He settled for £5000 out of court
True story. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+142Most stores have absolutly no security at all.
Back in the days when xbox 360 was first released I would buy them then scalp on ebay. I went to target and bought 3 xbox 360s (they are at the back of the store in an electronics section, for those who don't know). You can have the option of paying for them there, or at the front of the store.
I walked out of the store with three 360s and the alarm went off, somebody inside the store asked "Hey did you pay for that" and I ignored them and kept on walking. They didn't try to stop me or follow at all. I could have stolen them, no hassle at all. - longboarder543, on 10/12/2007, -1/+109Having worked as undercover security for Target for 2 years, and having apprehended many, many people doing just this sort of thing, I can tell you that if you were able to physically handle an Xbox360 or any other lockup merchandise before you purchased it, that Target store was breaking store regulations. Also, just some friendly advice, while I cant speak for other retailers, I do know that Target has top of the line security equipment, including covert cameras all over the store. You are virtually always on camera -- customers, employees, everyone. And store security is well trained and does not just lie down during a theft attempt, as some would have you believe. And yes, there are undercover security guards at every Target store, so next time you're in one, go into electronics, grab a bunch of cd's or dvd's real quick, and then act suspicious, and look over your shoulder. Chances are they'll be someone in plain clothes watching you. (then put the merchandise back of course)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+122NICE. This is how I would do it.
First - Invisibility - Make 3 LED throwies. Throw one at each security camera to short out the tapes.
Second - Distraction - Get a partner to "trip and fall" and act like s/he is in pain. This will cause all or most of the employees to become distracted.
Third - The two-stage grab - Stage one: Close the cover of the target laptop and look at the top intently to show passerbys that you are just looking at the top. Stage Two: When no passerbys are looking, grab and stash the laptop. Then run over to the croud around your partner, which will be the cue to him/her to say "I think I can walk now" and then you say "Here, let me walk you out..." - GazP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+103Its looks like a family owned computer store. An im sure most people who know anything about computers, knows how easy it is to set up a webcam?
Its probably just 3 webcams hooked up to a PC with a large harddrive, constantly recording video. Hence the reasonable framerate, not your normal timelapse cctv. Very cheap and effective CCTV setup, probably costs less than a decent B&W setup! - eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -7/+108Get me Clouseau!
- abusive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+103It is different angles of the same event. But still... wow. You are right, that did take some serious balls.
- alexp2ad, on 10/12/2007, -0/+99Dugg. Mainly for the way that you decided the best topic for this video wasn't comedy videos but.... Educational Videos! Genius.
- rekrapt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+94Unreal. That takes some serious balls... looks like he stole two. Or was it just different angles of the same event?
- DarkJedi375, on 10/12/2007, -3/+88"Second - Distraction - Get a partner to "trip and fall" and act like s/he is in pain. This will cause all or most of the employees to become distracted."
Nice try...
I work at Circuit City. You're lucky if you have ONE employee offer you assistance if you trip over your own feet. We're heartless bastards. =) - Harry, on 10/12/2007, -1/+75This comment makes my brain hurt...

Stealing from Walmart is stupid...
When you steal from a store, you want to brag to your friends in the Thieves Guild...
"I stole that $899 laptop from Walmart!!!"
"Well, I stole the same laptop from Target for $999! I steal better than you!!!! - ScottJG, on 10/12/2007, -3/+70Where did you learn this stuff?
- s-m-a-c-k, on 10/12/2007, -4/+67perhaps they should educate the employees on customer service... or at least "watch out for homeless people"... lol
- strcmp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+62That was some heinous crime you just confessed.
- scyform, on 10/12/2007, -0/+60.....what?
- SonicRift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+56So the laptops weren't secured to the showfloor. No locks, no alarms.
The man's face is fairly clear in the footage.
And after the robbery, the store decided to set the video to the pink panther theme and stick it on the internet as an educational video?
And the search tags on the video include "owned" and "homosexuality"?
Something doesn't add up here... - sinfony, on 10/12/2007, -0/+52Because, of course, nobody would see you knocking out security cameras. Especially not the cameras, which are probably not recording locally. Good luck with that one though.
- Roger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+54Does anyone really care about his balls?
- titlesaysitall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+52You know, there was this great thing invented that secured your items to another thing for security puprposes, can't think of the name off the top of my head but it uses a key or a combination and are usually cheap, hmm, wonder what it could be.
- thesparrowband, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51hows the LED thing work?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51Crimewatch!
- bebop717, on 10/12/2007, -0/+46The store was just plain stupid for not locking up the laptops to the tables.
- all2hectic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+45this must be one of few homeless people with a cell phone.
i would bank on under paid philosophy professor or something like that. - lagnut, on 10/12/2007, -4/+47He forgot to steal the AC Recharger. Have fun with your stolen laptop after 7 hours.
- liveforever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+41You just throw magnets at the camera? I don't understand how that would short it out.
- apotropaic, on 10/12/2007, -5/+43Uhhh.. I've been held against my will at a walmart before like 2 years ago. Sure they thought I stole something and I happened to have a backpack on... lol. But after emptying my backback and questioning me they realized they had made a mistake and thought nothing of it either!
BTW... did you know walmart security is UNDERCOVER?! Yea at first you think its just a strange coincidence that you see them all the time in the store but then when they stop you and pull you to the security room you realize that they are walmart security. Kind of a funny story actually.
So you really think I could sue them, or I guess could have sued over this matter, since it was 2 years ago. - thewebguy, on 10/12/2007, -7/+45old balls..
- buddyfarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+37nope. that is real. there is a computer store near me that has color security cams like that. very good footage. what I don't understand is if a mom and pop shop can put in something like that why the hell can't a bank? I mean, every time you see their footage on tv trying to catch a bank robber it is so grainy and blurry and black and white like they were taking proof of bigfoot pics or something...wtf is up with that??
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+36How many ways can you mangle the words Their, There and They're? You used them three times, and every time you used them incorrectly.
- harrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34"most importantly walking out with a cool demeanor"
especially the "cell phone call" just as he begins to step out. As if he's not stealing a laptop, but being courteous by taking his call outside. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+34Magnets are quite useless against most modern technology. I read an article where this tech guy claimed that for a magnet to erase your data it would have to be strong enough to pull the iron out of your skin
which sounds pretty reasonable, who's the last person you know who had a magnet break their cell phone or whatever? - boscord, on 10/12/2007, -1/+34I would probably steal (or pay alot) for any laptop that got me a solid 7 hours of battery life.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32"Make 3 LED throwies. Throw one at each security camera to short out the tapes."
Good luck Batman. Throwing three LED throwies at each security camera would be way more difficult than snatching the laptop itself. Especially if anyones actually watching these cameras. And ESPECIALLY since I don't think a LED throwie would affect a camera other than providing a tiny bit of glare, and only then if thrown PERFECTLY.
If you're going to be that blatant you might as well just use a smokescreen. - spitfire6006006, on 10/12/2007, -5/+36o, no! your pants were inside-out? WHAT HAS THIS WORLD COME TO!?!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+33The camera did not shoot in letter box. No camera does. Letter box happens when the aspect ratio that the camera shot in is different than the output device (television or flash player on google video).
- theblooms, on 10/12/2007, -19/+49I hope they busted that POS in the ass for that one. God I hate a thief.
- Pattyo13, on 05/14/2009, -5/+31I'm sure he was feeling like a real hardass until he realized it was a dell and started a small fire in his jacket
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -3/+29Kensington lock?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24This is not much of a "How to" more like "watch this dude steal a laptop."
- kalmi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Scott: He has been watching too much movies...
But anyway he is right. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+34It isn't that hard to figure out. It's based on 3 things: Invisibility (prevents you from being recorded), Distraction (Prevents you from being noticed by people), and the Grab (getting the labtop without people outside noticing).
Sparrow: The magnets mess up the cameras. Magnets + technology = Zap! - ActiveMatx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23I doubht they find him. My credit card got stolen in broad-day light exact same way. we got the guy on camera and everything. full face shot. i also live in hawaii (much smaller than mainland), and they have no leads on the guy. face on camera means nothing in the big cities.
All face does is help prove you guilty once they find you. however, they cant find you until your caught,. - robotexplorer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+24most importantly walking out with a cool demeanor
- av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26Have fun buying the charger separately for way less than a full laptop package? I'll take that deal any day.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -15/+38@ Fierce Diety
Actually, I do believe he or she is correct. Stores such as Best Buy can not stop you because they don't actually own the building, they lease it. They can call the police on you but they can not hold you against your will. If they do, you have a solid ground for a lawsuit and companies such as Best Buy very often settle. Fact of the matter is that all these companies lease the property, very few own the building, therefore different laws apply. Unlike you shooting someone trying to steal from your house, that's trespassing.
I'm just using Best Buy since I have heard and read countless examples of people suing them successfully, and I used to work for them and no they can't really hold you or do anything unless the manager actually saw you steal something.
I think that BestBuySux.org may have more concrete examples of the theft law and what these companies can and can not do. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23He should have used a cardboard box.
- jonj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22that's a bit of a leap. he's a clever criminal; i'm sure he can figure out how to put a windows CD into the drive and choose "clean installation"
