"i got 10$ worth of this ***** in little pieces form. its hella amazing. i actually ate a piece. tastes like *****."
How enlightening. - NCoolmn67, on 10/11/2007, -10/+144The was a complete waste of time, do something with it or leave us alone.
- luke16, on 10/11/2007, -1/+107Aerogel dust, dont breathe this
- Jaydude765, on 10/11/2007, -1/+98Squeeze it! I want to see it burst..
- Berkana, on 10/11/2007, -1/+86Pound for pound, it is expensive, but that stuff is never sold by the pound. A pound of it would be a huge volume.
- Intrexed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+50i wonder how many of those i could fit in my mouth
- Roksix, on 10/11/2007, -5/+43Give it a month before this is sold at ritzy heath spas as a face treatment. "It's like covering your skin with air!"
- chdorr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+32http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aerogel
- XZanatos, on 10/11/2007, -2/+32I dugg the video because this guy paid over ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS to show it to us. That kind of determination deserves a digg.
- goodkidyo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+28beauty is the essence of aerogel.... and aerogel is the essence of air.
- vcleniuk, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Some one carve a Princess Leia out of this stuff...
"Help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope..." - cjpro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Catching dust from the tail of a comet.
- EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20It's not lighter than air, if it was, it would float, like a helium balloon. It is slightly heavier than air.
- DevinOlsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/ea/Aerogelbrick.jpg "A 2.5 kg brick is supported by a piece of aerogel weighing only 2.38 grams."
It wouldn't burst. - EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Before you choke on 99% air and die? :D
- mpkauto, on 10/11/2007, -5/+21ya so whats the point of this stuff again?
- noonzie, on 10/11/2007, -0/+15i bet on ebay the shipping cost would still be outrageous even though it doesn't weigh anything.
- hugepedlar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17That's what she said.
- Grantismo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Apparently this ***** is the worlds greatest insulator. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Aerogel_matches.jpg
Maybe that guy should make a suit out of it before we try to burn him to death for making a craptastic video. - Johnnell, on 10/11/2007, -1/+15Didn't kevin rose choke on some of this on TechTV?
- SpaceDreamer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11what happens if you heat it for a while and then release it?
will it float like a hot air balloon? - Schatzjm, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10Actually antimatter is the most expensive item.
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimatter#Value - Ostizzle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9For $159 it better get me pretty ***** up when I snort it.
- stealthboy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+10If you're comparing price per pound, why do you have to say it's more expensive than a "couple bars of gold"? Wouldn't it just be more expensive than gold, period?
/units nazi - Schmidtopolis, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9"I love when you squeeze them.. and it feels, like... a bag of sand."
What? - RichMig, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Brought to you by the "Spoon-Fork balancing act" guy.
Rated C for Could've been shorter. - kcpwnsgman, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9ok, youtube is blocked at my university temporarily, so I don't know if this is answered but, why is it expensive?
- ToadLeg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7First: You weigh something lighter than air in a vacuum.
Second: If the aerogel was lighter than air, you would see it float in the video. - EXreaction, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yep, catching particles of dust in space.
http://stardust.jpl.nasa.gov/tech/aerogel.html - ruley, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5"shatters into tiny bits of sand when any pressure is applied"
that would be quite a turnoff - Navicerts, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5WTB essence of air
- RainDrizzleFog, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Check the Wiki article 5 posts above yours.
- qwertydvorak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5why would you pay for something that is almost completely water ?
http://www.aquafina.com/ - dn11, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5man come on, you could have done something cool with it like burn it with a lighter
- Durb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4pound for pound wouldn't it cost more than any amount of gold?
- Jolene, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4'for its weight'
Yes. For its weight. Which is almost nothing. It will shatter. I believe Sarah Lane squeezed a piece of this on The Screensavers many moons ago. Didn't she? It shattered into bajillion pieces.
I've got a piece of this stuff. Its really cool. One interesting thing, is that after handling it, your finger tips are really dry. Its so porous that it absorbs all the oils off your skin. (causing it to actually deteriorate.) - Berkana, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6It would shatter; it's actually rather brittle.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Holy ***** they blocked youtube? You poor soul...
- RussellDovey, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5You're thinking of aerotoffee.
- cptn_cardboard, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Kevin choked on a lot of things on TechTV...
- ToadLeg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4By that logic water is not heavier than air, it's just "more dense." The balloon is lighter than air because it is less dense. If you weighed the same volume of air as balloon, the air would weigh more. Yeah, air actually weighs a lot.
- spudnic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4'Pound for pound, this costs more than a couple bars of gold.' pound for pound it would also cost more than 1 gram of gold. Or 1 ton.
I also don't think it's the most expensive (by cost/weight) item on earth, as far as I'm aware that crown goes to tritium, which costs $84000 to $130000 per gram. That lump of aerogel would have to weigh 0.001grams to beat that - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"Aerogel can be used as drug delivery system due to its biocompatibility. Due to its high surface area and porous structure, drugs can be adsorbed from supercritical CO2. The release rate of the drugs can be tailored based on the properties of aerogel" -Wiki
"Does that mean it can be made into a bong?" -My stoner roommate - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I think you've got the black lung, pop.
- sevenoutdb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I wonder what would happen if they made that stuff with helium/hydrogen gas and then laminated it, I could have a flying surfboard!!!!
- giorgioarmani, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@ kcpwnsgman
aerogel is expensive b/c its a low density solid material whose gel component has been replaced by gas. The material has been refined by NASA scientists and the material is considered the lightest solid in the world. Despite its smoky, translucent, lightweight appearance, this material is extremely tough. NASA scientists uses the material to capture tiny space borne particles for observation and analysis. Making this material is not easy, drying up the hydrogel in extreme environments. - f201, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You're dead to me, fabiosir. You're deader to me than your dead mother.
- tyywebb, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Youtube users are the best.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Basically if the object weighs less than the volume of the fluid it displaces then it will float.
- DevinOlsen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Errr.. I'm an idiot. "Pressing softly on an aerogel typically does not leave a mark; pressing more firmly will leave a permanent dimple. Pressing firmly enough will cause a catastrophic breakdown in the sparse structure, causing it to shatter like glass—a property known as friability."
