- atlasdugged, on 06/25/2009, -13/+326Something tells me that Rush Limbaugh would not have liked Thomas Jefferson...
- janjamm, on 06/25/2009, -6/+291It always amazes me how little we know of our history, or rather, the details of our history. Jefferson was one of the most literate and progressive thinkers of, maybe, all time in America. Architect, writer, philosopher, farmer, correspondent, builder, scientist, astronomer, breeder, gardener, he lived his life so fully. When I think of him and the depth and breadth of his learning and curiosity and mental capacity, I realize how much modern man has shrunk.
- NikoKun, on 06/25/2009, -3/+206"Can you imagine the reaction if word got out that a president of the United States cut out Bible passages with scissors, glued them onto paper and said, 'I only believe these parts?'"
...just... LOL - pinkflyingpig, on 06/25/2009, -7/+152Jefferson never allowed "Life and Morals" to be published during his lifetime. A truly wise man to realize that his religion was known to himself and his God alone.
- inactive, on 06/25/2009, -5/+135It's called "deism"
If our public schools did their job, you would know all about this bible and the religious and philosophical views that created the secular nation we live in. Ben Franklin, John Adams, Thomas Paine, etc. etc. All deists.

Article 11 - misterrock, on 06/25/2009, -8/+124it's WOULD HAVE.
not WOULD OF
jesus christ it's not that ***** hard. *****. PREPOSITIONS ARE NOT VERBS. GOOD DAY - digglakings, on 06/25/2009, -5/+112dude had some time in his hands :)
- ChromaVita, on 06/25/2009, -0/+88"But if you are the author of the Declaration of Independence, I guess you are allowed certain inalienable rights..."
Fixed. - inactive, on 06/25/2009, -2/+87No internet, no tv. I'd start cutting up bibles too.
- richmomz, on 06/25/2009, -2/+75"I personally find the thinkers of early American history to be more fascinating than the philosophers of old."
Indeed, for unlike the philosophers of old the founders of America went beyond merely *discussing* how to make a better and free society and actually *did* it. - jdames1980, on 06/25/2009, -3/+76And don't forget a bunch of slaves to do all your housework for you.
- KittySpark1es, on 06/25/2009, -9/+80"Can you imagine the reaction if word got out that a president of the United States cut out Bible passages with scissors, glued them onto paper and said, 'I only believe these parts?"
I'm pretty sure George W. Bush was doing that the last 8 years. - swiftekho, on 06/25/2009, -0/+68And how much I personally fail at life compared to this man. Jefferson is the one that said the Constitutional Convention was "an assembly of demi-gods." Thomas Jefferson realized he was among some of the greatest minds of his time. I personally find the thinkers of early American history to be more fascinating than the philosophers of old.
- soderl, on 06/25/2009, -12/+75Extremely old news, its a well known fact many of the Founding Fathers were deists
- jiggawatt, on 06/25/2009, -2/+61America wasn't always a land of fundamentalist evangelical christians, despite what they want you to believe. The founding father's views on religion were a lot different than what we see today, and expect our leaders to believe. Transcendentalists progressed, whereas we've seemed to regress due to the continual deforming of history by the religious.
- johnsweber, on 06/25/2009, -4/+60It sums up my religion as well, which I tell people is "i'm cool with jesus". Because, in the end, I like the guy and he taught pretty good morals. Never even spoke against the gays, you know?
Now Paul, it's beyond me why Christians listen to that guy more than jesus. Christianity should be called Paulinity or something. - MayorMcCheapo, on 06/25/2009, -1/+57Completely interesting piece. It seems that everything I read today about Jefferson has to do with his reputation, and how he's going through a bit of historical review. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/526471 ...
- richmomz, on 06/25/2009, -5/+58I don't think Limbaugh would care for *anyone* that doesn't share his spastic view of the world.
- TheSwashbuckler, on 06/25/2009, -3/+55Today's Republican Party would not have liked Jefferson if they knew him.
"A conservative is one who admires radicals centuries after they're dead."
--- Leo Rosten - Hetman, on 06/25/2009, -9/+60I find it interesting that he took all the miracles out. Miracles seem like the lamest cop out ever. Its like you have free will but every once in awhile instead of working for your goals God is just going to throw you a bone. It is silly.
- DetpackJump, on 06/25/2009, -2/+53I think Bush found the scraps that Jefferson didn't use.
- MicrosoftBob, on 06/25/2009, -1/+51Unfortunately, his progress was somewhat hampered by the fact that he kept eating the paste.
- joshmoney, on 06/25/2009, -1/+49But wasn't that referring to the book of Revelations itself? The entire Bible hadn't even been assembled when Revelations was written. Plus Jefferson took it out...
/"It is between fifty and sixty years since I read it [the Apocalypse], and I then considered it merely the ravings of a maniac, no more worthy nor capable of explanation than the incoherence's of our own nightly dreams.'
-Thomas Jefferson, letter to General Alexander Smyth, Jan. 17, 1825 - strib666, on 06/25/2009, -6/+53Rush doesn't like anybody who thinks for themselves. People are only supposed to believe what he believes.
- wannaBdug, on 06/25/2009, -25/+68I think Jefferson and I would of gotten along great. Would of loved to sat down and talked with him.
- techblogLAT, on 06/25/2009, -30/+69God bless our Founding Fathers
- seanstuart, on 06/25/2009, -3/+42Yea, yea, I screwed up that comment. I deserve the burial.
- mr0nine2five, on 06/25/2009, -1/+39I only learned about this Treaty a few years ago on Digg.
WHY DIDN'T THEY TEACH ME THIS IN HIGH SCHOOL?!?!?!?!?
Oh yeah, cause that'd ruin everything.
*Dugg* - Hetman, on 06/25/2009, -4/+39Old testemant God seems to be all for it.
- broncfan23, on 06/25/2009, -0/+32He said, GOOD DAY!
- strib666, on 06/25/2009, -3/+35That was the whole point of the exercise, because Jefferson wasn't a christian.
- footbag01, on 06/25/2009, -8/+39Smartest President Ever!
- richmomz, on 06/25/2009, -3/+34"Say nothing of my religion," Jefferson once said. "It is known to myself and my God alone. Its evidence before the world is to be sought in my life; if that has been honest and dutiful to society, the religion which has regulated it cannot be a bad one."
- MicrosoftBob, on 06/25/2009, -4/+34"...well known fact.."
By whom? I think your overestimating the knowledge of history/religion of the US citizenry.
Look, were talking about a country where the Thanksgiving story is still thought of as the first-grade version, and half of the population believes in a literal interpretation of the Genesis creation story.
I would guess that no more than 1% of the US knows that many of the founding fathers were desits. - Ry3687, on 06/25/2009, -0/+30This passage refers to the book of Revelation. Revelation was written in 96 AD, while the Council of Nicaea put the Canon (the Bible) together in 325 AD. The writer of Revelation had no clue that his letter would be included in the Canon (or that there would even be a Canonizing) , and therefore was not referring to the rest of the Bible.
- miffelplix, on 06/25/2009, -5/+34The greatest canard of the religious right is that our country was founded on Christian principles.
- HEAVYisSPY, on 06/25/2009, -3/+32Yeah, get one on camera and we'll talk...Get one that appears in a laboratory over and over again, not just rumors from long-dead superstitious farmers.
If a comet flew by and magically changed its trajectory to spell out 'I am Zeus, father of Creation, worship me!' I would be open to the idea that Yes, Zeus might just exist.
As for faith healing - have somone's arm regenerate - on camera, in front of a million people. Do it again, and again. Sign the deed. Don't be cryptic and vague with your prophecy, in John Edwards fashion. - mrogi, on 06/25/2009, -13/+42The George Carlin Bible is the greatest sacred text ever written. It is shorter than one page.

- uc1digger, on 06/25/2009, -7/+35Father's view of God, Interesting...
- wissler, on 06/25/2009, -3/+30Rational atheists appreciate deism for its causal view of the universe. Certainly there are plenty of irrational atheists who hate Jefferson. But there are those who certainly love him.
You shouldn't read too much into the term "atheist"--it merely means you don't believe in a particular entity, it doesn't specify what you do believe, which can vary widely between atheists. Rational atheists have much more in common with Jefferson than most Christians do. - HEAVYisSPY, on 06/25/2009, -2/+29It's kinda sad that - before Darwin and modern cosmology - we had more rational Christians and Deist leaders than we do now.
We don't pick scientists and intellectuals for leaders that often, generals and actors have crowded the marketplace. - archivedigger, on 06/25/2009, -1/+27Secular rationalism is a good way to describe cutting the bible up with a pair of scissors and saying, "Okay, these passages are the ones I can tolerate."
- noahhoward, on 06/25/2009, -12/+38Wow, if that doesn't seem like a corrupt politician or church official wanted to make sure their amendments stayed in place.
Why does god need to issue an ultimatum against revision? - Skye16, on 06/25/2009, -0/+25Checkmate on what? This is perfect validation, ass. It makes Jesus into a man - a man to be respected (at least the good bits) and ignores the rest. How is that checkmate to atheists? This seems more like checkmate to Christians, who believe in the divinity of Jesus. Methinks you're not a very intelligent individual.
- richmomz, on 06/25/2009, -1/+27There was a lot of variety in their beliefs, which was part of the reason on their insistence on the separation of Church and State - so that everyone could be free to worship as they chose (or not to!) without having any single belief or interpretation of Christianity imposed upon them by the State.
- MacBandit, on 06/25/2009, -1/+26Jefferson would not have agreed with either of our current parties.
- toxicityj, on 06/25/2009, -2/+26Possibly because Paul was the ultimate case of "born again christian". He persecuted Christians for most of his life then saw the light, so to speak, and followed the lord. Then he went and lived the life Jesus told his followers they should live. So I guess Paul was jesus-like in the way he lived his later years, but people could more relate to paul than jesus.
Plus you hear more from Paul than Jesus anyway. It's all stupid to me, but there it is. - inactive, on 06/25/2009, -2/+26I'm trying to visualize the sentence the way you wrote it. Limbaugh quietly critiquing a frothing Jefferson makes me LOL.
