- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+50It's called a Penny Stove (alcohol stove). I make my own for backpacking. They are very efficient, weigh next to nothing. I burn Everclear (190 proof grain alcohol) in mine because it's multipurpose. You can burn Everclear, drink it, and/or clean wounds with it, etc. For a cool trail drink, throw some freeze dried berries into your mug with a shot of Everclear. You'll be golden.
These are the best instructions online: http://www.csun.edu/~mjurey/waite_instruct.html
Heiny cans use thicker aluminum as well :) - daeyeth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+41Actually MacGyver did make this in episode 53, only he used a small rock, ketchup, and a bottle of Jack Daniels.
- mahavishnu108, on 10/10/2007, -1/+26I think I will patent this and trademark as Pocket Meth Lab®
- EmileVictor, on 10/10/2007, -1/+22Seriously, I saw a guy using one of these sustain 3rd degree burns and spend weeks in hospital. (the small bottle of heat/metho ignited due to stray flame inside the can, and the liquid sprayed back from the little parabolic bit. We thought the contents inside the can had gone out.)
Be careful people, this happened to someone who's a camping expert and has had years more experience than any of us. I would simply advise none of you use one of these, as I've learnt myself. Real camp stoves are a lot cheaper than plastic surgery. - HydroSliders, on 10/10/2007, -1/+21Pretty pimp... perfect size for shrimp.
- dodger2020, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11Heet is a fuel additive for your auto. Removes water from your fuel system.
- sparkysko, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9If you move the holes to the side of the 'stove', you can place your pot directly on top of it, that way you don't need the pot holder. 15mm from the top is the sweet spot.
Zen Stove is the definitive source for all that is alcohol can stove, all the various types and excellent instructions and templates.

- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7....or a backpacker, or there is an emergency where you have no power/gas, etc. Makes a great stove to throw in your earthquake bug-out bag.
- psion01, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It is, but the temperature required to burn aluminum (4100 K -- 6920° F) is quite a bit higher than that produced by an alcohol-based fuel.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6It's methanol. It's also the reason you shouldn't be cooking with this OR using it in aluminum.

Materials to avoid: STRONG OXIDIZING AGENTS, ALUMINUM, ZINC, OR METALS THAT DISPLACE HYDROGEN, RUBBER AND RUBBER BASED COATINGS, CHROMIC ANHYDRIDE, LEAD PERCHLORATE AND PERCHLORIC ACIDS
Hazardous decomposition products: EXCESSIVE HEATING AND OR INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION WILL PRODUCE CARBON MONOXIDE AND TOXIC VAPORS SUCH AS FORMALDEHYDE
Specific Hazard and Precaution: TARGET ORGANS: CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM - ventsi, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8awesome
- Learning2fly2, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8you people are crazy.....getting drunk with everclear and hiking. I'll make sure to put that one on my not to do list
- Dax420, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Or.... Don't be a moron.
I use one of these for backpacking. You can NOT buy a lighter stove than this for all the money in the world.
And Methyl Hydrate burns hotter than almost any other stove fuel, so it boils water fast. - wakananda, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Sterno, etc., all give off nasty toxic fumes, and are not suitable for indoor use. If you burn alcohol -denatured alcohol or everclear - you are just using up some oxygen and not fuming up the tent, or the fallout shelter, or whatever.
- RazorG, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Wow that is just amazing!
- VaporBro, on 10/26/2007, -1/+5Excellent. Will have to try one out for my PCT hike..
- ErsatzLogic, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The REAL MacGyver would use paper clips in place of a hanger...
- physphd, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Precisely. Plus, these stoves can burn almost any alcohol fuel you run across (do NOT use white gas if you value your eyebrows...or so I hear).
One can also make these stoves with a single can and a pocekt knife. Though slightly less efficient, knowing how to do this with a single stray can could save your life instead of looking around for fiberglass, a thumbtack, a second can, etc. Keep It Simple, Stupid.
Carry a pocket knife and know how to use it - a modest swiss army knife can get you decent shelter, fire, food and water from the forest. A simple 550 paracord lanyard on that knife and a firesteel will have you living fat. Fancy gear is great, but you can never forget to pack ideas and training never breaks in the field. - rmmcclay, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Yes.
- Fritzed, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3I used to use one of these when camping, they are great for the portability, but they are a bit dangerous if you aren't careful. Now I use an "esbit" camping stove. It is almost as small and a lot safer. Not to mention, the fuel is much easier to pack.

- weebit, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Every week I watched MacGyver, anticipating what his new trick would be from every day items. Good show, I wish it would come back.
- smurf22, on 10/10/2007, -2/+5Although its been on the front page before it still gets my digg. Its a lot better in video form, then it is in picture.
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4No one said anything about "getting drunk", which I would never do while backpacking or hiking. If you were a hiker, you would know the only time it would really be appropriate to have a drink would be at the end of the day when you are done setting up camp for the night. 1 shot of Everclear is = to 2.8 beers. If it takes you that much to get drunk, you should go back to wine coolers.
- leomyhero, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3@MindTrigger
I like the Penny Stove design you suggested much better: http://www.csun.edu/~mjurey/waite_instruct.html
The use of Everclear is more environmentally friendly as well as "non-toxic" :)
Thanks! - Noelix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2http://www.rei.com/product/653343
- VijchtiDoodah, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2I don't know if it's practical for the PCT, you'll have to ask someone who knows the trail well.
As for me, I just got done using mine on the JMT -- it works wonderfully for boiling water, but is too inefficient to be used to heat up anything else: the fuel runs out pretty quickly, you can't control how long it burns, and denatured alcohol (usually the fuel of choice for these) begins boiling as it heats up so it can't be used for extended periods of time. Thus, you're usually limited to heating up pre-cooked food and pasta. - Makr, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2more than likely you would have all these things around and it's way cheaper than a portable stove.
- speedyrev, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3It's basically alcohol.
- Ludnix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3With a can of Sterno less than a dollar a piece I don't plan on using this any time soon, but I guess it's a neat idea.
- ki1022, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4How the hell is this crazy to take camping? Have you ever even been camping, dumbass?
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2FYI, Denatured alcohol is mostly Ethanol (same as Everclear) with other ingredience added to make it undrinkable, and sometimes toxic (methanol and/or other garbage like benzine (!)). The stove burns long enough to boil water, which is generally what you care about while on the trail. If you use the instructions I posted, there is an additional "simmer ring" which slows the burn and heat output so you can simmer items that need to cook longer than a boil. You aren't generally bringing items with long cook times while you are backpacking.
Denatured alcohol is considered the best fuel because it's cheap and easy to come by. I think the benefits of Everclear ,grain alcohol, outweigh the price of denatured alcohol since you can use it for more than one purpose.
If I was going to thru-hike the PCT or even do a long section hike, I would probably pick up a jetboil system. - gmiley, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Here is their product line: http://www.goldeagle.com/heet/products.htm
Dunno why dodger got dugg down... - MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Thanks! I messed around with a couple designs, and that one turned out best. Those premium Heiny cans use a heavier aluminum, so the stove is more sturdy. They also have bends in the metal which make it stronger as well. There are a lot of reasons to use Everclear in my mind. Sadly, some states banned the sale of 190 proof booze, although it can usually be found in Indian Reservation liquor stores :)
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The aluminum doesn't burn. It's the fuel that burns. Mine is well used and doesn't even have a scorch mark on it. Make one and try it out. Takes about an hour to make your first time.
- ki1022, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1you want the methanol one
- MindTrigger, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1You don't need the fiberglass. I don't use it in mine. See my comments above for a better stove design link. This stove isn't about being broke. You can buy a commercial alcohol stove for $30. It's about doing it yourself, and they are also generally lighter than commercial versions. It's a neat trick to learn as well because you could make one of these during emergency situations with very easy to find resources.
- macgyber, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well I don't know about MacGyver but I thought it was awsome.
- arcooke, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Any alternatives?
- Learning2fly2, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2It's called a joke my friend I actually love everclear
- travvv, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1more like les stroud would be proud of
- Veridien, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2So cool, but for practicality, it only gets a C+. I already *know* I would cut myself...
- Learning2fly2, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm sorry but the story is about being broke since he hints at not being able to pay your power bill. If you go onto the Nevada Division of Forestry website it will tell you that in the last 5 years there have been over 17 forest fires (over 1,500 acres or more) started with these because people leave them behind and don't know they are not out. And that is just Nevada/California.
The comment was originally a joke but I guess people took it a little too seriously. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yer yay for McGyver, I cant stand to watch the shows nowdays but they did inspire me as a kid.
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1do you use your swiss army knife on digg 2 ?
