- andrew522, on 10/10/2007, -7/+110hmmm sounds like a job for Mythbusters!
- fhernand, on 10/10/2007, -7/+101highly ineffective in battle... one bullet = two dead samurai warriors :p
(btw, are there Katanas of other nationalities?) - secretmode, on 10/10/2007, -4/+76ok I shoot u deflect
- AZTriGuy, on 10/10/2007, -3/+54I guess that really was a Hattori Hanzo sword...
- rigelstar, on 10/10/2007, -1/+49Thank god for the subtitles or I wouldn't have understood the seemingly unrelated boisterous rounds of laughter.

katana vs .50 cal machine gun is more entertaining. - Fracture98, on 10/10/2007, -0/+37Love this Youtube comment from Pwrrkid:
we could solve all our problems if we just made a gun that fired swords!
Classic. - SurrealEstate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+30Asian is not a language?
- onewingedangel9, on 10/10/2007, -2/+29They wouldn't be called Katanas. Katanas (and wakazashi, etc) are made through specific processes unique to the Japanese.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/10/2007, -0/+22He would probably say "I found 2 halves of a bullet in this person."
- godmode, on 10/10/2007, -3/+24now try shooting the blade on it's flat side.
- h4mx0r, on 10/10/2007, -2/+21*shoots you*
You are dead. - blueRAP, on 10/10/2007, -0/+16I'll definitely have to remember what I learned from this the next time I face a .50 machine gun.
After 6 successful deflections, RUN! - exomni, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Dude, it didn't DEFLECT the bullet, it CUT THE ***** BULLET IN HALF.
- DropTheOxygen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+16Yeah, because everyone with slanty eyes all speak the same language right guys?
Hrmm, I wonder why - gwolf, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16No Samurai has two bullet fragments in his chest instead of one.
- imdragon, on 10/10/2007, -2/+15I knew my Katana would come in handy one day. Not only will I be able to defeat Zombies, but also deflect bullets from the living!
- slezzzter, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12Yeah but the mythbusters would do it correctly. For instance, that bullet could have been lead, which is a very soft metal. Would it work against a jacketed hollow point or FMJ? The Mythbusters would try all three, then move on to rifle rounds, then thermite. They always take things way further than they have to. That's good, because after this video I'm left wondering "if a bullet won't affect it, what will?"
- Crimsoneer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Have a cookie
- Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13Considering the laugh track throughout the segment, I wonder what the show was actually about. It would be interesting for Mythbusters to replicate the test.
- halavais, on 10/10/2007, -2/+13The video actually refers to it as a "nihon-to," or just "Japanese sword."
"Japanese sword vs. pistol. Japanese sword wins." - Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Let me guess, didn't watch the video, but just had to comment.
- Pyrogen, on 10/10/2007, -1/+11You mean "Japanese," and its not a subtitle? Japanese TV loves to put up lots of information on TV shows on the screen, sometimes to the point of obscuring the picture.
- requinox, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10This video has nothing to do with deflecting bullets. Even the description in the link mentions *cutting* through bullets.
- moskaudancer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9Plate armor (of the day) was just a chunk of low-grade steel; a katana blade is made of high-quality steel folded over itself hundreds if not thousands of times, increasing the strength of the metal far beyond that of simple plate armor. The other difference is that where the armor took the full force of the bullet impact, the katana in the video only deflected the bullet's two halves (and thus most of its kinetic energy) in another direction. But, yeah, I guess the type of bullet would make a difference, but I don't know enough about bullet specs to comment on that.
- godmode, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8c) anime-watching weeaboo
- glmory, on 10/10/2007, -1/+8Not really. Assuming the bullet didn't hit him the force absorbed by his hand would exactly equal the force of the recoil of the gun. Not an effective way to block bullets, but if by random chance a bullet hit his sword and bounced in a different direction he would be fine.
- barktwiggs, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9No, the reason Japanese swords were folded over 'dozens' of times creating thousands of layers was because they had to work out all the impurities from the ***** iron-ferrite sand. European swordmakers had such excellent ore to begin with they didn't need to work the steel over that much for their forging. Also, the 6 month forging process is actually a byproduct of post WWII legislation limiting the number of swords that can be manufactured per year. Prior to that, it wouldn't take more than a week or two to make a sword. Finally, European swords on average were not that much heavier than their asian counterparts, weighing in around 3-4 lbs on average. Any sword above 7 lbs was probably a wall hanger a nobleman got out for parades and such.
- browwiw, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9Bah. The Katana is just a Japanese bastard sword with a damn good PR agent.
- alphgeek, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7Yes, damn that smartass Isaac Newton and his pesky third law of motion.
- trogdoor, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Everything truly awesome makes the front page, so yes.
- nicholaslent, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6I don't believe you.
- moskaudancer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Dugg up for the Max Brooks reference. Personally, I prefer the "Freeman" method: Just a nice solid whack in the face with the business end of a crowbar.
- ChibiJosh, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6刀 is the kanji for sword, alone it is read as "katana," but when put together with other kanji such as 日本 (Nihon/Japan), it's read as "tou"
- DiamondIce, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Strength has nothing to do with it, it's dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
- JamesBrown, on 10/10/2007, -7/+12Also be sure to watch the Katana vs. .50 Machine Gun video
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-sHTJAKN-5k&mode=related&search= - alex7575, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6what would a coroner say when he finds 2 halves of a bullet in a person?
- NikoKun, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5The Japanese sure love The Matrix music... XD
- EvanVolm, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Another, with a REAL gun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY1YtRnwRiw - moskaudancer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6That *is* a lot more badass-sounding than "deflect".
- Lane, on 10/10/2007, -5/+9Too bad they don't collect the information upon just how much of that energy was absorbed by the sword. obviously though if someone were holding it, the results would be catastrophically different.
- joemofo214, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5nvm, bury me, forgot, it was to see if a sword can cut another sword in half, my bad
- moskaudancer, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Perhaps "Aha! He was a dumbass who tried to deflect a bullet with a sword! Everyone knows only Jedis can do that!"
- Godlesswanderer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Plus there's the fact that not all Japanese dialects are understood by all Japanese people, so sometimes subtitles are needed.
- noumuon, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4@NidStyles - the force on the bullet has to be equal to the force on the gun/shooter. it's why really high powered artillery has to be on a mounted firing mechanism.
- narcosis219, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5with PERFECT skin.
- aegis9975, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Its from the TV show "Trivia no Izumi", which tests out various "trivial" experiments. For instance, they had the trivial experiment to test if a person can run away from their own farts.
"Escaping One's Own Flatus" Summary: move sidways, its all aerodynamics.
