- countmandible, on 11/15/2007, -1/+40I got kind of sad when the guy kicked it.
- ThetaDot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+38The parts where it was kicked/shoved and recovers is EXTREMELY impressive / amazing.
- ikrit2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+33@Spoonicus
That explains why everyone loves R2-D2 and thinks C-3PO is annoying. - Spoonicus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30does look pretty strange.. have a look at this article, it explains why we feel the way we do when we see stuff like this.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley - lostspyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27oddly, I did too. It just looked so determined to get back up, like a small defenseless animal trying to eat.
- iDragonFly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23I have to admit that as I watched the 4 legged transport robot being kicked, I actually felt uncomfortable.
Kind of like one would feel when witnessing a child or a dog being harassed by a schoolyard bully.
It felt weird and I had to keep reminding myself that it was just a machine.
I wasn't going to admit to this until I read the info regarding the 'uncanny valley', which I'd not heard of until now.
If the 'uncanny valley' is nothing more than a myth, then I've just embarrassed myself. - Reap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18I don't know about you, but I think it's kind of amazing that humans can walk on two legs at all; honestly, four does seem to work quite a bit better- more stability, more redundancy, faster....
How many dogs do you know of that can walk after losing a leg (so they have only three)? How many humans (without prosthetics)?
How many two legged animals do you know that can sprint at 60 MPH or w/e a cheetah can run?
Having dextrus limbs is cool and all, but wouldn't it be nice to have the best of both worlds? Centaur FTW! :) - SR388, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17You get those Pink Robots, Yoshimi..
- lostspyder, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15To quote a YouTubian, who so eloquently wrote:
"It is about damn time." - bobfuller30004, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Me too. Not just when it was kicked though. During the whole video I felt sympathy towards this sad, lonely machine...
- dimsum05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Now why can't ASIMO walk like that?
- ersatzphi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13junkyarddawg,
I don't think you're getting the idea behind the uncanny valley.Neither of those examples you just cited are related to this theory. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Wow. Because a continuous loud buzzing noise from the robot is SO much better than The Flaming Lips.
/sarcasm - mbradbury, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I sort of felt sorry for it when it got kicked.
- aywwts4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Uh, that CGI image does creep me out actually. Its really quite disturbing looking.
which side are you on?
I really love people who try and claim the uncanny valley is a myth, when its something you can easily feel and experience for yourself, not some academic thing you need to read about and study. Everyone has a different tolerance for it, and I'm sure some people may never experience it, but to say it doesn't exist is preposterous, I experienced it in milliseconds.. - ch33sehead, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Dugg for the Flaming Lips song. Well, that and the cool robot.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11She's taking lots of vitamins you know.
I know she can beat them. - inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10> I really love people who try and claim the uncanny valley is a myth,

I agree. My wife recently bought The Polar Express DVD and commented to me that our four-year-old son didn't seem to like it much despite being crazy about trains. I caught part of the movie tonight on TV and found the characters very disturbing. I mentioned it to my wife who agreed and said it may be why our son didn't like the movie.
Funny that I stumbled across this topic tonight. That effect has been on my mind all night but I had no idea there was a real name for it. And it's definitely real. You are absolutely right that you can experience it for yourself easily enough. There is just a certain threshold where the realism in CGI works against itself, but since it's psychological, there's a good chance that some people just don't experience it as strongly as others. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8If I had one, I'd crank it up to maximum speed and ride it around the neighborhood.
4 legged zomg-bot > ATV - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The uncanny valley doesn't just apply to looks, it applies to the way things move too. If that CGI guy started talking but his eyes didn't squint and shift appropriately or the muscles around his mouth didn't flex just right, it would look weird.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Kind of puts that robot that couldn't go up the stairs to shame doesn't it?
- toosas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9good for you
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Junkyarddawg:
Instead of acting like a big tough guy who doesn't get creeped out by anything, why don't you actually have a read of the linked article?
You have absolutely no understanding of what the idea is, yet you boldy proclaim "The uncanny valley is a myth!"
Definitely some of the boldest idiocy I've ever seen on Digg. - Bishoco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7"Rogue Group, use your harpoons and tow cables. Go for the legs. It might be our only chance of stopping them."
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7thats why he said centuar ftw
4 horse legs and 2 peoples arms - Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Looks kind of like the walking patrol tanks from MGS4.
- cmfrolick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7@Junkyarddawg
Pixar has said that they purposely animate humans with caricature or cartoony features, because if they try to make them look too real, they test very badly. That is what they are talking about, people stop identifying with them, there becomes something uneasy or unsettling, *like* looking at a reanimated corpse, which to my interpretation, is being used as a descriptive example. You are taking this far too literally. - imikedaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The song is called "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, part 1". I love it.
- aminom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8No it doesn't; uncanny valley is very specific, and only functions for near-human representations in CGI, robotics and the like. This is so far from being human-like that uncanny valley isn't a factor.
- InternetUser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yes that was the most impressive part for me too. Did you see it recovering from slipping in the mud too? very very nice. clever guys.
- JohnnyZito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This isn't as scary as the robot that can identify foods by taste and thought that a human hand was bacon...
That thing is the one we gotta worry about. - tanveer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I came to read the comments just to find above these 3 comments...
Somehow I feel better knowing I wasn't the only one who felt the sad feeling watching the clip (the song didn't help either) - 574lk3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4very cool,
dident bother me when it got kicked, its a machine...
but it (the kick) did make me think it needs arms,
if someone or something knocked it over harder it wouldent be able to get back up without arms or help.
heck with arms it could put things on its own back. - hablo4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Junkyarddawg:
look no further than the example above (Polar Express) for an unintentional creep-out. Have you seen the Nazi Youth scene? Yikes. - dotancohen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5That's exactly the Uncanny Valley response that was discussed earlier- proof that this machine bridges the Uncanny Valley gap.
- DharmaTurtle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ Patik
Human vs. dog. Dog owns human. Human gives dog a treat.
Human vs. deer. Deer owns human. Human shoots deer.
Human vs. bison. Bison tramples human. Human runs bison over with train.
I think you get the picture. - cnycompguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3can you ride one?
- armand_wall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Might not be pleasant, but at least we know how it sounds. I liked the song and the humor behind it, but felt kind of curious on what this machine might sound like. Now we know the next step in their research is how to cancel that noise.
- Bega, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5it's a debatable point. I'd rather have the arms. Go start running really fast on those 4 legs, I'll just use my arms to punch you :P
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The reason 2 legs is better then 4 is do to the flexability it gives us. humans aren't made to be good at any one thing except thinking and building stuff.
we don't need to run fast because we can build cars
we don't need to fly because we can build planes
we don't need to swim well because we can build boats
there are lots of animals that do specific things a lot better then us, but I still think were the almost the perfect balance. every animal that does one task extremely well always sucks at something else equaly as bad. you don't get something for nothing in the animal kingdom - mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Kind of looks like two people carrying a box with no heads. What's with the weird music? Had me chuckling about the "evil robots".
- UGM2099, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://www.humansunitedagainstrobots.com
HUAR! - hukedonfonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I actually felt sorry for that thing, just seemed so violent. "Why did he have to do that to the poor pooch, he didn't do anything wrong." Then i remember it's just a robot that looks like a dog and think "oh wait that's pretty damn cool."
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That was truly amazing when it recovered from that kick. Robotics at their finest!
I can think of so many organizations and companies this would be good for, from construction (transporting heavy loads over uneven terrain) to EMS and Fire departments. The future is looking bright.
BTW: Anybody know the name of these things, or any other information about it? Can it climb? (not up steps, but a rather steep slope?) - Ellsass, on 11/05/2008, -0/+2by the Flaming Lips
- notforsale, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Looks like its got better stability control than ASIMO, only needed twice as many legs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It is not a myth. That guy is just an idiot.
- ParadoxControl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When I was watching this I thought to my self "Man, this is cool, but it'll probably just fall right over if anything gets in its way." And as soon as I did that guy kicks it, and its not some kinda pussy kick either. I did not expect that thing to recover like it did at all.
- BurtCokain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah I've seen this one before - it's called Big Dog and is being developed by Boston Dynamics as a load carrier for US troops
Here's the link:

Dugg anyway, as I didn't see it on digg before! - kmb1794, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the "uncanny valley" is a subject-specific common human experience. Imagine you weren't talking about robots but people...
It is easy to appreciate somebody you don't have any sexual feelings for. They're ugly or fat or something you find undesireable. The interaction with them can be great because there are no expectations. It is also easy to see this person's flaws, but they are easy to overlook because they don't matter.
Then you have the on-the-verge/potential mates that are not exactly what you want, but you could, angrily, settle for - like a one night stand (only to regret it later). Typically these types are often nemesisesque. This person's flaws are not easy to overlook. You compare yourself to them and get angry because you think you are worth more and would like something better.
Then you have the perfect person that is a no-brainer and so you just go for it every time.
Sure, this person has plenty of faults, but you don't recognize them, because you want this. -
