- beachsouthpaw, on 06/23/2009, -0/+25Education bieng directly sponsored by corporate interests. This is a terrible ***** idea.
- yocouchdigga, on 06/23/2009, -0/+17Idiocracy, here we come.
- Yankees368, on 06/23/2009, -0/+12"About 800 classes will be canceled at City College during the next school year thanks to the state's budget crisis."
Because cutting much needed classes for people trying to better their lives and get good jobs is the best way to fix a recession. - CJArgus, on 06/23/2009, -0/+12Digg is depressing.
- Skurt, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11Maybe, but if your comment was sponsored by Dictionary.com at least you would have spelled being correctly...
/just sayin' - lordmike, on 06/23/2009, -0/+11Very bad precedent... At some point, sponsors will demand to specify course content, especially in subjects like political science, history, biology, economics, etc.
- TheLoneWolf071, on 06/23/2009, -0/+9Is anyone else sick of this kinda of stuff? I hate how everything is now "...Brought to you by XXX". Hell here in TX most of our concert halls, etc are simply names "The XXX center"
- AraleNorimaki, on 06/23/2009, -0/+8As the 21st century began, human evolution was at a turning point. Natural selection, the process by which the strongest, the smartest, the fastest, reproduced in greater numbers than the rest, a process which had once favored the noblest traits of man, now began to favor different traits. Most science fiction of the day predicted a future that was more civilized and more intelligent. But as time went on, things seemed to be heading in the opposite direction. A dumbing down. How did this happen? Evolution does not necessarily reward intelligence. With no natural predators to thin the herd, it began to simply reward those who reproduced the most, and left the intelligent to become an endangered species.
- TugOSpiegel, on 06/23/2009, -0/+7That's how it has always been. Staples Center, Carnegie Hall, Minute Maid Park...we become oblivious to the fact that they're named after corporations & ppl
- gdenne, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5"This course on the environmental care and management is proudly brought to you by Exxon Mobil."
- idbjoshm, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5This sex education class brought to you by, Vivid Entertainment.
- Swivelstick, on 06/23/2009, -0/+5got a tax break for doing it.. So who really pays for it then??
- Yankees368, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4It's what plants crave.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4I swear I've read about this sort of thing already going on with medical programs in major colleges by pharmaceutical companies. They "fund" the programs which then end up pumping out doctors that have been through years of classes that were basically commercials for whichever company was backing it. I really can't see anything good coming out of this.
- ptFoe, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4lol American Education, solid as their cars
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+4It already is in universities. That's why professors don't really give a give about undergrads - their grad students and their research are what generate the school money.
- finalheaven07, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Take Bio 205 sponsored by Gatorade for that information.
- sockpuppets, on 06/23/2009, -1/+4Home Depot is pretty familiar with screwing things.
- Tddupre, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3***** The Recession
- kefkaantakrist, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Is it an *erotic* concert hall?
- Swivelstick, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Digg comments even more so..
- jezsik, on 06/23/2009, -0/+3Copyright Law, brought to you by ... the RIAA, the Recording Industry Association of America!
Um, no thanks. - inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I know! And it maes the music SO much worse!
- jadenton, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Its already here, and has been forever. Or did you think that those deeply discounted student editions of AutoCad, Photoshop, and Visual C++ where provided out of the goodness of the corporations hearts? Sometimes universities pay full price of computer labs and other high price equipment, sometimes they don't because the corporation know that students trained to use one piece of equipment will favor it in the future.
- BigGooseX, on 06/23/2009, -2/+4This biology class brought to you by Fox News! First topic on the agenda is Creationism.
- HappyScrappy, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2...brought to you by Carl's Jr.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2I remember, (1970s), having a lady from Crest Toothpaste, coming into our kindergarten class and teaching us about....the importance of good oral hygiene.
- Yankees368, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2It's whats in Brawndo.
- Swivelstick, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Like local businesses..
- tgc1, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Hey, those CEO's and higher ups in government institutions need their bonuses.
I wish I was kidding. That's probably where a good chunk of state money is going these days. - AraleNorimaki, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2what next a law school at a Costco?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8zNsUTWsOc - digggggggggg, on 06/23/2009, -0/+2Computer Science 101 - Introduction to the .net framework. Sponsored by Microsoft.
Required course materials: Microsoft Visual Studio .net, "Programming Microsoft Visual Basic 2005: The Language" (Microsoft press, 2007)
Description: This class will introduce you to "computer science" - that is, spending the rest of your professional career stuck on a single development platform without any real understanding of algorithms, patterns, complexity, optimization, or the rest of "computer science." - AraleNorimaki, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2But *why* do they use them to make Brawndo?
- nrdj, on 07/04/2009, -0/+1Much more likely to be "Biology 101: Brought to you by Monsanto!"
- voldron, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1What are electrolytes?
- bdbr, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Example:
Candlestick Park (1960-1995, 2008-present)
3Com Park at Candlestick Point (1995-2002)
San Francisco Stadium at Candlestick Point (2002-2004)
Monster Park (2004-2008)
Its even worse with the college bowl games. How can anyone even seriously say "The Meineke Car Care Bowl"? - NegativeDigg, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1It's already being done in the automotive trade and work well. There are tons of technical schools that are sponsored by corporations. One example is UTI, it's sponsored by Mercedes-Benz. When you graduate you can then go and get a nice check from mercedes benz or open your own independent shop.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1No, it should be "Bio 101: Sponsored by Trojan Condoms"
"Ethics 101: Sponsored by Microsoft http://www.microsoft.com/"
"Psychology 101: Sponsored by Google http://www.google.com/"
and Kartenlegen 101: Sponsored by Tarot Karten "http://www.tarotkarten24.de/Deine_tarotkarte" - KingGorilla, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1I'm pretty sure it's being done in medical schools
- GenerousLinus, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Those all sound like ***** classes. Government funding should be used towards helping people find new careers and actual education, not allowing bored old people to learn yoga and synchronized swimming. On top of all that I'm a "poor college student" who pays for everything himself with grants and loans. My community college in Oregon sure as hell doesn't offer free books and food, let alone waive tuition fees. Frankly I don't feel to bad for people who are losing free tuition. Get loans and pay for your own education like the rest of us.
- inactive, on 06/23/2009, -1/+2Your other option appears to be let it disappear entirely...
I'll put up with added services available to me if it means a corporation sponsored it, got their name on it, and got a tax break for doing it. - bdbr, on 06/23/2009, -0/+1Maybe that's why they're cutting them.
- sj200, on 06/23/2009, -1/+1This course is sponsored by Kotex Maxi-Pads. . . .
- scarredup, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0The problem is that the corporations will eventually threaten to cut the funding unless they can influence the curriculum.
The best way is to start off with a nice agreeable *insert number here* year contract. By the time it expires the school will have become dependent on the money and they can threaten not to renew it unless they can influence the class material to suit their needs.
It's manipulative, it's disgusting and its downright wrong. Welcome to the world of business. - JROXZ, on 06/23/2009, -1/+1Whew! I thought it was City College CUNY...
- ultimathule, on 06/23/2009, -1/+1*moreso
- TopKnot, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0I already got my education and student loans paid off. I think this younger generation needs to suffer too. Pay higher and higher costs and come out of college in deep debt. Or think about what you are saying and accept help from corporate America. Just don't raise my taxes so I have to pay for YOUR education and stupidity. The choice and is yours!
- NegativeDigg, on 06/23/2009, -0/+0Maybe Home Depot can sponsor a wood working class?
