- irvines, on 04/07/2009, -0/+19Awesome article. I have to deal with this everyday. Its good to know what type of boss you have. One of the best i have read on here.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/08/2009, -0/+16I had a boss years ago that was a combination of these and more. She was COMPLETELY incompetent. An IT director of a huge pharma website in the US, she was an Avon sales girl previously. I kid you friggin' not! And boy was she a bitch with a capital "B"!!! I could write a book on how nasty she was. Once we were in a meeting and she was stressing out this dude (and she wasn't even his boss) so much HIS NOSE STARTED BLEEDING!!! One of my coworkers was an amateur bodybuilder before working for her. Within a month, he was on blood pressure medication. I'm telling you, her nastiness was the stuff of legend!
Here's one that talks of her lack of technical knowledge. One night, we're rolling out new software updates and Dr. Watson was screwing up some people's computers. As in the software Dr. Watson!!! You could always tell when she had no clue what was going on (which was often) because she became silent. She finally can't take it anymore and blurts out, "ARE WE TALKING ABOUT A REAL DOCTOR HERE???" Lololololol, oh boy!!! Everyone tried stifling their laughter, because again, if she puts you in the dog house, you won't be laughing. She was truly the worst boss I ever had.
She landed up firing me (the only job I've been fired from) after six months because I wanted C++ training but she insisted I take Java. No reason as to why, just "No, take the Java training instead." I didn't like my career being dictated by someone who didn't know jack about tech, so when I tried appealing to her boss, she found out and I was gone within a month for "incompetence". - Luv5, on 04/08/2009, -0/+15I respect bosses who are competent and make you feel like an idiot when compared to them. I hate bosses who are incompetent and then they treat you like an idiot compared to them. Most bosses fall into the later category.
- seanstuart, on 04/08/2009, -1/+15Good list. I lost my job because of a "politician" before. He was good - attributing with clever language every good event on the job to himself and every bad one to others, all regardless to his role in any of it. A skilled brown-noser, the higher-ups loved him deeply. Disturbing and beautiful at the same time, like a talented painter who uses blood and ***** as his medium.
- marx2k, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10Well, abortions too, but more commonly pap smears.
- Andrwmorph, on 04/08/2009, -0/+8My boss gets angry at me for reading articles like this while at work
- specialK16, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7"A skilled brown-noser, the higher-ups loved him deeply. Disturbing and beautiful at the same time, like a talented painter who uses blood and ***** as his medium."
Wow, awesome quote right there. - Crazyredivan, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7I'm noticing a pattern on Digg today about workplace incompetence...
I say this as my boss just e-mails me from her Blackberry that she's going to miss our weekly department meeting because her doctor is running late. The meeting is in 3 hours...bets on if she purposefully scheduled it during the meeting? - burstaneurysm, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7Well timed, my new boss is ***** retarded.
I'm convinced that he was a brilliant IT guy back in 97, then had a massive head injury and has been unable to learn anything about computers since then. - elcalrissian, on 04/08/2009, -10/+16My new boss is a moron. He's only been at the job a few months, and he's already spent over $1 trillion, and is about to gain authority to look at every detail of my computing.
- nelsonuwp, on 04/08/2009, -1/+7I see what you did there.....
- MSP1, on 04/08/2009, -0/+5Any sufficiently advanced incompetence is indistinguishable from malice.
- LexWalk, on 04/07/2009, -1/+6Personally I just use a rolled up newspaper and threats of eugenics.
- hokie47, on 04/08/2009, -1/+5Just ask her how the pap smear went the next day.
- roebeet, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4are you kidding me? they are a staple of corporate America. If you can't fire them, promote them....
- Trifold, on 04/08/2009, -1/+5Wow, as bad of that sounds, you should've seen my old boss. Holy ***** what a *****.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4Well, unfortunately, it's better to look good than be good. I've seen enough examples of this to know it's the rock-solid truth. Being cozy with the boss will beat out your phd more often than not. I am NOT kidding.
- Luv5, on 04/08/2009, -0/+4Darn. There goes my management career. LOL
- random90210, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Oh, and I seem to have forgotten: ***** THE RIAA
- chriswastaken, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3NSFW NSFW!!!
/fired - PlanckTime, on 04/08/2009, -3/+6@JohnPerry - Wow guy. You sound like a 2nd grader. I doubt it is a Fox website (whatever that means precisely) because it gives implicit approval to Obama firing Wagoner. The fact that GM has been nationalized to the point that such a thing could happen is not something a conservative would approve of.
- noncn4mst, on 04/15/2009, -2/+5*latter
- StigNordas, on 04/07/2009, -0/+3It seems the universal advice given is to flop on your back. Screw it, most aggro bosses I've encountered like to see some attitude.
- GamerXR72, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3If only that were true.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Poetic
- doctechnical, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Some of the best bosses I've had didn't have a clue what I did for a living... so they pretty much just left me alone :)
- banderwocky, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Of the seven managers I 'report' to, one of them fall directly into "The Micro-manager" and another into "The Politician".
- TheTyrant63, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3FTA: Rick Wagoner, whose questionable guidance cost the company approximately $82 billion in the past four years. Is it any wonder President Obama demanded his resignation?
So, Obama demands a resignation from a man who only ruined a car company? Are you serious? He doesnt call for the resignation of CEOs of failed banks but to add to the hypocrisy of the whole thing, he turns around and places them as his advisers. Hmm, you guys asked for change? I hope you like it. - catbeller, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3Again with the car companies.
We've collapsed into the supply-side/deregulation depression. GM could be making flying cars for five grand and demand would be nearly non-existent.
I've noticed no bankers, financiers, financial geniuses or other bastards have been asked to resign for causing this mess. Only the car companies, which were doing as well as anyone until the banks collapsed.
And every auto company in the world is on life support. Gonna fire all of their executives?
Perhaps, in a depression, all companies falter. - doctechnical, on 04/08/2009, -0/+3I can relate. I had one boss who thought he knew all about PCs because he read PC Week religiously. The programming team was going over the specs for a new application and we decided we'd code it in Clipper (this was late 80s IIRC), the boss overheard and suggested we use C. After patiently explaining why C wouldn't be a good choice in this situation he shrugged and said "It's just another language". I couldn't take it, and responded "So is Chinese, I don't see you writing any memos in it."
He actually said he had a monopoly on brains. Sure. - kasjogren, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2My GF has a first time manager and I am trying to get her to train the manager correctly :D
- rockwithme000, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3LIKE A BOSS
- Colecoman1982, on 04/08/2009, -2/+4You may be an obsessed nut-bag if...
...You post comments related to your insane obsession in unrelated threads. - Klinky, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2Do you honestly believe McCain would have fired all of Bush's buddies?
- bonerfide, on 04/08/2009, -0/+2You got the memo about the cover sheets on the TPS reports?
- random90210, on 04/08/2009, -1/+3LIKE A BOSS (here are some cool alt-code characters so you have to digg me: ▄└├──┬, remember, if you bury any comment with obscure characters, you will be evicted from digg)
- Zindrix, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1I'm not pro-McCain by any means, but I don't know why Obama "fired" Wagoner. I think it was a bad move by him and it just goes to show how our country is sliding into socialism when the president/government has the power to control such things in America's corporations.
I know GM was given bailout money but that shouldn't mean that our president (whom has NO experience being the CEO of the largest automaker in the world) could appoint somebody who may or may not do a better job. It just shows his ignorance in my opinion. He probably had to reward some campaign contributor by giving them there own car company...Here you go! - roebeet, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1I know more than a few managers like that - great techies, but then lose their edge after they move into management.
- Eorster, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1Must be a government contractor.
- paperclipsNsoup, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2I've gotten lucky that my boss isn't that incompetent. His Technological knowledge is among the best in the industry... Social skills are lacking a bit, but after you learn how to get along with him, he's a pretty good boss. Though he does have some 'politician' characteristics.
- dhughes, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1 Every type listed all combined is every boss.
- johnPerry8, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1And they have a big dose of ads. The website itself is too slow to load; yet you have to load it twice.
- blackinthmiddle, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2How do deal with websites like askmen that insist on spreading out one page articles to multiple pages? Adblock! Here's what they don't realize. If they have good content and it's obvious they're not whoring out their site for ad dollars, I'll leave adblock off. For example, I don't turn it on for digg. But if you do what askmen does, you'll get the Adbock!
- PlanckTime, on 04/08/2009, -1/+2Good call with that one there, guy. Currently I am +2 and you are -6. I don't care much if people digg me down. It happens. Sometimes I get it right, sometimes horribly wrong (-20). Unlike you though I don't tend to take the disagreement personally. Just let it go. You don't actually have a personal stake in it, I promise.
- SarahC, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1We need an email address.
- smack1700, on 04/16/2009, -0/+1What about the completely absent boss? Mine is constantly in meetings or traveling, and I think I've seen him maybe like 8-10 times in 3 years.
I have no idea what he does or what value he adds to the company. - JustinLoether, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1LIKE A BOSS!
- g00dETH3R, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1I know that Wagoner is incompetent but i don't understand why people aren't pissed that the Government is interfering in business, thats not how America is supposed to work?
- g00dETH3R, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1***** you and your assumptions, many people here voted for a 3rd party or Ron Paul.
- charlietuna, on 04/08/2009, -0/+1The NY Post was all over Obama for "unfairly" firing Wagoner (asking him to step down). Pure B.S.
