- ScornForSega, on 10/12/2007, -26/+213Cocaine's a hell of a drug.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -6/+85The inability to speak well also doesn't exclude you from being smart.
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+77I remember seeing GWB speak at an RNC convention back in the 90's. I think it was back when Dole was running against Clinton. He was absolutely amazing. I was blown away by his speaking ability and I was sitting there thinking, "Why isn't this guy running instead of Dole?"
The GWB in the White House right now is not the same guy. Something is seriously wrong with him. I once read an article by a doctor who claims that GWB is showing signs of Alzheimer's. It would be sad, but it sure looks like something bad is going on. - dagnabbit, on 10/12/2007, -22/+83A fluent linguist? I'm more of a cunning linguist myself.
- masgrada, on 10/12/2007, -19/+79Behold... Alzheimer's? Supranuclear Palsy? Hard drugs?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -22/+80Agree. I saw him do a speach/discussion about business in America at Intel last year and dude was spot on. It was to a non-hostile audience and it wasn't nationally televised.
- quik22, on 10/12/2007, -65/+109it's what happens when someone is forced to be OVERLY-politically correct. anything the guy says is taken out of context and spin to fit the needs of whoever is doing the reporting. GWB would dominate 99% of the people on digg in an uncensored non-PC debate.. and everyone here knows this is true.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -24/+65I don't think it's alcoholism or drugs. I think he's got a slow on-set of Alzheimer's. The same thing happened to Reagan, and it was strikingly similar. When I heard Reagan say in a speech one time (I kid you not about this) that the Russians were trying to steal Christmas from us, that's what really made me take notice.
- Angostura, on 10/12/2007, -8/+47It could be something clinical, it could be the natural effects of 10 years coupled with stress and insufficient sleep. I know I've stood up on a podium when jetlagged and completely mangled a presentation.
I dislike the guy heartily, I very much hope it isn't pre-senile dementia. - americamatrix, on 10/12/2007, -39/+77@quik22 - "GWB would dominate 99% of the people on digg in an uncensored non-PC debate.. and everyone here knows this is true."
@h4x0r1ng - "I saw him do a speach/discussion about business in America at Intel last year and dude was spot on."
It's nice to see people with common sense, here on digg. Those comments were a breathe of fresh air, to be honest, so thanks for that :)
Cheers, quik22 & h4x0r1ng - Casework, on 10/12/2007, -5/+40It's very possible. Something a professor brought up in a class a couple weeks ago... George W. Bush was a fighter pilot. Stupid people aren't fighter pilots. He's a very bright guy, just not a good president by most people's standards.
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -9/+43If alcohol caused this, I wouldn't be able to talk by now, so I call BS.
- Mitchl, on 10/12/2007, -16/+50Well I voted for the guy twice, and held my nose doing it the second time. But he has been pissing me off for some time and his linguistic skills were maddening.
But then last Wednesday, after the election, in the nearly 1 hour press conference, I saw him, and he was like a new dude. I think that the problem of Cheney and Rummy as well as the other Republican leadership was wearing on him too. It looked to me that he almost looked relieved from the election, and that he seemed more comfortable and fluent in his speech than he has in a long time. - Silencer7, on 10/12/2007, -6/+32"The Bush Dyslexicon" had a bit to say on this as well, primarily that he's fairly lucid on things that he feels strongly about, like violence and the use of force. Verbal flubs like "I know how hard it is...to put food on your family" come off lazily, because he honestly doesn't know, and doesn't care. It's just not one of his priorities.
- crawfishsoul, on 10/12/2007, -41/+67Long-Term Cocaine Effects
As cocaine abuse continues and tolerance builds, users begin to experience long-term cocaine effects. Cocaine is a highly addicting drug, which can lead to enormous medical complications, including heart disease, respiratory failure, strokes, seizures and various gastrointestinal complications. Other physical effects are convulsions, nausea, blurred vision, chest pain, fever, muscle spasms and coma, as well as the following:
· Addiction
· Irritability
· Restlessness
· Mood Disturbances
· Paranoia
· Auditory Hallucinations
LOL, couldn't resist.
[edit] Sorry, forgot to source: http://www.cocaine-effects.net/ - ThrasherC, on 10/12/2007, -5/+31The presidency has historically been extremely detrimental to the health of every person who has held the office. Unfortunately I don't have a link right now, but I have seen before and after photos of presidents, and they almost always look like they aged 20+ years while in office.
Being president of the US is an extremely stressful and sleep-depriving job that can push a person way beyond what they are capable of handling. I think that this video illustrates the effects of this. - eean, on 10/12/2007, -17/+40ORLY
- aliengoods, on 10/12/2007, -7/+29sole-less?
Is that a reference to his shoes? Or did you mean soulless (having no soul or no greatness or warmth of mind or feeling, according to Webster online). Its not even hyphenated.
I hope your education afforded you critical thinking skills so you can judge candidates and politicians by something other than party lines, because its obvious you haven't gained an understanding of effective rhetoric. - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -38/+60Could it be that all this crap to deal with as president has really worn him out?
I'd love to see anyone try to do his job and not come out worse for wear. - iTorrey, on 10/12/2007, -20/+41This is because it's an ACT! He isn't a Texan anymore than Hillary is a New Yorker. Nor is he President anymore than the Easter Bunny is. Our politics is no more real than WWF wrestling (or whatever they call it these days). The bumbling fool is his character. If people think he's just an idiot they will have a hard time believing the mater plan of all out tyranny, which if you've read through Patriot Act, Patriot Act II, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, the John Warner National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2007, you'd know that that is exactly what is happening.. oh but "Bush is too stupid..." is what we hear from those freedom loving Americans.
Grab some popcorn because this is one really terrifying show they are putting on. - commongiga, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21I'm taking a class right now on persuasoin and propaganda, and we talked about this extensively. My professor was talking about a "plain folks" technique when trying to win mass appeal. Bush purposely dumbs himself down to appear as more of a man of the people, instead of a rich boy who went to Yale. It really helped create a stark difference between himself and John Kerry, who was more of the stereotypical rich Yale boy.
It works, and it's part of the reason he's a 2 term president. - endtime, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29I don't know about you guys, but I'd pretty damn nervous if I knew the entire world was listening to every word I said. It wouldn't help if half the country made it as obvious as possible that they not only disagreed with me, but hated me and were ashamed to have me as a fellow American, to the extent that a "mockumentary" smearing me was the most popular movie in the country. Add all that to the stress of being POTUS and I'd be a worse public speaker too.
- ucg1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+20Now we know the real reason Rumsfield was removed... Bush finally found out about the Rumsfield-aspartame connection.
- DoubtingThomas, on 10/12/2007, -17/+34You sir, might be a cunnning linguist. I am, however, a master debater.
/bam dump, ching - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+34The ability to speak well doesn't exclude you from being an idiot.
- DaysInTheDark, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18Marked as inaccurate.
No one knows the situations here.
A). When running for governor, he had more time to prepare and memorize for speeches. He wasn't making speeches every single day like he is now.
B). There are examples of speeches now, I can think of several off the top of my head (right after the election, his MLK Jr. speech) where he did not stumble once and was very articulate. Also, I'm sure someone could dig up a video of him ***** up during a speech as Governor as Texas, it's just that the author of this video didn't want to.
Just because the video has some conspiracy music playing behind an old dude's voice doesn't make it accurate. - dodoporridge, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17"You can't have Christmas without nutmeg. "
This is an important assertion that I don't think anyone is taking seriously. I mean, CAN you have Christmas without nutmeg? I don't think so! And frankly everywhere I look I see the liberal eleet trying to elimenate nutmeg. Look in the stores--you see cinamon everywhere. Cinamon candles, cinamon brooms, cinamon mop wigs--but NO NUTMEG! And have you notice that noone puts nutmeg on there egg nog any more???? Its a conspiracy and you liberals need to wake up and see whose really trying to steal Christmas! Its not the grinch, its John Kerry and his liberal freinds. - weddle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Yet he beat the last two best candidates that the Democrats could come up with....
- HoboMaster, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15If the presidency was as easily bought as you seem to imagine, we'd have some real nuts in the office, not the small-time idiots we've got now.
- hifiDesign, on 10/12/2007, -6/+17I don't know what's worse — a deteriorating mental state or the fact that he could be so detached from the world the rest of live in...
I've got one thing to say — if a crazy man is going to lead us, then let it be Walken in 2008! - Misanthrope, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19Wouldn't it be cool if putting "ORLY?" in front of anything made it funny?
- airship, on 10/12/2007, -2/+121 in 10 people is allergic to aspertame. I am. It acts like speed for me. Two cans of Diet Coke is enough to wire me for 8 hours. It's not a pleasant feeling. Needless to say, though this was revealed in testing, it was pushed through the FDA anyway.
- Neiby, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14He used to be a phenomenal speaker. He most definitely did not stumble his way through sentences like he does now. He used to be quick on his feet and clear-headed. It was obvious that when he spoke, he knew where he was going. That can't be said of him now. Most of the time he doesn't appear to know how to end a sentence once he begins it.
- bcardarella, on 10/12/2007, -19/+27I wouldn't go so far as to call him "smart". However, he has smart people around him, immoral and corrupt but very smart.
- lacroixdp, on 10/12/2007, -20/+29@blahblah
I take it then you can prove without a doubt that the Earth, for the last few billion of years, has NEVER globally warmed, or globally cooled, as a natural trend? I suppose you also think that recycling is good for the environment, eh? AND I'm sure you believe that Bush is a moron too! Jeez... it's sad how sophomoric Digg has become... every 16yo hops on here and profusely proclaims how they have divine insight into scientific and political matters and that everybody that disagrees with his/her point of view or anybody that voted Republican is a moron. Please give yourself a humbling reality check... not everyone is as dumb as you'd like to believe. There are solid reasons why I vote Republican, and there are solid reasons I like Bush. Believe it or not, there are also solid facts behind the scientific bodies that question global warming too! I too, also possess the rare and exotic talent called literacy, as do many others that differ with your point of view. - iTorrey, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13"anti-illegal immigrant enforcement, and respect for the second amendment."
Umm.. Bush supported the Assault Weapons Ban
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=32074
And as far as illegal immigration, tell me all about how Bush is stopping it when he is on board with the NAFTA Super Highway and SPP which will tear this country apart.
This is theatre! Bush is NOT a conservative by ANY stretch of the imagination. Saying he is a conservative is like saying I can grow wings and fly. - gronne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Now he has to wait for Rove to tell him what to say in his ear piece. The delay trips him up.
- clownguyx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They say he used to drink and doesn't anymore. Maybe he was just a little more relaxed back then.
You also have to choose your words more carefully as a president and can't speak quite a freely since everything you say is under a microscope. - rmxz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12skyshock21: that Reagan quote you mentioned about "the Russians were trying to steal Christmas from us" is actually Reagan quoting a US serviceman who fought in the invasion of Grenada. The full quote is even odder -- something very close to: "Grenada produces [X]% of the world's nutmeg. You can't have Christmas without nutmeg. The Russians were trying to steal Christmas". You can find the full quote with more context in Reagan's autobiography.
It's a bit odd that Reagan quoted it - but even scarier that our military guys think that way - no wonder we end up in quagmires in Iraq. - DavidYeah, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11I watched all three '04 presidential debates and it struck me that his speech abilities were different every time. In the first one, we got bumbling Bush. In the second, we got rant-'n-rave Bush with flawless speaking abilities. In the third, it was somewhere in between.
I admit, I didn't WTFV because I'm at work where video sites are banned, but whatever "reasoning" is behind it is probably nonsense. Perhaps he just has good days and bad days just like everyone else. - quik22, on 10/12/2007, -15/+23@ Silencer
kerry didn't know his ass from his elbow. - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Being the President is hard. No matter what you say, people are going to attack you about it. And they are going to blame the downfall of a nation all on you, no matter what you say. Even if the nation isn't crumbling, people say it is, so then they can blame it on you.
- cvelusc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I'm curious if they just caught former-Bush on a good day. Would really need to cross-reference all his prior speeches and determine if he bumbles along the same way as he does now.
- muikano, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8no one wants to be led by a leader dumber than themselves. No one. That's just your cynicism speaking to you. It's only in poor neighborhoods that smart kids are punished. In upper scale private schools, intelligence goes hand in hand with athletic ability.
- BigManOnCampus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8"Too many OBGYN's are not being allowed to practice their love on the women of America!"
Classic... omg... I cannot stop laughing. - skankyBacon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Look at all the flak he takes for his lack of speaking proficiency. Why would you keep that "act" up? Certainly he is hurt by it a lot more than he is helped.
I think he is a lot smarter than most people will admit (or realize due to his verbal performance), but I don't think it's a matter of him faking it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+23Kerry is a sole-less robot.
- hifiDesign, on 10/12/2007, -9/+16Can you say Manchurian candidate?
- blankman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's called Broca's Aphasia (also called Expressive Aphasia).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expressive_aphasia - Djerrid, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@endtime
Ok, let's see if I can end this meme. Bush isn't under any more pressure than any of our other presidents. Could you give me some examples of other presidents whose verbal abilities have deteriorated as spectacularly? -
