- Homerr, on 07/03/2009, -0/+29Yeah, I live in Seattle and rarely feel like murdering anyone.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+20protodon probably means "black and Hispanic" people.
Even though television dramas like CSI:NY and Law and Order depict a NYC that's plagued by a white crime epidemic, the fact is blacks and Hispanics account for something like 90% of the violent crime committed in New York City. - inactive, on 07/03/2009, -2/+16Obvious?
I'm sure people get pulled over less on rainy days too. - uninspireded, on 07/03/2009, -0/+10"For now these hot days, is the mad blood stirring" - Shakespeare had it figured out in the 16th century!
- 3rdDay, on 07/03/2009, -0/+9In the UK we say bad weather is the best policeman. I work in a hospital and we very definitely get less weekend trauma admissions due to assault/drunkenness/road traffic accidents/etc whenever the weather is poor - it keeps people off the streets and often stops them going out in the first place. So, yeah, less homicides, too.
- vsujohn2, on 07/03/2009, -1/+10Except maybe yourself....
- Sublex, on 07/03/2009, -0/+9Makes you appreciate rain more.
- doingallright, on 07/03/2009, -0/+7Murderers are human too
- Ryoji, on 07/03/2009, -2/+8I'm sure they make up for it with 50% more suicides on rainy days.
- joculator, on 07/03/2009, -1/+6NYC is ridiculously safe these days. It's an enormous city with a very large population. Even the parts of Manhattan that were dangerous ten years ago are fine now. It's actually annoying, all of the you girls running around thinking they're starring in Gossip Girl. Brooklyn is grotesquely hipster now too.
I guess I miss the hoods. - asgardshill, on 07/03/2009, -3/+8Well duh - did they get a grant for coming up with this shocking conclusion? When it's not raining, it's hot. And when it's hot, people get pissed off. And when they get pissed off, they murder each other.
- crossmr, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5"the police would sometimes joke, “The best cop in the world is on duty tonight.”" given some of the recent stories about new york cops, I don't think that is a joke..
- ADLima, on 07/03/2009, -0/+5Well, nobody wants to get wet.
- jakobrowning, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Who is The Drizzle
- Mexrocker, on 07/03/2009, -0/+4Man, June 2009 must have seen a record low of crimes...
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -1/+4Most homicides are committed by people you know, so it doesn't matter much where you live, but who the people you know are.
- LacY, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3Less people go out in the rain, too. There's probably less murders during snowstorms, tornados, etc, too. I do hope they got *big* bucks to study that.
- LoopyChew, on 07/03/2009, -0/+3If lightning strikes a guy in NYC, would you say that their best cop tasered someone without provocation?
- SystemicThought, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3Eh. Rain makes roads hazardous, so cops get a lot pickier on rainy days. The 5 over the limit you get on the sunny day you might not get when it's raining.
- Zippo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Man am I glad to live in a city where only one or two murders happen each year.
- Zippo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Even still... 17 homicides every 10 days is a scary statistic.
- jrm125, on 07/03/2009, -1/+3So this summer should have a very low murder rate. I think nature hates us.
- TylerDurden76, on 07/03/2009, -2/+4Boo hoo. Doesn't change the truth.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2Why do we always need someone to say this?
It might just be something curious in the numbers, or they might have stumbled on some of revelation, but no one is saying that rain make people less murderous. (in fact, many experts in the article say it's just a fluke) - inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2NIGAZ people are afraid of water.
They are! It's bad for oil drilling. - Julian88888888, on 07/03/2009, -0/+2maybe so, but cops don't want to get out of their cars and into the rain, so I think less likely a cop will pull you over.
- JohnnySoftware, on 07/25/2009, -0/+1Maybe killers do not like to get their deadly weapons wet.
- MaryCait, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1NYC sucks in the rain. It unleashes all the filthy smells of hell and is generally depressing as all get-out. I would think a murder would look more dramatic in the rain, akin to a kiss. But I guess it's hard to get the gumption without that cheery sunshine.
- insertAliasHere, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1I got a ticket in a ***** downpour. I wish that officer had hated rain. But he had a poncho, and I had an out-of-date inspection sticker.
- TylerDurden76, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Rock babies.
- inactive, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Not to be racist, just asking. Why do Blacks and Hispanics commit far more violent crimes than whites of the same economic status? It can't be money issues. What is it?
- ChaosProfessor, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2well yah you dont want to get you shoes all soggy
- Pseudorious, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2Next they'll discover there are fewer murders committed when it's cold out as well.
Murders occur when people conglomerate and piss each other off. When people stay home, they are rare. - GorfTron, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1When it is raining, the common murderer may sit and pensively think ... "life is difficult for all of us. The rain pours on all of us. the good as well as the bad. What right do I have to kill another human who must live with life's "rainy days" as well as I do?" I'm pretty sure this is what happens.
- CTK14A, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Just avoid the Bronx.
- appleofdischord, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Actuaries and statisticians, I assume.
- vsujohn2, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1For some reason, I thought of this...
http://www.lifelounge.com/resources/forumpics/funn ... - nichiplechle, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2maybe its because it doesn't rain most of the days
- CTK14A, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Cops don't get out of the squad car in the rain, either, so this is convenient.
- collution, on 07/03/2009, -1/+2"Doesn't change the truth."
You're right, ignorance prevails behind computer desks in suburban neighborhoods. I totally get it. - decx, on 07/03/2009, -2/+3well i for one don't want to get wet when i go out to kill people, umbrellas are gay
- teamgwho, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1"I'm gonna go pop a cap in ass!"
"***** that, have you been outside?"
//looks outside...
"awwww *****!" - nurbsenvi, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Because white people drive black people in to disadvantaged situations...
harder for them to get a job in any economic status and the cycle begins. - DamonToo, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Yeah, and I'm less scared driving through the ghetto on Christmas day. Gang bangers have families too. It's raining hard? Not a good day for killin.
P.S. NYT AGAIN?! Stop posting NYT stories until they get rid of their bs registration requirement. - SystemicThought, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Julian... they have those nice shower caps for their police hats, though.
- TylerDurden76, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1People should be literate enough to know what a Homophone is.
And you should check your own posts. Posting without proofing, promotes ignorance. - CTK14A, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1You're on the ball -- suicide is less common in warm, sunny locales.
- b3owulf, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Mr. Mister... when I get pissed, you get mist
- antdude, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1So how is Seattle with all its rain? ;)
- appleofdischord, on 07/03/2009, -0/+1Here is one example FTA about latent variables....
"Some studies found that other crimes, like aggravated assault, went down when there was rain. Professor Cohn said one reason might be that assaults more often involve strangers, and rain reduces the chances that people who do not know each other will encounter one another." -
