30/2008, -1/+3Whow!
- ellecon, on 12/01/2008, -0/+2A person with no experience of Philosophy may have trouble understanding what may seem like a simple concept to one who has experience with Philosophy. The difference between a student and a teacher is the ability to convey one's knowledge in an easily comprehensible way.
- neried7, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2hooray for OCW! they work hard to provide these courses free to the world. I hope to see the new Latin/Greek curriculum going up soon.
- seansich, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Awesome. This will totally help my debaters!
- Fozefy, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2One of my professors actually just straight up uses these MIT slides for my discrete math course. He pretty much only explains whats going on, but none of the actual math behind it. These are the only resources he sues for the course. In addition, he doesn't speak english very well >.< Lets just say I don't go to class and luckily our text book is quite good :/
- emkaysmith, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2He doesn't start with the pre-Socratics? Weird.
- BTConan, on 11/30/2008, -0/+2Ah man, why didn't you tell me that sooner? It's already (nearly) December.
I can't believe I didn't think about using this for help (I had just gotten as far as Google). - Napiertt, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1I just had the intro course, and I think it's cool too. :-)
- Petrushka72, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1You really think so? I find these notes obscure, rambling, and depressingly unhelpful. It's not noticeably better than the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greek_philosophy and related articles. Even the title is inaccurate: it's not "ancient philosophy" generally, it's just Plato, Aristotle, and Epicurus.
I'd recommend Jostein Gaarder's novel "Sophie's World" as a better introduction to Plato, Aristotle, and Epicurus than this. Or for more serious readers, Russell's "History of Western Philosophy" (http://books.google.co.nz/books?id=Ey94E3sOMA0C&pr ... ), which for all its flaws is very readable and informative. Better still would be more recent books.
I guess the problem is that no *good-quality* texts are available free online. - betheturtle, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1Just actually sitting down and reading a passage from, say, Locke, is actually educational. This is why these people have gone down throughout history. Not because they are brilliant men, which they are, but because they make their information presentable and therefore are remembered.
- epgui, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1The Classical Mechanics course is also incredibly useful, I used that one back in my highschool days for some insight...
Now I'm going to watch it all again, because I took another mechanics class in university! =D
I really feel like I need to write Mr Walter Lewin a letter to say thanks. - kashk5, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1Breast massages are interesting in that they don't provide relief in the same way massaging other parts of the body do. Massaging muscle softens them up and releases lactic acid, both of which alleviates that tense feeling. Now breasts don't have muscle and they don't get tense, so the only way a breast massage would be of any palliative benefit is due to the woman getting aroused in the process, thus releasing the pleasure chemicals in the brain.
- inactive, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1That's not Harvard, that's MIT. Y'know, Harvard only they're good at everything science-based, not just litigation.
- waspbr, on 12/01/2008, -0/+1If u take a closer look at the link, the massage is not to alleviate stress but to induce/help breast growth.
Tho trying to look too much into it completely misses the point of the video - waspbr, on 11/30/2008, -1/+2fine, here you go
http://digg.com/educational/Breast_massage_techniq ... - ujjwal, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1They have video lectures, but not for every course. See this for courses with a lot of video content -
http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/courses/av/ - Stevethegreat, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1I think philosophy is too important to be left in academic circles. Considering that philosophy for the ancients was the process (by which) you gain right thought, it should had been taught to public schools, not in the sense "of what philosophers said" (because that's NOT what philosophy is according to the ancients), but the thought processes they derived or derived their theories from.
In this day and age right thought is more important than anything, knowledge can come easily as soon as you have that and should not be the priority of schools (but rather that of universities). It's too bad that philosophy is a laughing stock these days, considering what philosophers actually said and how more relevant they are to our day to day lives... - Pruvmerong, on 11/30/2008, -0/+1It depresses me that I recognized this reference...
- Matthewmongan, on 11/30/2008, -1/+1it's a wonder philosophy majors are able to reproduce. surprisingly, I have two kids with a willing partner.
- Bloodboiler, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0The river Temarc. In winter.
- Falcons17, on 12/08/2008, -0/+0This is awesome for anyone who wants to gain the benefits of an MIT education without necessarily getting the "diploma". While the education you can gain will not necessarily benefit the professional on a resume, it will most definitely allow ANYONE with access to the internet an opportunity to excel in their career. Creativity is the only prerequisite!
- OMnicient, on 11/30/2008, -0/+0Harvard Extension will take anyone with a check in hand. And then you can go to the "real" Harvard.... if you still really want to.
- OMnicient, on 11/30/2008, -1/+0You passed the course, I see.
- ellecon, on 11/30/2008, -2/+1Reproduction is easier if you're female. Actually, getting people to have sex with you is easier. The ability to reproduce varies with the individual.
- OMnicient, on 11/30/2008, -2/+0You need notes to explain the "Allegory of the Cave"???
That's all Phil 101, also known as "philosophy for sports". - RobLikesBRunch, on 11/30/2008, -8/+3There are hundreds of OpenCourseWare courses, this isn't anything new. No need to Digg it, buried.
- inactive, on 11/30/2008, -8/+3Don't they have video lectures or something? If I wanted to read, I'd get a book. Come on, internet.
- anshuman, on 11/30/2008, -7/+1freee. oh ya. bookmarked.
