- bonkeykong, on 02/19/2008, -5/+71Just get rid of the books, add liquor, drugs and strippers and the library would be perfect.
- gbarberi, on 02/19/2008, -11/+66We are witnessing the downfall of American society.
- gbarberi, on 02/19/2008, -0/+31Actually... untrue. It's not that they don't read anymore; they do. They read online. But, they desire easily digestible content - writing that can be both taken in and understood quickly. It's amazing how people have so much information at their disposal these days, but lack the ability (or desire) to think critically about it (I'm not applying this to everyone). Also, online writing tends to contain hyperlinks, which discourages focused reading. Like the Wiki, although it is a great research tool, people can click through the links and easily forget where they started and on what topic.
- joeycerone, on 02/19/2008, -2/+25nothing beats the hot red bull girls coming through the library at 2am during final exam week to give out free red bulls
- AAK15, on 02/19/2008, -2/+24Libraries rock me like a hurricane
- GemStar38, on 02/19/2008, -1/+21Not everyone can play at the same time so it is possible that a few will look around and find something of interest to borrow.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -2/+21kinda defeats the purpose of tranquility and silence in the library
- antonio97b, on 02/19/2008, -1/+19Great, when I'm trying to read a book I'l hear nothing but:
CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. - capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+16To ■, or to ▲? That is the Question.
- jgsketch, on 02/19/2008, -5/+20Cool to know that my library has these types of events. Just need the energy drink stand and it will be complete. I doubt that they read or check out books more than they use to just because they are at the library.
- funkymonkey01, on 02/19/2008, -1/+16changed a bit since my day
- FirstDigg, on 02/19/2008, -1/+15That's my question too. Does the bait get them to check out more books. I'd guess it can't hurt too much, but I'd like to hear numbers on how many more book checkouts they got as a result of this program.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -6/+17I was THROWN OUT OF A LIBRARY
last weekend for putting all of the Bibles in the fiction section. Man, they have no sense of humor... - FatLoser, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11Yeah, because cheat books are the epitome of great American literature.
- nicksauce, on 02/19/2008, -2/+12"Getting teens to come to the library is right up there with getting them to go to church: It's not exactly the first place they want to go."
Big difference is that one of these places is actually worth going to. - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -1/+11ur sick, just plain sick
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=terrb56Eorc this is you, the pervert - xero7, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9Why can't they just have libraries dedicated solely to video/computer games or computer software? Twould make a lot of sense in this day and age.
- rustyrobot, on 02/19/2008, -3/+12Teenagers (adults too) don't read anymore. It's a little pathetic.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+9yea just like how books disappeared back when the library started letting you get them for free 100 years ago
- VinnieDaMac, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7I'd go to the library if this library was in my area.
- stellamaris, on 02/19/2008, -2/+8I work at my hometown's library, and I myself used to organize bi-monthly DDR parties. We put up christmas lights, disco balls, and hooked up a crappy PS2 to a projector so it was 6 feet tall. It was AWESOME.
I organized a lot of stuff for teens (or as we call them, young adults). It's true, if you cater to their needs, they will use the library more, if only for a place to hang out. Its better than whatever mischief they can get into when not under supervision. - FatLoser, on 02/19/2008, -1/+7Never happened to me :(
I feel like i've missed out on some great thing, and my soul weeps because of it... i am going to move to Bridgend now - inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5why not?
- FatLoser, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6I guess you could argue that there is no great American literature, but then you would just be flaunting your ignorance. Hemingway, Twain, ... go look up the other couple dozen greats if you want. Not my place to the blanks where your schooling failed.
- Dorepoll, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5Reading is underrated.
- capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5okay, now do that in one sentence and no capitalization and I'll read it.
- coheedcollapse, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5I take photos for the local paper and they sent me to a library one night to take photos of the kids playing DDR and Guitar hero on projectors in one of the reading rooms. What a mixed up world we live in.
- terra42, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5i used to volunteer at this library. that was before guitar hero was around, but rochester's library's video game section has been increasing impressively, actually has a lot of good games. and there's nothing wrong with throwing guitar hero parties - they're in a room where nobody will be disturbed by it, and it's a great way to draw kids to the library...if they're there, they might as well check out something, you know?
- kds405, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5OH God yes! Let's look out for the interests of multi-billion dollar industries over struggling institutes of community knowledge.
- bitterbug, on 02/19/2008, -0/+5I think libraries are given certain exceptions under the law.
It's like how it used to be with photocopies, they'd make sure you only made copies of a limited number of pages if you were doing reports for school.
Do they still do that? - FatLoser, on 02/19/2008, -1/+6liar... nobody goes to Hooters for the wings. Everybody knows the chili is better.
- TripcodeMel, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4I went to an anime convention a couple months ago, and there was a booth from the *local library* in the dealer's room, touting all the manga and anime DVDs that the library had started stocking in recent years.
I thought it was cool. Then as I was walking off, I did a double-take, and realized the librarian was dressed as Yomiko Readman. Holy *****, *****. - AussieJames, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Goodbye Blockbuster!
- fluidfoundation, on 02/19/2008, -2/+6Whats next? Hosting orgies?
- bfrank72, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4'tis a strange world in which we live.
- Brad324, on 02/19/2008, -4/+8is it legal to do this with games? It certainly can't be in the publishers' best interest. Never mind video game rental stores.
- blzbulb, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5Ooh, the library should get a DJ. Nothing says reading like kids with glo-sticks.
- m0d3s7m1k3, on 02/19/2008, -3/+7Anyone else wondering why your taxes are being used to pay for someone else's kid to learn how to play a fake guitar instead of reading a book?
- vypergts, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Bender: "Eh, I'm gonna go build my own library but with gambling and hookers..."
- bitterbug, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4So it was you!
London, Ontario's central library had a run of bad press because middle aged men were having sex with each other in the bathroom. And despite it getting regular coverage in the paper, they kept on hooking up there! - BestJaxx, on 02/19/2008, -0/+4Let's hope so.
- wafflez, on 02/19/2008, -1/+5@rnwen2750
it wont let me reply to you, but..you're joking right? you honestly think that there is no great American literature!? I'm so sick of people jumping on the 'stupid america' bandwagon, sheesh. - Monkeman, on 02/19/2008, -1/+4Old joke. Plus, when you do it in public libraries instead of bookstores you are making it worse for a struggling system that does good in society instead of ***** over THE MAN or whatever.
- inactive, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3because thats ***** disgusting
- spyd3rweb, on 02/19/2008, -2/+5No Blackjack?
- albinorhino101, on 02/19/2008, -0/+3And books don't have CTRL + F
- ronaldinho, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2Personally I prefer to keep that separated......I just can't shake the notion that a library is a place of books. I was like WTF when I read the article. I do think if they simply have a video game center, that will be great for kids and adults alike.
- capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2IANAL, but making limited copies for educational purposes is fair use.
Anyone has the right to lend their possessions, just like we can resell. What is illegal is unrestricted copy. For example it would be legal for me to send you a copy of some mp3's I own so long as I immediately delete my copy of the mp3's. Just like I can lend a book. Me making a copy of a book and giving it to you is illegal(unless it falls under fair use like above) - capiCrimm, on 02/19/2008, -0/+2But you have to pay for me to not to shine a flashlight in your face.
- rnwen2750, on 02/19/2008, -1/+3I wasn't serious that there was not any great American literature. I was teasing capiCrimm for replying to a post about great American literature with a quote by a great British writer.
