- ComeOutSwingin, on 02/02/2008, -10/+290The internet is a series of tubes.
- wreckosaurus, on 02/02/2008, -7/+263They cut it? All the internetz are going to leak into the ocean
- PueSi, on 02/02/2008, -1/+184It's seems so normal to use the internet now but when you think about all the things involved it's amazing that we pulled that off.
- sf49rox, on 02/02/2008, -10/+170Complete with jpg artifacts and tiny, blurry text. Thanks.
- MrBabyMan, on 02/02/2008, -5/+116Sure! "How one clumsy ship cut off the web for 75 million people" # The Guardian, Friday February 1 2008 http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2008/feb/01/int ...
- Joomal, on 02/02/2008, -2/+103Hmm.. no wonder spam went down over 90% this week.
- seldon452, on 02/02/2008, -10/+105Anchor my ass! THE FISH ARE ATTACKING THE WIRES TO KILL THE INTERNET!
- vroom101, on 02/02/2008, -9/+94Did an article accompany that very interesting map?
- oyourmom, on 02/02/2008, -0/+63My dad works in network architecture and he sent me a picture of them repairing the fiber optic cables when a tube broke connecting China to India. It cost $10,000 just to get a boat out there to pull it up and re-connect 1 break. The tube looked like it had a couple hundred thousand strands in it each one doing 10gb/s. If I can find the picture ill post it up.
- hdar3415, on 02/02/2008, -6/+53 In some respects technology amazes me, and in others I feel so backward.
- defaultdigger, on 02/02/2008, -4/+50hi res link anyone? my eyes hurt
- Error601, on 02/02/2008, -1/+46The History Channel (I think it was them) show on running the first Trans-Atlantic cable is pretty good. Doing something of that scale most people think can't be done takes some copper balls.
- Rosamilia, on 02/02/2008, -0/+41indeed, it's hard to grasp all the work major companies/governments have done behind the scenes just to get technology to where it is
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -1/+42Dear Friend,
I am contacting you for urgent assistance. My husband deposited the sum of Fifty Milllion five hundred thousand dollars ($50.500.000.00 ) in one security company here in Togo before his died and he advised me to move this fund to a foreign country for an investment for the benefit of the family... - goosnargh, on 02/02/2008, -0/+37or png
- xIXReMiXIx, on 02/02/2008, -12/+48Wait Africa has internet access?
- mco5t9, on 02/02/2008, -0/+34Oh noez! All the lolcats are going to drown!
- Celeron, on 02/02/2008, -1/+31New 007 movie: James Bond tries to save the world from Blofeld and his hencemen from cutting all the undersea internet cables, thus forcing the world pay 1 trillion dollars to use SPECTRE's satellite internet service.
- colto, on 02/02/2008, -3/+30If by noticeably faster you mean a few milliseconds....then yes.
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+252.1 tbps seems pretty low, when you think of how many people on a continent are on the internet at a given time.
- sgtcaboose, on 02/02/2008, -2/+26Wow, I thought AU was still running on half of an old rusty line from the USSR. There you go, learn something new everyday :)
I never knew that the internet as a whole tranfered 7TB/s, I always assumed it would be higher. - NavyPunk426, on 02/02/2008, -0/+24I'd really like to see that..
- tba2287, on 02/02/2008, -0/+23It's a shame that Nigeria's access wasn't cut off.
- DrywallThief, on 02/02/2008, -1/+20I'm not sure. The fishies were niblbling my internets.
- allaboutdatiki, on 02/02/2008, -2/+20What does that sign say? Do Not Anchor Here? d'oh!
- seldon452, on 02/02/2008, -1/+19uh... DIGG BURN!
- Zera, on 02/02/2008, -1/+19Each of those red lines = 2.1 tbps, and also remember that the great majority of internet traffic is contained within one's own country.
- AirPortPanic, on 02/02/2008, -3/+21seriously, know when to use gif or jpg.

- cambob76, on 02/02/2008, -0/+17Who's going to clean up all of those bits and bytes?
- kd5ftn, on 02/02/2008, -0/+17Here's a much cooler flash based map: http://www.vsnlinternational.com/map/ On the map choser, click "Global Footprint"
- chrisaug18, on 02/02/2008, -3/+20Let's hope the terrorists don't get a hold of this map...suicide submariners could take out our internetz
- wibambau, on 02/02/2008, -3/+19I think it's time to go wireless.
- thewrathoffluff, on 02/02/2008, -5/+20I know. Al Gore's my hero.
- huntersquid, on 02/02/2008, -0/+15It's pretty amazing that only 29% of the bandwidth is used on the trans-atlantic route. Can't imagine internet in the future.
- mitrovarr, on 02/02/2008, -0/+15I think it was originally 88.2% but lost the decimal point when the graphic was sized down.
- VeganG, on 02/02/2008, -0/+14Why would a shark go down to the ocean floor and bite some cable that's not even moving?
- BlackOp, on 02/02/2008, -0/+14Using satellites would be practically impossible because of the latency.
- thushan, on 02/02/2008, -1/+15Right who just cut Iran's cable?
http://www.internettrafficreport.com/asia.htm - Paddy963, on 02/02/2008, -1/+15Actually a pie chart wouldn't make any sense, because the things they are comparing (purchased capacity, and used capacity) don't add up to the 'total capacity". You would need two different charts for them to be pie charts. And how are different size circles hard to compare?
- EnigMachineGun, on 02/02/2008, -1/+14Because it's clear that pie is tastier.
- maci01, on 02/02/2008, -1/+14***** ***** *****
- mrjit, on 02/02/2008, -0/+131; It's noticeably in this context, 2; You're basically asking something like "Do I get a better internet connection if I'm closer or further from the ISP/service node." Obviously, you would and most likely there would be less hops involved, would it be noticeable? No, because the difference would be in milliseconds. Obviously if you're visting sites in the UK, you're better off being in NYC than in California as the distance equates to more routing and more packet hops.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+12I think they measure it by the amount of data transferred. not the number of users.
- Servebot, on 02/02/2008, -2/+14yeah I think I saw that.... They failed many many times, damn cables just kept breaking.
- tinkafoo, on 02/02/2008, -0/+12That's sad. We can string thousands of miles of networking cable all over the ocean floor, but we still can't get most rural areas in the United States above 56k.
- Daggity, on 02/02/2008, -1/+13I don't know sir, I'm beginning to believe it may be a big truck.
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+11Still too small you retard - like your penis
- inactive, on 02/02/2008, -0/+11The internet is responsible for 95% of Nigeria's GDP.
