- DirtyWorker, on 10/12/2007, -5/+172I'm really happy there are idiots out there that do stuff like this, so we don't have to.
- MattLat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+139I just wish they'd get a drillbit that wasn't so dull. I've drilled through my floor in half the time it took them to go through that screen.
- bugninja, on 10/12/2007, -4/+97"I just wish they'd get a drill bit that wasn't so dull."
My guess is these guys had the bit going in the wrong direction and it was brute force and pressure that put that thing through ultimately. - devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+52@mattlat
no kidding. I thought maybe they were using a motorized screwdriver or something. That guy must have a jellyfish grip or something for it to take that long to go through a delicate plastic membrane.
edit:bugninja's probably right. if they're dumb enough to drill the hole in the first place they're dumb enough to do it wrong.. - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+25@digglicksballs
I'm digging you down because I think it's fun to see you go all ballistic like that. :D - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@ MattLat
That comment just brought back horrible nightmares of when I accidently drilled a 3/4" hole through a floor with, what I thought, was really rare tile. God, I spent two days trying to cover up the hole and trying to figure out how I was going to tell the home owners. Turns out it was just replica junk and they were tearing it out anyways.
Back to the topic at hand.
It's really depressing to see a perfectly good screen torn up like that. If you don't want that hardware, just send that ***** to me. I could use it. - contextclouds, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Doubtful.
Playdoh would begin to deform under the centrifugal force applied by the drill.
You'd see it bulging at the sides. - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Howstuffworks.com:
"To create an LCD, you take two pieces of polarized glass. A special polymer that creates microscopic grooves in the surface is rubbed on the side of the glass that does not have the polarizing film on it. The grooves must be in the same direction..." and so on and so forth for a couple pages.
You win sir. - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -8/+22@digglicksballs
oK, i may just be stupid, but i've never seen a laptop with a glass display...example please?
-Edit, ah i see. well, checking howstuffworks.com right now... - Powder, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16They probably weren't putting much force on it at all letting the bit do all the work. Seeing as how putting alot of pressure on one single point would probably crack the screen super fast and not get the desired effect they did.
- ArmandoM, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I think you could argue that a drill hole through your screen would fall under "intentional damage"
- aaronm67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Man, have a little class.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12I can get that same effect on Beryl!
*edit, damn someone beat me to the joke. I'm stupid - bury. - Homunculiheaded, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I hope the during the great war with the machines, robot deaths will look this cool. I know I'm excited!
- MrMysterious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Those bastards can't drill through an LCD screen yet all my LCD screens get scratched all to hell.
- simpleid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Along with the howstuffworks quote above...
Consumer LCD monitors are more fragile than their CRT counterparts, with the screen especially vulnerable. However, lighter weight makes falling less dangerous, and some displays may be protected with glass shields.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_crystal_display - leobaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I want to know what happens when you slice one with a razor knife (while turned on).
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Oh, that poor thing!
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10HA! The ripple effect! I knew someone could run beryl on the bios!
Wait.... - Aldrenean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That looks exactly like what happened to my Toshiba Gigabeat after I ran into a sharp corner with it in my pocket. =P
- blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Stereotype? A short attention span is why I found Digg in the first place!
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Swedish, it says so in the YouTube comments.......I am astounded by how people simply don't read anymore
- thePoopSmith, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I wonder if that's covered under warranty
- u8myfoood, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the after effect looks like it would make a good wallpaper!
- mutatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7You probably cringe at all the cars they wreck in action movies, too.
- diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5always a concern with consumer electronics- will this device release mercury if drilled through the center?
- nipterink, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4unfortunately, it took me longer than 35 seconds to navigate the tracker to the 35 second mark.
- InetRoadkill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5He used the wrong type of drill bit to drill the glass. A regular drill bit doesn't work very well. You need to use a diamond bit.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what i don't understand is why did it take so long for them to puncture a hole will a drill bit?
actually my question is how come Wiimotes do so much damage to these LCD tvs just by being thrown at one? - myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4For the rest of the digg crowd:
an•thro•po•mor•phism - noun - the attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object.
Derivatives - an•thro•po•mor•phize - verb - diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4YOU'RE the most boring video ever.
- billybob476, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yeah, seeing the tube explode and riddle the person doing it with glass shrapnel would be interesting.
On a side note that looks like a Dell Inspiron 8000. I still have one of those lying around...PIII 800 Mhz. - GrimReeper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I bet if you went to GeekSquad with that laptop and said "My screen doesn't work" They wouldn't find the problem.
- adolfojp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It looks organic, almost as if it were withering away in pain.
Leave it to me to antropomorphize computers. - defcon8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think some books need to be "sended" to you, with your great understanding of language.
- crawf061, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3One of my old roommates from college was working on a project for intro to computer programming. He got so frustrated from getting errors that he punched the screen of the laptop. It cracked in all directions, turned out to be very pretty. A very questionable decision though.
- videoCT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I used Google Translate to interpret what they were saying, and here it is:
Uh, hey Beavis. What're you doing to my laptop. Like, my homework is on there.
Shutup douchebag, I'm making a video for YouTube. - geronimo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Another reason not to do this.. those LCD displays contain mercury.
- miroze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now if we can get these same idiots to drill through a CRT monitor while it is turned on. *cough* *cough*
Any takers?
I can only imagine how long it would take them to drill through a CRT if it took them that long to penetrate through an LCD. - tardpicard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@crawf061
I guessing he didn't graduate magna cum laude. - diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I dont have a short attention span, in fact Ooh a Wii story!
- raptordrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Man, my Inspiron 8200 (that laptop was an 8000 series) is crying after displaying that to me!
- deathssword, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Luckily the LCD was already damaged, "Needless to say, the display was already rendered useless".
Shiny! looks like a mini EMP cannon from Command and Conquer - Asheron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually they would say its a power supply issue.
- markdr123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Pretty patterns...!
- Protoss, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Pft, robot war. Everyone knows the World War Z will be much better.
- lagnut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3it's swedish and they aren't saying anything interesting
- republicoftexas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would like to see someone make a screen saver of this happening.
- eggo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The mercury is actually in the CCFL backlight. In this particular laptop (and most others) the backlight is at the bottom edge of the screen, almost no danger of releasing it by drilling the center of the screen.
- diktator279, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I accidentally sat there with a drill to my screen for 1 minute... can i have a new one?
