- NightRush, on 10/12/2007, -2/+90Im not touchin it if its got a sony battery...
- CygnusX1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+35So how's high school treating you this year?
- pierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Good pal you are...
- inajeep, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30Great, now the airlines will ban disposable cameras now. /dripping with sarcasm
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27This is NOT the same as a taser. This is incredibly short in duration and much less in power. If you try this on a rapist or something, it's gonna have about as much effect as if you skipped building this and just pinched his nipple.
- RaistlinMajere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24Some friend you are!
- D3adKl0wn, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24i made one of these back in 95, i zapped my friend with it and his arm went numb for a day
- whackaxe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+21the chances of him liking his nipple being pinched are higher though.
- ChronicColonic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22What would be really cool is if the camera would still work after doing this. You could shock the victim and get a picture of them with the shocked look on their face!
- greanmunky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18i was playing around with a money clip and a cameras capacitor once, and damn does it hurt, be careful
- speedyrev, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18So now you are grown up and passing around real prison shanks.
- ShakeWell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16@AKron, *****, if all you had was a taser, and had a raving lunatic come at you with a knife with the intent to stab you, you won't shock him in self-defense?
- leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14I was modding an old digital camera (to add an external shutter release) and the shock I got was quite intense. And it was not an instantaneous spark like the video. It kept on shocking as if the cap was charging then shocking me then charging then shocking me.
It was worth it. I now have a camera that I can place anywhere and will take time lapse photos at an interval I set. Quite cool. - ThePerchik, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Chinatown in NYC always has some shady guy that will sell one to ya...
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14s8n666: I certainly hope so. You strike me as the type that probably shouldn't have kids.
- sublimethinker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You can get used disposable cameras for free from any sort of convenience store, like Walgreen's, Osco, or jewel. Then what you do is you take the capacitors and set them up in in a parallel...get 14 of those babies soldered together, a plastic case, and you've got a REAL taser then.
- djwk1928, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10You can also jump in a car and potentially die.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Real tasers are not expensive for any real reason. They work differently though, and make a high-voltage T shaped wave. This camera-flash stuff just discharges a capacitor into you, which doesn't affect your nervous system the same way. A flash capacitor can stop your heart btw, a taser is designed to use lower currents but have more effect. A real taser isn't "safe" either. The police have been using them to kill and torture people beyond the required use of force.
/end info block - MrSurly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Why not try it and find out?
[Bender points the beam at Fry's crotch]
Fry: Ow, my sperm!
Bender: Wow, neat. Mind if I try that again?
[Again at Fry's crotch]
Fry: Huh! Didn't hurt that time. - fanboydcs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I would always break them open and shock the hell out of my friends, I would say to them "Hey this thing is really cold, put your finger right here" (on two of the solder points) and I would get a good laugh while my friend would want to kick my butt. I must have been in 7th grade. Its not enough to stop someone like a real taser would, but its enough to freak someone out.
- s8n666, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Will this cause any permanent damage to my genitals if I zap myself with it?
- pyromonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I was taking apart a disposable camera a couple months ago, trying to just take the flash component out, so I could hit the button and it would flash. Sounded amusing, so I take the shell off, and get ready to hit the button to blind my friend when he walks in the door. Instead I hit something on the circuit board and zapped me. That plan backfired...
Using this as a taser would be less than effective though, you'd probably do more damage by throwing the camera at someone. - morrabrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I suspect all you'd get a picture of is a giant fist just before it hits. :)
- candiru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I doubt anyone would really make this with the mindset of defending themself. I mean, "real" Tasers are that expensive for a reason; these are tasers in that they work the same way, right?
- mb96net, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This information is very easy for anyone to access, but probably shouldn't be. Although 99% of the time a shock from this is a short term minor sting, if shocked in the wrong spot some people (even more likely if they have a pacemaker or heart problems) could go into fibrillation and potentially die (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_shock). Although it may seem like a harmless prank, this should not be used as such. Please kids, don't try this at home. Adults, please be careful if you plan on trying this ;).
- jwigum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4A "Tazer" is a brand name of a device that fires prongs into someone. Those prongs trail thin wires back to the launcher, which then runs electric current through them.
It's not a tazer unless it fires the prongs away from the device, with trailing wires.
The term he's looking for is stun gun. - D3adKl0wn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4well it was accidental.. lol..
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9No, yours would be just as safe in the blender. What are the chances a blender would cleave something the size of an atom? ; )
- peaboy55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I worked in a factory that manually reloaded these cameras with film. Really boring work, but for college money I couldn't beat it. Anyway, as a n00b at the factory you'd always shock yourself a few times. Sometimes the cameras would go nuts though flashing and charging over and over. Those were fun times.
- negativefx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3In college, we used to leave a dismantled disposable cam on the table from time to time. Any unknowning individual that picked it up got a nice surprise.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Last time I made one of these, I was in 8th grade and I zapped my friend on his leg while we were in class. He cried like a little girl and got sent to detention. It was great watching him try to blame me . . . like a prison shank I passed it around class so the teacher couldn't find it.
- ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4If you go by, like, Walgreens or CVS, you can actually request dead disposable camera bodies for free. Just tell them you're not reusing it for photographic purposes and tell them how many you need. I got about 20 that way.
- MrSurly, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@beotch
"T shaped waves"? Pretty sure electromatic waves generated by tasers don't go back in time. Perhaps you're thinking of square waves? - Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Kevin showed how to make one of these on TSS one time...or was it on Unscrewed? Anyway....I made one with some friends and we had hours of retarded fun.
Becareful though, I still have scars from where it burned me a few times. I'm not kidding. - ceralor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They won't do enough damage for a taser and take too long to recharge, anyway. And you'll need a nice supply of batteries, too. RTFA.
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"get 14 of those babies soldered together, a plastic case, and you've got a REAL taser then."
Still no. Keep trying. - nerdofnerds, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can usually get used disposable cameras from Walgreen's for free. Just tell them you need parts from em for a school project and you can get a ton of em.
- theharlotfelon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ahh... this reminds me of the time I got shocked on the back of my neck with one of those things causing me to swallow my gum and vomit a little bit. Good times! But yeah, it's definitely not 7000v, only about 350v depending on the manufacturer. I also wanted to mod one of these to put a larger capacitor, maybe at least a 1000w one, but I get lazy and I definitely had enough scars on my arm for a long time. I'm sure people could say, "How the crap are you getting scars"? With the frayed wires, the shock will cause the copper to get hot and then your skin will be cauterized. The small scars lasted almost a year... I was shocked a total of seven times, with two small scars each.
- BobTGoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This isn't a taser, it's just an electric shock. I was screwing around with a Kodak disposable camera for a class once and managed to discharge a fully charged flash battery into my hand. It hurt like hell but I imagine a taser is many times more powerful.
- ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4tdogg: the correct answer is simply "hopefully"
"Brevity is the soul of wit." - jwigum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You're kidding, right?
- tman700, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They're called air tasers...
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hey. It's a good way to practice CPR. (Joking, joking)
- cell00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Something that shocks less (but still feels), is a similar part from a push-down-lighter. Costs less too. ;)
- special4k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's actually ~300 volts, not 7kV. Feel free to use a DMM to check this. The fact is that it is unnecessary to create a higher potential for a flash (current is more important) and the electrolytic photo capacitors used are normally rated at ~330V (a breakdown voltage MUCH less than 7kV). The high voltage is used to ionize the gas in the flash tube (hence the need for the "third contact").
- N3LDAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"$7, 7 minutes, and 7000 volts"
More like $0, 1 minute, and 350v
but you know, what can I expect from people on digg? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah I have one of those (lighter shocky thing) too. It is laying on my desk. I have used it so much though that it has lost most of its shock, now you can hardly fell it...
- Neochrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Radio shack has much bigger capacitors (at list it used too), and if you know what are you doing you can form a ladder simmilar to the ones used to ionize air. Actually, to form simplest "taser" all you need is a diode, a resistor (100 kohm will do) and a capacitor, link them in series and charge capacitor in an outlet. It should hold a charge for a quite some time... (make sure that capacitor has proper voltage rating)
- Muncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dun dun dun... dun dun dun... dada dada dada dun dun dun....
That was supposed to be the Macgyver theme, by the way. - umdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I made one of these when I was about 15. I got my friend who played football in college (~270) with it and it knocked him on the floor fast.
