- NavS, on 05/14/2009, -2/+330There ain't a god damn book even near under $100
- Pitak89, on 05/14/2009, -14/+240No Alcohol. Buried as inaccurate.
- JewFro, on 05/14/2009, -0/+219$57 for a new textbook? Yea right.
Maybe in 1915? - lamejoketeller, on 05/14/2009, -16/+224my chart would have weed as most of it
- peterjmag, on 05/14/2009, -2/+142Only 37% own a "digital music player?" I don't think I've met one person in college that _doesn't_ have an iPod or something similar.
- sidewinderaim9x, on 05/14/2009, -1/+139They're probably counting novels from your lit classes as textbooks.
- NickLee808, on 05/14/2009, -10/+106What the *****'s a DVD player?
- nicktomyskins, on 05/14/2009, -4/+88[Buried] due to this being absolute *****
- peterjmag, on 05/14/2009, -1/+72John McCain.
- verkon, on 05/14/2009, -3/+64I don't get this, there is more dvd players then tv's?
- BCPneumatics, on 05/14/2009, -0/+61I think this is what most of the "other" subcategory of "discretionary" consists of.
- copypastry, on 05/14/2009, -4/+64Weed is "discretionary spending" i think.
- dlichteman, on 05/14/2009, -1/+61Textbooks are 120+.........
- BryanFeelsGood, on 05/14/2009, -0/+57Apparently this is some magic college, where textbooks are dirt cheap and ONLY 9 of 10 students have a cell phone? Where is this wonderful place?
- idavidtang, on 05/14/2009, -0/+41It would be interesting to know who that student was back in 1915 that spent $94,541.44 during his freshman year.
- Kennui, on 05/14/2009, -1/+39Does it play torrents?
- SSPink, on 05/14/2009, -0/+38Yes and no.
What do you think the "Other" section of the "Discretionary" spending is for? - physixx, on 05/14/2009, -2/+36Pretty much every European country for the win?
- Zivie, on 05/14/2009, -0/+33What school can you find the average textbook price at $57?
- duncanspumpkin, on 05/14/2009, -6/+38Man you don't get free education. Scotland for the win.
- Gizza, on 05/14/2009, -0/+28It's pretty sad that being a poor student is just an accepted fact of life in the US.
Unfortunately tertiary education is no longer free here in Australia (since the 70s I think), but we have a thing called HECS if you can't pay for your education upfront.
HECS is basically an interest free loan from the government that you don't have to start paying back until you earn over a certain threshold. At which time a percentage of your pay goes to paying off the loan.
Because it's interest free there's no real rush to pay it off. Also because you don't need to pay it off until you reach the earning threshold we end up with "professional uni students" who tend to be older people earning less than the threshold just continually taking uni course and racking up a massive HECS loan that they never need to pay off. - SSPink, on 05/14/2009, -1/+28Yeah! Because if we all just keep our pot use in the closet forever eventually the powers that be will decide to legalize it based on the fact that no one admits to using it.
- dendendennis, on 05/14/2009, -7/+30shut up.
- sajorojas, on 05/14/2009, -0/+22I'll get back to you on that. brb
- bobbi21, on 05/14/2009, -11/+33I dont even count lit classes as part of college. Might as well count intramural volleyball or something in there too :P
- Mtown, on 05/14/2009, -1/+22In the "Discretionary" section, the 22.1% labeled as "other" should simply be renamed "beer".
- Piha, on 05/14/2009, -1/+21Yeah and 1 in 10 people don't have cellphones apparently..
Was this survey done in 2002 or something? - limpits, on 05/14/2009, -0/+19he probably just bought his own house near campus
- consonance, on 05/14/2009, -0/+19Chpskt Nvrsty -- Leaving out the vowels and passing the savings onto you.
- NathanielJ, on 05/14/2009, -0/+19You'd be hard-pressed to find even used science textbooks for under $80 or so near my University. They have to be including novels etc from philosophy/english/etc classes.
- ndngoat, on 05/14/2009, -0/+16I never pay for my pizza. I go to stupid events and meetings from groups posted around campus, come near the middle or end of their meeting and just eat the food (which is 90% of the time pizza). Although it is kind of awkward when you're the only coloured person in the annual Russian Club meeting.
- SurlyDuff, on 05/14/2009, -2/+17Room & Board...Board=food.
- novenator, on 05/14/2009, -11/+26Pizzzaaa...[drool]
- Grolsch, on 05/14/2009, -0/+15***** books, they need to issue this *****. Bought god damn book for 140 and opened it twice, literally. Today I am going to sell it since finals are over, hope I can get 50 out of it.
*****... - 36patroner, on 05/14/2009, -0/+14Hehe. Well computers with dvd-players?
- j035u5, on 05/14/2009, -0/+14We don't get free dental. And it's Britain not Europe.
- Suits, on 05/14/2009, -0/+1410.5 billion? Yeap. That's about what I owe in student loans.
- MichaelCorleone, on 05/14/2009, -2/+16False. 90% booze, 8% pizza, 2% everything else
- bearzly, on 05/14/2009, -2/+16You should try looking online. I found almost all of my text books on torrents, which saves a lot of $$$ seeing as I rarely look at them anyways.
- BongWaterSmells, on 05/14/2009, -0/+13Must have spent all their money on a DVD player, seen how 76% own one.
- Azap, on 05/14/2009, -2/+15I second that, I love my booze, pot, and other illegal drugs...hypothetically
- inactive, on 05/14/2009, -2/+14CURSE YOU, SCOTTISH PARLIAMENT
CURSE YOU - hotpuck6, on 05/14/2009, -0/+12and you only need to buy 8 of those at $20 each!
- nicktomyskins, on 05/14/2009, -16/+28poop
- djnermal, on 05/14/2009, -0/+12Very Inaccurate. Buried.
- mccartyba, on 05/14/2009, -0/+11I wish I received $300 a month from home...
- 36patroner, on 05/14/2009, -0/+10Well we Swedes get payed to study, at our free universities (at least the first 6 year). So...
- idc5, on 05/14/2009, -0/+10I don't know about other states, but in California, the increase in tuition every year is much higher than inflation. During my 4 years as an undergrad, quarterly tuition increased by several hundred dollars (around 2000 to 2600)
