Most Colleges offer institutional grants to help make up the difference between college costs and what a family can be expected to contribute through there income - savings - loans and some of there student earnings.
Some other institutional grants which are known as "merit awards" or referred to as "merit scholarships", are awarded to students on the basis of their academic achievemenst. Although; some merit awards are offered only to students whose families have demonstrated a true financial need. Still other merit grants are awarded without regard to a family's finances whatsoever.
