- drunkenirish, on 01/29/2008, -18/+123Slow news day...nothing else going on in the world...mass corruption, war in Iraq, voting fraud, scientology...sinking ketchup packets!
- IncrdibleGonads, on 01/29/2008, -2/+72Point taken.
- Mr.Gone, on 01/29/2008, -5/+63I love how it is titled "The" ketchup trick. Like I was looking through digg and all of a sudden I was like:
"Holy crap THE ketchup trick! I have been waiting literally minutes for someone to explain this paranormal phenomenon to me!"
Also it's really not a "trick" it is water pressure.
Slow news day indeed. - dtd00d, on 01/29/2008, -7/+53I love how this is from the news.
- peaceninja, on 01/29/2008, -2/+36well said
- Incomp3tnt, on 01/29/2008, -2/+34I thought that was a mark on my monitor for a moment. I actually started trying to rub it off.
- wrillo, on 01/29/2008, -1/+28i signed in at work to digg you down
- peaceninja, on 01/29/2008, -0/+25I'm assuming you really are deaf and not joking so don't bury me into Hades for not getting your joke.
A guy comes on and demonstrates to the anchor how ketchup packets can move magically through a closed water bottle using only his mind. The anchor quips "yeah we used to do the same thing with the "cartesian diver", thus stealing the guy's thunder. The guy, arguably disappointed, finishes the segment and introduces the cartesian divers (which are the rubber-ended syringes) and shows how the same principle with the ketchup packet applies to the cartesian diver. This seems something that most other diggers have seen, so the video probably serves more of a purpose to us of showing that this can work with ketchup packets in addition to the cartesian divers that i personally remember doing in grade school. As the guy explains you have to find a ketchup packet that "barely floats" in order for it to work, in the same way that you have to fill the syringe with just enough water so that it barely floats.
You can probably go on wikipedia to find cartesian divers to better understand the concept which wasn't exactly explained in the video anyway, but its just all about compressing the air in the packet so that the collective density of the packet becomes more dense than the fluid it is in. - sig331, on 01/29/2008, -4/+21So amazing that it won my 4th grade science fair!
- LongShlong, on 01/29/2008, -4/+21Hobos are probably up in arms for this flagrant display of playing with their staple food source!
- iancorey, on 01/29/2008, -4/+20WRONG! The dude pulls a hair out of his head and winds it around the ketchup and then pulls it down with the hair. Dumass.
- jeremynicolas, on 01/29/2008, -1/+17While your submissions have included 'Penis drawings LOL NSFW but funny s hell' and 'Beyonce falls and gets owned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
- po43292, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13I'm gonna score so many babes now.
- procopio, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12Because you can compress gasses, and the ketchup pack has air in it.
So you compress it, the pack becomes smaller and displaces less water.
Since the packet mass remain the same it sinks. - sgtbutterscotch, on 01/29/2008, -0/+11Your cat.
- rotorius.kool, on 01/29/2008, -4/+14This is sooo old. It's over 400 years old. seriously. bury.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_diver - CosmicJustice, on 01/29/2008, -4/+14You're an idiot.
- 80hd, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10Make sure everybody leaves first
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -4/+14Whatever, all that other stuff is depressing this is fun!
- uahgekido, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10I don't think you'll have to worry about getting thrown out of a place that uses ketchup *packets*.
- zomfg, on 01/29/2008, -2/+10front page...really?
- peaceninja, on 01/29/2008, -2/+10i dugg you up because you made me lol
- StatusQuoRules, on 01/29/2008, -2/+10How about eating the ketchup? Thats useful
- ddiggs, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8Sinking ketchup packets could kill us all!
- leerayIG88, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8I see what you did there.
- rayraym0fucka, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8You sound like a stupid whining 14 year old... why don't YOU submit some ***** that is more appropriate and let the diggs sort it out ;p
- thetipster, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7So geniuses, can anyone please explain why an increased pressure on the ketchup would cause it to sink?
- SilenceGold, on 01/29/2008, -4/+10I'm deaf. I could not understand all the babblings. Could someone type at least a paragraph explaining. Only clue I got is related to Mr. Gone's comment about water pressure. What else was being poured other than water? Help me out a bit..and do the same for the other deaf lurkers.
Quit the nonsense "I cannot hear you" comments...those got old. - georgetds, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Time and place for everything. This particular time and place is about a neat trick you can do with ketchup.
- ophello, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6the best brand is called GENERIC KETCHUP PACKETS ARE ALL THE SAME Inc.
- karel747, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6...?
- proteon, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Couldn't it just have been "A" ketchup trick? I did amateur magic as a kid - studied some growing up; never heard of "THE" ketchup trick.
Thank you for reading 'THE" Comment. - georgetds, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7All tricks can be explained one way or another, but until you do explain it, the watchers are "tricked" by what you do.
- juckman, on 01/29/2008, -3/+9Your words have brought tears to my eyes. Bravo zrcochran, Bravo.
- Dwebtron, on 01/29/2008, -5/+10i see what you did there
- loquedesea, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartesian_diver
- teh_techie, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5When the larger container is squeezed, the air inside the diver is compressed, reducing the overall displacement or buoyancy of the diver, which then sinks. One reason for using an eye dropper is that air cannot readily escape the end of the dropper, due to surface tension, however a pen cap can also be used.
Note that this experiment can also be done with a rigid bottle and a flexible cap (made of latex rubber or some other elastic or flexible material). - 883XL, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Magic, got it.
- peaceninja, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5soy sauce packets, mayonnaise packets, mustard packets. i suppose anything flexible with a tiny bit of air in it will work because that tiny bit of air inside the packet must compress.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -2/+7or is it staple food sauce
- IChazI, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5They're all the same you dim bulb...
- paulb0t, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4And that's just the page load time!
- joelcass, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Now you're taking it too far -you gotta know when to stop
- georgetds, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Yeah, McDonalds is so concerned about table behavior. Shirt and tie affair and all that. The teen that served me there the other day gave me such a disapproving look when I used the wrong fork to eat my fries.
- georgetds, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Yeah, you might want to waste less of your time online if you are concerned about losing thirty seconds of your life. Just a little hint - Digg is a great place to waste, and thereby lose time.
- ALink2ThePast, on 01/29/2008, -3/+7lame
how did this make the front page, unless the intent was to make fun of the news and not actually show us how to do the ketchup trick - georgetds, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Did you time how long it took to return to this page and leave a comment, or was that included in the three minutes?
- kajoob, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4Yes, but it is impossible to talk about two different topics in one day.
- ObeseSnake, on 01/29/2008, -0/+3I love how the news talks about this as a science they never actually explains the science behind it.
