- HydroSliders, on 10/14/2007, -6/+63I love puppies... but forcing a dog to be pregnant its entire adult life? thats cruel.
- emanpa68, on 10/16/2007, -8/+61Why would anyone buy an animal, it makes me sick... go to a shelter, eventually you'll find a nice pet.
- Tomboys, on 10/14/2007, -12/+47Please keep this alive by digging it. The more people that know what goes on the sooner the abuse can stop!
- achimpanzee, on 10/14/2007, -5/+29Let's stop most humans from breeding while we're at it.
Puppies FTW! - Aphelion, on 10/14/2007, -13/+37I thought that said stop puppy Mii's as in the Mii's on a Wii... I was very disappointed
- RadiatedAnt, on 10/14/2007, -7/+30Who then will grind my flour?!
- MrZeek, on 10/14/2007, -4/+24Seriously when you buy a puppy, God kills a…. puppy?
- bossm4n, on 10/14/2007, -2/+21Thousands of wonderful dogs and cats are euthanized every day because irresponsible owners have not taken the necessary steps to spay or neuter their pets. Shelters are overrun and unless they have a no kill policy, they must destroy these animals unless they are adopted. Not only can you help by never buying a cat or dog, but help keep strays off the streets by rescuing them yourself or calling someone who can.
- Mortiffer, on 10/14/2007, -2/+21well i guess ***** every one that buys dogs just because their cute, if you want a dog you can go to a kennel and save a life
- wispygalaxy, on 10/14/2007, -1/+20I know! They put shelter dogs to sleep while breeding too many of them at mills. That is wrong.
- crestfall, on 10/14/2007, -4/+22My last boss just HAD to have a pure-bred teacup poodle. It was shipped to her on a plane. Meanwhile, her neighborhood is full of abandoned dogs, living on the street. I got my cat from the street. His neighbors moved and left him. He is the most loving pet I have ever had.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -4/+17Great article.
- davidrools, on 10/14/2007, -4/+16yes don't ever buy from a pet store. If you must have a puppy, get one from a breeder who actually cares about where that puppy will live and wants it to be cared for. Best bet is a shelter, though.
- kimbellina, on 10/14/2007, -4/+15This is all done by the Amish. I've been to Lancaster, PA quite a few times on vacations (my parents are pretty lame), and you see the signs for it everywhere.
In front of every barn is a list of about 10 different breeds for sale. If you ask to see any of the puppies, they'll bring one out, and it's always sickly and obviously uncared for. If you ask to look around, they will never let you.
Look through that video. You'll see that all the farmers in there dressed as if it's 1699... that's them.
My family used to go there every year, but now we refuse to give them our money because of what they do to these dogs. - timdorr, on 10/14/2007, -1/+11Having gotten 3 dogs from the humane society location here in Atlanta, I can say that shelter dogs are the way to go. It's cheap, you're giving an animal a home, and you're supporting the other dogs there via your payment. Plus, they often have good support services, such as training and vets. It's the best for everyone.
- Dylson, on 10/14/2007, -3/+12Man, those poor dogs. I hate the thought of animal cruelty. People suck.
- dvsbastard, on 10/14/2007, -4/+12"Some men hunt for sport, others hunt for food. The only thing I'm hunting for, is an outfit that looks good... etc... etc... etc"
- stinkypyper, on 10/14/2007, -1/+8My late great uncle bred champion dogs, ran a high class grooming shop, and was a dog expert; he always said if you are going to get a dog buy it directly from a breeder or rescue one from the pound, never ever buy a dog from a pet store because they can't prove to you what conditions it was raised in.
My last dog came from a great breeder. We went to her farm in the country where she bred her dogs, it was a beautiful, clean, well run kennel. The dogs got to go for daily runs in the country and we were able to meet the parents and grandparents of the dog. The dog itself was healthy and lived five years longer then the breed normally does. We had to prove to her that we were willing to take care of this dog and that it wasn't puppy love. We ended up paying a third of the price of what a pet store charges for the same breed.
If you want to get a puppy purchase a dog breeder catalogue, they will list all the breeders in your area. Make sure you drive out there and inspect the place, this is the best way to stop puppy mills. Be aware you may have to wait for a litter, but hey, their living things, not commodities to be displayed in a window. - Zandarrr, on 10/14/2007, -4/+10Adopt. Don't shop.
- eatbeefjerky, on 10/14/2007, -3/+8Breeders != puppy mills, idiot. Know WHY so many animals are killed by the pound? Because retards who think having a puppy is going to be all sunshine and roses go to the pet store and buy a puppy for their 5 year old, then they realize having an animal requires EFFORT and also WORK, which they do not care for. Then they take said dog (now grown up and not as cute anymore) to the pound where it unfortunately will probably be euthanized.
- eatbeefjerky, on 10/14/2007, -1/+6All of my family's pets have been unwanted, came from the humane society, or previously belonged to people who could not keep them any longer... and that doesn't just mean dogs. We've had 4 cats, 4 birds, and 2 dogs.
- Typhoon2009, on 10/14/2007, -3/+8***** puppy mills and animal abusers. I'm sure this article will fall into the back parts of Digg as people care more about the latest iPod more than this.
I gotta say, either buy from a reputable breeder or rescue an animal at the shelter. If you want a specific breed, a quick Google search can help you find rescue leagues for that breed. - wilf_brim, on 10/14/2007, -3/+8This will make you sick. If you are a glutton for punishment, try searching YouTube on "puppy mills". That will be enough to make you lose your appetite for a day or two.
A brief good story. My av is my Pomeranian, Starbuck. My stupid ex bought him from a pet store. He was a puppy mill dog. Somehow (and I expect it was due to some of the staff at the store that took pity on him and cared for him) he turned out mostly ok. He was very, very hard to train (because he was never taken out, and just went where ever). Don't ever, ever, ever buy from a pet store. If you must have a pure bred, buy from a local breeder where you can go and visit. Or how about this. There are rescue society for almost every breed. Try one of them. Or do what I did. I have two rescued greyhounds. Purebred dogs, and a wonder of nature (they race in my backyard, top speed = 35 mph). - crestfall, on 10/14/2007, -2/+7scratch that. It was a teacup Chihuahua. You know, the kind rich blond bimbos carry in their purses
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -5/+9I totally agree. Seems like every month or so I'mseeing news reports about this... and that's just in my area!
- knobtwiddler, on 10/14/2007, -2/+6all of mine have been strays, i'm proud to say.
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -3/+7Stop the evil chick mills! chickens are kept in little boxes and made to lay eggs all their lives. chickens are at least as smart as a carrot. they know whats going down!
- pepemt, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4I was AMAZED by how many Amish I saw in that video...
- heathuff23, on 10/14/2007, -6/+10OK Mr. Vick, we all know your going to the big house for killing dogs and you are trying everything you can to reduce your sentence; but creating a digg account and submitting a story like this is NOT going to prevent you from taking it up the pooper!
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -4/+7I need puppies to make up for all those kittens I've killed.
- mrmacky, on 10/14/2007, -5/+8New meaning to the term puppy chow?
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -2/+5I hope it gets out and your cat kills it. Those dogs are pure evil compressed into the smallest form possible.
- bytor4232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dug parent up! Great quote, great episode.
- noumuon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4people just don't appreciate a relevant simpsons quote...
- OneZeroZeroOne, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3How funny would it be to pull some Planet of the Apes ***** at one of these auctions?
Just storm in with about 20 or 30 of your buddies in riot gear. Round every last one of those ***** up and stuff their backwards asses into some 4'x5' cages for a couple days. Then auction them off to some Columbian druglords.
"This one's got a great beard! Got his whole life left in front of him to build furniture for you!" - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4pretty much like humans then. unfortunately we have the disadvantage of all being bred from some guy and his own rib.
- Tomboys, on 10/13/2007, -1/+4Man it is so amazing to see a greyhounds that runs because he wants to. I love people who rescue them Such a forgiving breed.
If you can ever read the book "Dogs Never Lie About Love" do so. they talk a bit about them in there. - bossm4n, on 10/13/2007, -3/+5 You have absolutely no clue about what you just typed. You are correct in saying that animals must be killed by local pounds and even the Humane Society and PETA, but you're not seeing the big picture. There is a massive, out-of-control problem with pet over population. Why, because stupid people buy cute puppies and kittens from greedy breeders. Not only are these breeders adding to the population problem by putting more animals in circulation, but because most of them breed and sell purebreds, those puppies and kittens often suffer from genetic birth defects from the ridiculous inbreeding occurring at those puppy mills.
This is far from propaganda. I've pulled hundreds of strays off the streets, I've worked with local independent rescue groups and large shelters like the SPCA and Human Society for years. I've never walked into the SPCA and not seen it full to capacity. It's no different with other shelters. There are simply more strays than they can rescue. In addition, strays that come into many shelters that are sick or injured are destroyed either because they cannot be saved or the shelter cannot afford treatment.
And for trying make a point by saying sex with other dogs is a benefit just proves what an unbelievable monkey humping, douche lord you are. - bonk2k, on 10/14/2007, -3/+5Missouri is riddled with puppy mills. Its disgusting. Just driving by one and hearing the barking and howling sends shivers down my spine.
- Xyleene, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3A much more rational article.... http://www.canismajor.com/dog/puppymil.html
- crestfall, on 10/14/2007, -4/+6You are an idiot.
- jimmiss, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2Help what you can. Just because you can't save everyone and everything doesn't mean you shouldn't try to help anyone or anything.
- Dylson, on 10/14/2007, -2/+4EVERYONE hates him!
- CaptainAm3rica, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My dog came from a crazy guy that was running a type of puppy mill. When we got her, she was caked in poop, infected with fleas and worms, and ate her own feces all the time because she hardly got any food. After a few sleepless nights, numerous vet visits, and people donating supplies and medicine to her, she finally turned around and is normal. Now, she is a very loyal, loving, good dog that has a very deep trust with me that I've built since she was a pup. BTW, she's really cute too --> http://tinyurl.com/23cqw6
- inactive, on 10/14/2007, -3/+4PETA is another name for slime!
- Typhoon2009, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The fees are because, guess what, they have to take care of the animals that are in their shelter. The interview is so that they can be assured that the creature will be going to a better home, where the owner will give it more care and love than its previous owner.
- kenben, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2AKC purebreds dont come from puppy mills. Breeders are generally required to adhere to a strict code of ethics in order to be members of kennel clubs. Just buy from reputable breeders, or rescue a purebred if you want one.
- alexanEmpire, on 10/14/2007, -1/+2Is there a youtube to this?
- ZenMojo, on 10/14/2007, -6/+7I'm worried more about the rising cost of puppy-flour biscuits.
- EvilFerret, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1As sad as it is, this is the sad truth of the pet industry as a whole. Marshall Farms for example is well known for it's ferrets. People would much rather buy a Marshall ferret that's guaranteed to live for at least a year (so long as you feed it Marshall food), rather than buying from an independent breeder who may give you a 7 day guarantee. Sure people could boycott Marshall ferrets, but unless the vast majority got together and demanded changes in their breeding conditions.....nothing is going to be effected. I believe after 6 months if a ferret is not sold it is supposed to be sent back to Marshall to be terminated (may be a year, can't remember now). It's not the ferrets (or any dog/cat ect) fault for being breed the way they were....
I just honestly don't see how something like this could be stopped. -
