- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -58/+135The reason cops stop speeding cars, and cars that run through a red light, is to save the lives of pedestrians and fellow motorists who you have a very high chance of murdering. And the reason people are ticketed for this is to DISCOURAGE this kind of reckless behavior and callous disregard for your fellow man.
It's incredibly disturbing and depressing that someone went through the trouble of doing this to their license plate, just to make it easier on themselves to risk the lives of other people without any repercussions.
Truly, truly disgusting. - EvilDoer, on 10/12/2007, -10/+61Does not being able to read the plate really matter? It's not like its a Toyota Camry, there's a handful of Lamborghinis running around the country, license plate or not it won't be hard to find.
- bflfab, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44This is most likely using a electrochromic polymer that goes opaque when an electric potential is applied. Most likely tungsten oxide between two pieces of glass.
- SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -7/+37Try very illegal, its pretty much equal to driving without a license plate if you ask me...
- aviazn, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32"You can kill someone in a head on collision if both parties are going 70 as if both parties are going 100. You're just about dead either way :)"
And how often do head on collisions occur? Usually people cut each other off or run people off the road. And as we all know, kinetic energy=1/2mv^2 which means the energy involved increases exponentially with velocity, so a 30 mph difference does have a big impact.
Having said that, consoneo is dead on in that speeding isn't inherently dangerous; take the German Autobahn, which has a better safety record than the American interstate system. Of course, driving culture in Germany is entirely different than that in the states. If we were ever going to legalize high speeds, as consoneo says, it would take a huge effort to change the mindset of the American driving public and our licensing system in order to make something like that work in America. Germans don't have learner permits; every second of driving they do before they get their license is done with an instructor--and they have to pay for all of it, a couple of thousand dollars in all. Also, driving in Europe in general takes up more of drivers' concentration. It's seen more as an activity in itself--not something to be done to get from one place to another while drinking coffee, eating, talking on cell phones, etc--which is why manual transmissions are the norm over there and automatics haven't taken off there. - radiofrequency, on 10/12/2007, -26/+5495 in a Lamborghini Gallardo is nothing like 95 in a Honda Accord. Speed limits should be set based on the safety record, handling, brake power and overall condition of the car, not according to some random lowest common denominator figure. While I don't condone unsafe driving, speeding on an empty highway at sunrise should not be cause for a ticket.
- MikeEnIke, on 10/12/2007, -11/+36BUT, you won't get a red light ticket. Also, cops can't prove it is you when you are pulled over if it's like a day later.
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25"i bet you'd get pretty f*ed in court if the police were able to prove that you were doing this. (assuming they could catch you)"
Like, for example, being able to produce a video showing a car with your license plate number and one of these devices. - stylerm, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37BONGO.
- Sidedish, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37BANGO.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -13/+37BINGO.
- brjndr, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29Having no plate showing while driving will get them pulled over, so this is just for tolls and cameras. But, just having this device on your car is probably illegal. Now, all the highway patrolman who are aware of the ballrun will be on the lookout for a white Lamborghini Gallardo, Ballrun sticker on back, California Plate 5TJF479.
Should have kept this to himself. - Vary, on 10/12/2007, -12/+35Geeks. ;)
- wangeyes, on 10/12/2007, -25/+42@consoneo "Speed doesn't kill, inattention kills."
Your post is one of the most stupid things i've ever read. All the attention in the world isn't going to help you if some unpredictable happens. You can't predict everything. - Vary, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Very cool. I love how pleased the guy sounds with himself when it works.
- KyleRayner, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Bullrun? Is this some ripoff of the Gumball Rally? o.O
- dish, on 10/12/2007, -12/+23that plate cover is good against speed cameras.
- DNABeast, on 10/12/2007, -11/+22Sure, some cars are safer and some cars handle better at high speeds and some drivers are better at hadling cars and dealing with surprises. What you're missing though, is that traffic is at it's safeest when it's predictable, and is all the good drivers with good cars and good tyres went at one speed and everyone else went at another there would be too much opportunity for confusion.
Sure this would work if you had two seperate sets of roads, but then you'd have to police if people were keeping their cars up to spec, or driving someone elses cars. It's a logistical nightmare.
Just drive at the speed limit guys, and if you want to drive you $500,000 car at extreme speeds there, in fact, is a road you can do this on.
IT'S CALLED A RACEWAY YOU *****!!!!!!!!one1!!eleven!!11!!
*and breathe* - harumph, on 10/12/2007, -16/+27it wouldn't be so impressive if that thing ran you over and the person got away with it because their license plate was illegible. i don't have much patience for this kind of stuff, like the douchebags who speed around on motorcycles or in a souped up honda. i can't respect someone who is so grossly blase about endangering innocent bystanders.
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11...so I guess since he just posted his license plate # on YouTube, the cops can go ahead and send any and all tickets to a car matching that description with an illegible license plate to the owner registered to that plate #. Genius. Pure genius, to post the video.
- andrebsd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@olegk: That would be why he had to get higher rated tires for that Porsche. High end cars have a minimum speed rating for the tires that are met before they can be put on the cars, it's so you don't have standard tires on there that would come apart at 120 or so.
In some cases you might just have to go elsewhere for your tires. I had that problem with my BMW; wen't for tires and was told they didn't have any to match the rating of the vehicle. So I wouldn't be concerned about a blowout, it's not like Porsche uses Firestone. - darwin22, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Punctuation please.
- sapo916, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12There will be some who will want to vote me down but when they lose someone they care about because of these asshats who think they can drive they all of a sudden change their opinion. HA!
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8In case you didn't know, the Bullrun is an annual event in which jaded, rich jackasses with nothing better to do with their time or money embark on a rally across the USA to give some form of excitement to their lives as they get no joy from doing anything useful for humanity.
Since they are both rich and jackasses, they are clearly above the law, and endangering the lives of people who happen to be in the path of this rally is but a small detail.
If you look up Bullrun on Wikipedia, the entire listing reeks of some PR agency posting rather than a NPOV look at the event and lacks any form of criticism. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -49/+55Neat link.
I hope none of my family members are killed on the highways due to this irresponsible game.
I hate humans. - mc7winkie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@ consoneo
The little psychiatrist inside me is saying that you are rationalizing and denying any fault on your part for an accident that you will eventually get in. - INHUMANITY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Completely useless during the day.
- thru9, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think this is awesome, seriously my daily commute to work in NJ is littered by reckless drivers, sadly they are the ones not speeding, they sit in the left lane doing typically 55 or 60 in a 65 zone, then slam on their brakes, and attempt a three lane change to get their exit, 95% of these drivers have PA plates. People driving these cars, in races like these are typically far better drivers then the reckless upper-class individual talking on their cell phones while driving their lux SUV's.
- gbeirne, on 10/12/2007, -9/+14You could always avoid getting caught by speed cameras by sticking to the speed limit.
But, then again, these ridiculous cross-coutry races do please me. - yarsrevenge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+61. The obscured plate have no effect on him being pulled over for speeding and other moving violations if he is caught by a cop.
2. It's illegal to operate motor vehicle on public roads without an identifiable license plate number.
3. The plate obscuring effect would only be effective for traffic light speed cameras. In some states, a camera identifying the driver is also required to prosecute.
4. I highly doubt someone with access to the resources to procure the requisite electronics and materials, not to mention a Lambo, would be dumb enough to utilze a real license plate number on a public YouTube video. - isemism, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Anyone ever heard of a little movie called Deathrace 2000? (1975, staring Sylvester Stalone and David Carradine)
"In The Year 2000 Hit And Run Driving Is No Longer A Felony. It's The National Sport!"
http://imdb.com/title/tt0072856/ - harumph, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10what in the hell would you make a disappearing plate for besides to let you drive like a maniac and not get caught? i am not someone who insists on driving 55 mph but i see tons of crazy ***** go on on the roads because people just don't give a ***** who they are endangering. a lamborghini is capable of going super fast and if you drive like a maniac and run someone else off the road you should rot in jail. i was nearly killed by someone who ran me off the road into the median while i was doing 65mph, they got away and i have never forgotten the frustration of that incident. i was really poor at the time and i had to do without a car for months. the creep who did it completely got away with it. this kind of behavior is not victimless. let them do it on a track and if they screw up they can crash and burn alone.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -9/+13The people who make these things should be locked up. I'd like to see what people think about this when the car that hits them in a hit and run gets off scott free because the license plate was hidden.
License plates are there for a reason! - aludwin, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12yeah i'm sure they're all out looking for him right now!
- Chmura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Would love to have that and use it on the I-Pass here in Illinois.
- chrisrad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6They sell special "plate spray" here in Australia - which is of course, illegal. However, it's quite noticeable in my experience - I don't know how different it is from standard "clear coat paint" other than a label but yeah, this method is definitely much cooler and easier to "hide".
Just gotta remember to turn it on and off at the right times. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+19Exactly. I hope this guy gets arrested now that people (and hopefully the police) know his license plate number.
- isny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Obviously the Cannonball Run. The Lamborghini has the two hot chicks in it. Also be on the lookout for Jackie Chan in the Mitsubhishi and Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise disguised as military personnel. Captain Chaos!!
- diggmanic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Looks like they are using those glass they use for bathroom door thats change from clear to opaque with the lock of the door.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Lots of either jealous or clueless people here. I drive a Porsche 911 that is capable of 185mph. At 100 mph it's like a slow walk in the park, the brakes, suspension, steering is all setup for maximum stability and safety at those higher speeds. When one of these babies passes you like a bat out of hell and it looks like it's not even trying, guess what ? It's not even trying.
The person that will end up killing you is the soccer mom tootling along at 70 not paying attention talking on her cellphone and reading the paper. Shame on anyone who uses a cellphone while driving, you're more dangerous than a drunk driver (as tested by mythbusters). - olegk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3no, more like "Step out of the car. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you..."
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4what about this: You drive (not run) around with no license plate, when a cop tries to pull you over, you click the button and bam, he'll be like "wtf?".
- deadpixel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4oooohh... fuk me. i needed that a little while back.
went thru a toll exit that was suppose to be free (they had a sign). went thru 3 times... got a letter the other day that said i had to pay the toll and the ine plus the fee(?) for it... 3X over. the total was $223.25 :(
called the MFers and she tells me they can waive the fines if i pay by creditcard today. can't win if you don't know how to play. - unvme331, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@everyone above
Stop whining back and forth like four year old fighting. who cares.
Since everyone has commented on the racing part did anyone else realize this isn't a video about the Bull-run race. It was about the unreadable plate!
ALL I WANT TO KNOW IS HOW IT IS DONE???? - tacom8, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7and moody what do you drive? "high performance" civic by chance? i kid, i kid...
but good point SHAME on anyone who does by that car and not drive the piss out of it... - harumph, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9i am not a hater because i can't afford a high performance car, i am a hater because those who can tend to think it gives them license to be as much of a douchebag as their car will allow them to be. maybe i will just buy a fighter plane and fly fast and low in between buildings because it would be a shame not to utilize such an awesome machine for the most self-indulgent thrill i can conceive of. who are you to tell me i can't?
- blablaman, on 10/12/2007, -13/+15Sounds good. I wonder how legal it is.
- beaurich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually saw a mustang try to race an undercover cop in a seemingly plain white camaro. Mustang revved his engine, cop revved his, mustang took off (already in excess of 80 when it started), the cop took off much faster. Needless to say the cop won and I saw the mustang being towed on my way in the opposite direction 30 minutes later. One of the funniset things I have seen.
- MikeMacMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You license plate doesn't really matter when you drive the only Lamborghini Gallardo within 500 miles
- olegk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Why are highways marked at 55 MPH?"
That I never understood too. There's a highway around where I live, and the speed limit changes from 65 to 55 to 50 withing 5 miles, and it's the same highway. It doesn't make any sense. -
