I thought for any "line of sight" directional antenna, the back plate has to be parabolic (hence why all sat dishes are... err... parabolic!). Just how do two tin cans, joined together, create a parabolic antenna? Answers on a post card please!
- donveto, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Buildings attenuate signals by around -20 dB if they are made of concrete and metal. Just opening the window when you want to make a call will eliminate signal loss. If you have a basement and you want a signal there, then what you can do is fix cans at both ends, with 1 can outside and another inside then you will get a signal in your closed basement.

- bruffterman, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Simply put it's not an antenna, the antenna is the little piece of copper wire inside, it only needs to be really short because the radio waves at 1900mhz are also really short. On a satellite dish the antenna is actually in the LNB (Low Noise Block) which is that little box at the end of the pole, in front of the dish, the dish is a parabolic reflector, designed to bounce more of the radio waves at the antenna.
This is what's called a wave guide, it essentially shields the antenna from the noise of atmospheric conditions as well as other radio waves, it's kinda more complicated than that, but google if you want an MIT-class explanation. - Suits, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Pfft.Just use Wifi Speed Spray, works with phones too. http://j-walk.com/other/wifispray/

But then it just struck me, at my high school I get HORRIBLE reception, makes it annoying when I have to get a call out (I have to stand on my head by the flag pole basically) so this could be useful to just stick in my locker and pull it out when I need to make a call.
